Description

Patented Nov. 17, 1925.

UNITED STATES MARTIN C. WHELAN, F KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.

EYE PROTECTOR.

Application filed August 7, 1924.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, MARTIN C. lVHELAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Wvyandotte and 6 State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Eye Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

Y My invention relates to improvements in eye protectors. It is particularly adapted for use for the protection of the eyes of a person at work adjacent to a grinding wheel,

and also for protection of the eyes of a person operating an electric or acetylene welding apparatus, or from the glare of any strong light.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a novel eye protector of the kind described, which is simple, cheapto make, durable, light, not liable to get out of order,

which can be readily and quickly applied to and removed from its position of use, and which is efficient in operation.

The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the preferred embodiment ofmy invention, i

Fig. 1 is a perspective View of proved eye protector.

Fig. 2 is a top view of the saine.

Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the saine shown applied `in operative position on a person.

Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.

1 designates the downwardly extending arms and 2 the transverse portion of an inverted U shaped portion of a resilient wire frame, the arms of which at the lower end of the frame extend first rearwardly at 3, the portions 3 having formed therein respectively rings `4, to amplify the spring effect, said portions 3 being adapted toV rest my imon the shoulders of a person, and terminat` ing at their rear endsin return bends 5, the arms then having forwardly extending portions 6, which at their forward portions extend forwardly and downwardly at 7 such portions being adapted to rest on the persons chest to assist in supporting the frame in operative position, shown in Fig. 3.

The lower ends of the arms of the U shaped portion of the frame are connected by a transverse brace wire 8 having two eyes 9.

The arms extend upwardly from the por- Serial No. 730,663.

tions 7 through the eyes 9 respectively, and their end portions 10 then extend rearwardly and curve toward and cross each other. The portions 10 are adapted to be spread apart and passed around and made to em brace the neck of the person.

A vertical transverse plate 11 extends across the front side of the U shaped portion of the frame and has ears 12 bent over the portion 2 of the frame. The ends of the plate 11 are provided respectively with two ears 13 which respectively extend around to the rear of the arms 1. At the rear of the plate is a transparent shield la, over the rear side of which extend the ears 12 and 13. The plate 11 may have at its lower edge an upwardly extending flange 15, which overlaps the shield lil. The plate 11 has a transverse hole 16 therethrough, over which the shield 14 extends.

Side guards 17 overlap the front side of the plate 11, and extend rearwardly therefrom, and are secured thereto by means of bolts 18, which extend respectively through the ears 12 and 13, and through the shield 14, plate 11, and side guards 17. The bolts 18 are respectively provided with nuts 19.

The shield 14 may be of any suitable transparent material, such as mica, glass, or celluloid. When the protector is to be used, to protect the eyes from glare of strong light. the shield may be of blue, amber or other color suitable for the purpose.

To mount the protector in operative position, the portions 10 are spread apart and slipped rearwardly, so as to embrace the neck of the wearer, with the portions 3, 5 and 6 resting on the shoulders, and the downwardly extending portions 7 resting on the chest. The hole 16 will now be disposed forward of the persons eyes, and the shield 14. will extend transversely in fl'ront of the eyes, and will protect them from strong glare and from flying particles. The guards 17 will protect the eyes from particles projected past the ends of the shield 14e. To remove the protector, it is but necessary to draw it forwardly.

My improved eye protector is sanitary, affords good ventilation, and enables unsanitary and uncomfortable goggles to be dispensed with.

I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as many modificafrom "said brace and `are' adapted' 'to rest ie-" spectively on the 'shoulders 'of a person, 'said extensions passing forwardly to and engagingl"-an'd'being heldby said brace, and hav-f y `respectively'rest onv thesi'iouldei'sof a per# ing their end portions extending vi"earwardly from said brace and adapted to releasably` embracethe neck of the person'.V

2. In" anfleye protector of 'the kind de? scribed`,"`a resilient wire having an inverted U-shaped "portion, a. "transparent shield,

means for snpporting'said shield' on's'a-id U? shaped portion',`the ai'nis'of said' U-shaped portion" extending rearwardly below said shield and' adapted to rest on the shoulders of V4a l:person when the shield Vis disposed transversely in front of the eyes" ofthe per son,`"the vendV portionsof said 'arinsbeing adapted to embrace the neck of" theperson when theai'ins'are resting on the shoulders 3. In an eye protector of the' kind de` scribed, a y wire' frame' having rearwardly'ezitending arms adapted to rest on the shouldersY and having resili'ent'portions adaptedV to einbrace the'neck of a person, a plate :carried byl Said frame having'a hole therethrough, and a transparent shield `securedto said plate and extending across said hole Vinfrontof the'eyes when the said arms are engaged with the neck and resting on tlie"'slioii'ldei"s.

4l. In an eye' protector of the Vkind de#A scribed, a wire 'frame having an inverted U shapedV portion, a brace connecting the` arins of said frame yandhaving two eyes, said arms extending first vrearwardly from said brace and being adapted to rest on the shoulders of a person, said arins then extending forwardly to and upwardly respectively through said eyes and then rearwardly, the rearwardly extending end portions of said arms curving toward each other and adapted to embrace the neck of the person, a transparent shield on said frame above said brace, and means supported by the fra-nie for supporting' the shield before the eyes of the person.

In an eyeprotector ofpthe kind de vscribed, wire frame having an inverted U shaped portion", the 'arnis' ofwhich first extend downwardly then rearwardly soas to son, thence forwardly to substantially the vertical plane of theA downwardly extending portions, theend portions'of saidarnis being resilient and curving inwardly and extend`v ling rearwardly and adapted tofenibrace the neck of a person, a transparentshield, and

means for' supporting said shield 'between the downwardly extending portions of'said arms.

in eye protector of the kind described" having a resilient wire frame having an in on the shoulders'of a person, said' arnis extending forwardly and downwardly from"V the shoulders and being adapted to rest onthe chest of the person, and .extending upwardly from the chest and having their end portions extending rearwardly and adapted to embrace the neck of the person, a plate fastened to and Supported by said U shaped portion and having a transverse hole therethrough, and a transparent shield fastened to and supported by said plate and extending" across said hole.

In testimony whereof `I have signed my naine to this specification.

MARTIN C. TWIIELAN.
