This invention relates to a portable guard or shield for the face and part of the head and has special reference to a guard for protecting the eyes from bright light, and the head generally from heat, sparks.and foreign substances when the user is welding or performing other like duties.
More particularly, this invention has reference to a guard or shield for the face when welding, made of non-inflammable, non-heat conducting material such as sheet fibre, the guard being of a shape to cover the entire face and part of the head of the wearer.
In certain classes of welding it is desirable to provide a portable shield or guard that can be easily held in a desired position and moved into other positions at the will of the user and to suit his comfort and convenience. This is particularly true on operations where the actual welding time is short or where a helmet would be too cumbersome. The operator may hold the shield in position with one hand and may operate the welding outfit v with the other.

Referring now to the drawings, the device comprises a body portion 10 of a box-like shape having an open face and converging side, top and lower walls 11, 11a and 11?) respectively. The side walls 11 extend rearwardly to protect the cheeks and ears of the user of the device, the upper Wall 1160 extending rearwardly to protect a part of the head of the wearer and the lower wall 11?) extending rearwardly to protect the chin and neck of the wearer. The body portion is preferably made of a single sheet of a noninflammable and non-heat conductive material such as sheet fibre. In order to form the body portion in the shape as described, the four corners of a fiat sheet of material are cut away and the edges of the material surrounding the cutaway portions are joined together by means of rivets or other suitable securing means 12.
In order that the portable shield or guard can be held easily in a desired position and moved readily into other positions at the will of the user, a handle is provided comprising a portion 14 permanently secured to the body portion 10 as by means of screws and bolts 15. An adjustable portion 16 is pivotally secured to the stationary member 1a and is frictionally held in a desired adj usted position by means of a securing member such as a thumb-screw 16. The member 16 may be locked, therefore, in various positions of pivotal adjustment to suit'the comfort and convenience of the operator employing the shield.
The front side of the body portion 10 is provided with a preferably rectangular opening 17 in such a position as may be in alignment with the eyes of the average per son. A sheet metal retainer frame 18 is arranged in the rectangular opening and is of a size to fit snugly therein. The frame 18 is to Fig. 5 taken on provided with an inner outwardly xtending flange 19 which is secured to the body portion preferably by means of rivets 20. The outer portion of the frame 18 is provided with an inwardly extending flange 21, a colored glass or commonly called a welding lens 22 resting against the inner side thereof. The welding lens, being of a comparatively expensive material, is protected from injury by a cover glass 23 which latter rests against the outside side of the flange-21 and is held in position thereagainst by resilient means suitably mounted in an auxiliary frame member 24 fixedly secured to the frame 18.
The welding lens 22 is formed of a colored or clouded glass which prevents certain of the rays of light from penetrating therethrough.
Sparks and foreign substances are oftentimes violently given off from the welding arc and break the cover glass. it is, therefore, very desirable to provide a lens holder construction that is readily accessible for the replacement of the cover glass.
Referring now more parti ularly to Figs. 3 to 8, inclusive, two forms of lens hold-er are shown as embodied in this invention, the form illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 8 being the first to be described. In order that the cover glass 23 be readily removed from the auxiliary frame 24, one end of the frame 2% is open. A leaf spring 25 is securedto the face side of the frame 2d and bears inwardly against the glass 23, the glass 23 being preferably of a size such that might quite readily be inserted through the open end and into the pocket formed by the auxiliary frame 2i. In order to lock the glass 23 in position in the pocket,a second flat spring 26 of a substantially semi-elliptical shape is provided atthe open end of the frame and in position extends into alignment with the opening. \Vhen it s desired to insert or remove the glass 23, the leaf spring 26 is raised out of alignment *ith the opening.
Referring now to Figs. 3, 6 and 7, a modified form of retainer for the glass23 is shown. This retainer comprises a frame 27 having a pair of leaf spring members 28 of a substantially semi-elliptical shape secured at one end thereof to the underneath side of the frame. One end of the frame 27 is upturned as at 29 to engage against the material surrounding the open end of the pocket formed by the auxiliary frame. In removing or inserting the cover glass 23, the retaining member or frame 27 is removed, whereafter the glass 23 is readily displaced. After the glass 23 is inserted in position in the pocket, the frame 27 is likewise inserted in the pocket to a position such that the bent-over end 29 engages the material forming the pocket. The springs 28 urge the cover glass against the flange 21 of the frame 18.
A cover glass 30 is likewise provided 111 teriorly of the guard in both embodiments and is urged against the welding lens 22 by means of a retainer frame 31 similar in most respects to the frame 27. The frame 31 has both its outer ends 21 bent over to engage recesses formed in a clip 33. The frame 31 fits loosely in position between the side walls of the lens support 18; that is, there is a substantial play between the ends thereof. A pair of leaf spring members 34; are mounted on the frame 31 and urge the cover glass 30 against the welding lens 22. Vhen it is desired to remove the retainer frame 31, the frame is depressed against the spring 34 whereafter it is moved to either side, one end being moved outwardly past one of the clips 33, whereafter the entire frame is removable. The clips 33 extend the Width of the frame 31 and are suitably secured to the body portion as by means of the rivets which secure the flange 19 of the frame 18 thereto.
While but two embodiments of this invention are herein shown and described, it is to be understood that many modifications thereof will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention and, therefore, the same is to be limited only by the scope of the prior art and the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A lens holder for welders guards and the like, including a frame, a welding lens removably secured in said frame, said frame having a pocket. with an open end, acover glass for said pocket removable exteriorly therefrom through said open end, a second frame slidable in said pocket through said open end, and spring means on said latter frame for engaging and for urging said glass in a snugrelation With said first frame.
2. A lens-holder for welders guards and the like, including a main frame having a flange onits outer face, a Welding lens in position to rest against the inner side of. said flange, an auxiliary frame fixed to said main frame providing a pocket therebetween, said auxiliary frame having an open end, a cover. glass exteriorly removable through said open end, and resilient means in said pocket for urging said glass against the outer side of said flange.
3. A lens holder for Welders guards and the like, including a main. frame having a flange on its outer face, a-welding lens in position to rest against the inner side of said flange, an auxiliary frame fixed to said main frame providing a pocket therebetween, said auxiliary frame having an open end, a cover glass exteriorly removable through said open end, a member removably mounted in said,

5. A lens holder for Welders guards and the like, including a main frame having a flange on its outer face, a Welding lens in posit-0n to rest against the inner side of said flange, an auxiliary frame fixed to said main frame providing a pocket therebetvveen, said auxiliary frame having an open end, a cover glass exteriorly removable through said open end, resilient means in said pocket for urging said glass against the outer side of said frame, and means for obstructing said open end for preventing displacement of said glass.
6. A lens holder for Welders guards and the like, including aframe, a Welding lens removably secured in said frame, said frame having a pocket With an open end, a cover glass for said pocket removable exteriorly therefrom through said open end, a second frame slidable in said pocket through said open end, said last mentioned frame having an end portion for abutting said first mentioned frame adjacent said open end to position said frame in said pocket, and means in said pocket for urging said glass in a snug relation With said first frame.
