Description

INDEX HOLDER Jan. 10, 1933.
Filed June 16. 1931 nve ttorn Patented Jan. 10, 1933 JOSEPH H. MASSE: OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA INDEX HOLDER Application filed June 16,
The present invention relates to improvements in index holders and has for its primary object the provision of a holder designed to be detachably connected with a book and adapted to carry an exteriorly visible designating index tag.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an index holder designed so as to be detachably connected with a book of the loose leaf type.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an index holder of the above character which will be securely connected with the book in assembly so as to obviate accidental disconnection thereof.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of an index holder which can be quickly and conveniently mounted in association with a book.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description progresses.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the p same:
Figure l is a perspective view of an assembled book with the improved index holder operatively associated therewith,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the book in partially assembled arrangement,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the holder detached from the book,
Figure A is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the holder with the index tag properly positioned in connection therewith, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention.
With particular reference to Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 10 designates the holder body in its entirety.
The body 10 is preferably formed from an elongated strip of metal bent transversely intermediate the ends so as to form a substan- 1931. Serial No. 544,904.
tially U-shaped bracket structure embodying a relatively long web plate 11 and substantially short laterally projecting end or connecting pates 12. At the extremities, the end plates 12 are formed to provide substantially cylindrical sleeves 14 extending from the upper to the lower edge of each end plate.
At the upper and lower longitudinal edges of the web plate 11 are provided longitudinally extending flange strips which are 59 doubled over onto the longitudinal margins of the web so as to form at the upper and lower portions a pair of co-operating guide channels 15.
At the corners of the U-shaped bracket structure relatively narrow transversely extending flanges are struck from the outer end portions of the side plates 12 and bent over onto the transverse end margins of the web plate so as to provide transverse end channels 16.
The channels 15 and 16 are formed so as to accommodate therein the longitudinal and side edge margins of an elongated book designating or index card or tab 18 which is disosed to be slidably and removably connected with the outer face of the web plate and securely held in conjunction therewith through the instrumentality of the margin engaging channels. Q
The holder, as described in the foregoing, is particularly adapted for use in conjunction with loose leaf books of the type illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. This type of book, quite commonly employed for accounting and other purposes, embodies a back cover 20 having attached tothe inner margin a pair of upstanding pins or posts 21. A complementary front cover section 22 is provided with apertures disposed to register with the posts 21 and is connected with the posts by means of screws 23. Between the cover sections 20 and 22 is disposed a filler of loose leaf sheets 24 provided at their inner end margins with a plurality of transversely spaced circular or elongated apertures and with narrow slots extending from the apertures to the inner edge of the sheet. The apertures of the sheet are formed-to be .slidably fitted over the posts 21.
The tubular sleeves 14 of the holder are designed so as to be slidably fitted within the registering apertures in the sheet with the side plates 12 extending through the Vertical slots formed therein and the web plate arranged against the inner edge of the: filler.
The modified form of the holder, shown at Figure 6, embodies an elongated tag receiving plate 26, preferably formed of resilient metal having a longitudinal curvature.
Extending from the central portion ofthe inner face of the plate 26, preferably fronr gated sleeve formed at the inner end of the connecting plate.
3. An index holder comprising an elongated card plate, index card engaging channels formed at the edges of the said plate, a right angularly extending connecting plate projecting inwardly from the card plate and disposed to be fitted in the registering slots in the edges of the sheets comprising a loose leaf filler, and a tubular enlargement formed at the inner end of the connecting plate engageable with the registering apertures in the margins of said filler sheets.
4:. An index holder comprising an elongated card plate, channels formed at the edges of the card plate adapted to detachably engage an index card, right angularly extending connecting plates projecting inwardly from the ends of the card plate, and elongated sleeves formed at the inner ends of the connecting plates.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOSEPH H. MASSE.
book filler, that is, the ends will, due to the curvature of the plate, resiliently contact with the edges of the filler so that the holder is resiliently pressed against the filler sheets.
This modified form of the holder is particularly adaptable to engage a single aperture for accommodation of the index holder.
As readily shown in Figure 6, the end edges of the plate :26 are provided with card engaging channels 29. The longitudinal side edges are provided with a series of spaced channel clips 30 disposed to engage the longitudinal edges of an index card 31.
It is to be understood that the forms of my invention herein shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same, and that various changes as to the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. An index holder comprising an elongated card plate, a right angular connecting plate extending from the card plate adapted to be slidably inserted in the slots formed in the end edges of book filler sheets, and an enlarged elongated structure formed at the inner end of the connecting plate adapted to be slidably inserted in the registering apertures formed in the end margins of said book filler sheets.
2. An index holder comprising an elongated card plate, index card engaging channels formed at the margins of the said plate, a right angularly extending connecting plate projecting from the card plate, and an elon-
