Description

Jan. 17, 1933. EMPE 1,894,504
BOTTLE CAP Filed D90. 31. 1951 Patented Jan. 17, 1933 PATENT OFFICE FRIDOLIN J. WEMPE, OF ST. MARYS, KANSAS BOTTLE CAP ,Application filed December 31, 1931. Serial No. 584,193.
'5 character embodying novel means through the medium of which said cap may be conveniently removed when desired without the necessity for using extraneous means, such as a bottle opener. Other objects of the invention are to provide a bottle cap of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, eflicient and reliable in use and which may be manufactured at low cost. All of the foregoing and still further ob- 'ects and advantages of the invention will come apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate correspond ing parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a bottle cap constructed in accordance with the present invention'in position on a bottle.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure '1.
Figure 3 is a plan view showing the blank from which the cap is formed.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view on an enlarged scale showing the cap removed from the bottle.
Figure 5 is a detail view in vertical section taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Figure 4.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the bottle cap constituting the present invention is formed from a blank which is designated enerally by the reference 'numerall, said Trlank including a disk 2 with which is formed integral a substantially triangular tongue 3. The tongue 3 is provided with an arcuate edge 4 which is free of the disk 2 with the exception of the short connecting portion 5.
At the end portions of the arcuate edge 4 of the tongue 3 are the extensions 6 having projecting therefrom the ears 7 Diametrically opposite side portions of the disk 2 are provided with the openings 8 for receiving the ears 7 when the blank 1 is formed into the cap.
When forming the cap, the marginal portion of the disk 2 is bent downward substantially along the dotted line 9 in a manner to provide the crimped skirt 10 for engagement I with the bead 11 on the mouth or outlet of a bottle 12.
A tongue 3 is then bent to substantially arcuate cross section to conform substantially at its upper end to the curvature of the skirt 10 and the extensions 6 are inserted in the skirt. The ears 7 are inserted through the openings 8 and bent down, as clearly seen in Figure 5 of the drawing. The tongue 3 when finished, is provided with an out-turned marginal portion 13 which gradually diminishes toward the upper end of the tongue.
It will thus be seen that the tongue and cap are formed integrally with each other from a single piece of material but at the same time an exceedingly strong joint therebetween is provided. An intermediate portion of the upper end of the tongue 3 is formed integrally with the skirt of the cap while the side 7 portions of said upper end are secured to the skirt in a manner which will withstand an strain to which the tongue may be subjecte .A compressible seal 14 of suitable material,
preferably cork, is provided as usual in the cap.
In use, as is believed to be obvious, the tongue 3 is grasped and actuated in a manner to raise and disengage one side portion of the skirt 10 from the mouth of the bottle, the cap 3 being immediately removed in this manner. It Wlll be noted that the tongue projects diagonally from the neck of the bottle to facilitate ripping same. The top 15 of the cap may ie provided with any suitable advertising indicia. v
In Figure 3 of the drawing the dotted line 16 indicates where the marginal portion of the tongue 3 is bent to provide the out-turned portion 13 of said tongue.
It is believed that the many advantages of a bottle cap constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is 1. A bottle cap comprising a top, a skirt depending from the top having substantially diametrically opposite openings therein, a tongue having one end integral with the skirt and bendable ears on the tongue engageable in the openings.
2. A bottle cap comprising a top, a skirt depending from the top having substantially diametrically opposite openings therein, a tongue having an intermediate portion of one end formed integrally with the free edge of the skirt, and bendable ears formed integrally on said one end of the tongue engageable in the openings in the skirt.
3. A bottle cap comprising a top, a crimped skirt formed integral with the top and depending therefrom, saidskirt having substantially diametrically opposite openings therein, a tongue, of arcuate cross section, having an intermediate portion of one end integral with the skirt at a point substantially midway between the openings, extensions on the side portions of said one end of the tongue projecting into the skirt, and bendable ears on the extensions engageable in the openings in the skirt for securing said side portions of said one end of the tongue to the skirt.
4. A bottle cap comprising a to a skirt depending from the top having su stantially diametrically opposite openings therein, a tongue of arcuate cross section, having an intermediate portion of one end integral with the free edge of the skirt at a point substantially midway between the openings, and
' bendable ears on the side portions of said one end of the tongue engageable in the openings for connecting said side portions to the skirt.
5. A blank for forming a bottle cap comprising a disk havingopenings therein, a tongue having an intermediate portion of one end integral with the disk, and ears on the side portions of said one end of the tongue.
6. A blank for forming a bottle cap comprising a disk having openings therein, a tongue having an intermediate portion of one end integral with the disk, the rest of said one end of the tongue being free of the disk, and ears on the side portions of said one end of the tongue.
7. A blank for forming a bottlecap comprising a disk having openings therein, a tongue having an arcuate end, an intermediate portion of said arcuate end of the tongue being integral with the disk, the rest of the arcuate end of the tongue being free of the disk and spaced there rom, and ears neeaeoe on the side portions of the arcuate end of the tongue.
