Application January 10, 1941, Serial No. 373,885
1 Claim.
This invention relates generally to the art of shaving. More particularly it relates to a shaving device having a magnifying arrangement associated with means for performing the shaving operation, whereby a person shaving himself will be able to obtain a full enlarged view of the portions of his face that are being subjected to the shaving operation, and more particularly a clearly enlarged view of these portions.
The general object of my invention is the provision in a shaving device of a simple and effective construction combining a magnifying arrangement with shaving means so that both may be used conjointly by a person shaving himself.
Among the more particular objects of my invention is the provision of a construction in a shaving device whereby a magnifying lens is so positioned relatively near the shaving portions of the device, as to give the user of the device a full enlarged View of portions of the face to which he is applying the device in a mirror before which he is shaving.
These objects and such other objects as will hereinafter appear or be pointed out are attained in the illustrative embodiment of my invention shown in the drawing, wherein:
Figure l is an elevational view partly in section; and
Figure 2 is a section taken on the lines 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
It will be observed that I have shown my inven tion in the drawing as embodied in a razor generally known as the Gillette type and as comprising a blade holding head and a handle member. It will be here stated that this manner of illustration is merely for purposes of exemplification since it will be obvious as I explain my invention, that it is equally applicable to all types of safety razors now on the market.
Upon viewing the drawing it will be observed that the shaving head is comprised of a support or saddle 83 provided with guard teeth ii-J. extending outwardly from the opposite edges. This type of saddle is intended to seat a double edged razor blade of the type shown at 85. The blade is clamped in position on and to the curvature of the seat 83 by cap member 8!: which is provided with a projection 87 which is received through registering openings in the seat 83 and blade to complete the assembly of the shaving head.
The handle is shown as comprised of portions 89, si, 82 and 83. The portion 8'2 is transparent and of a width ciosely approaching the width of the shaving head. It is shown as so conformed as to serve as a magnifying lens. In the illustrated embodiment, the lens 82 is shown as mounted in a frame M of any desired or preferred material. This frame has its lower end secured to or formed integrally with the handle portion Bil. The conformation of its upper end may be as desired. One such conformation is shown in Figure 2. A threaded opening is formed in the upper end of the frame at and is continued down into the upper portion of lens 82 for the reception of the threads formed on the member 81 projecting downwardly from the shaving head assembly which is maintained thereby in a blade clamping relation.
An arrangement such as shown in the drawing is intended to function in the following manner. It is the general practice to shave in front of a mirror and to follow the shaving performance by viewing it as reflected in the mirror. By my arrangement the image in the mirror will be a magnification of the active shaving edge of the razor and of the area of the skin adjacent that edge and the user will see this magnified image and therefore to be able to judge better of the shaving performance than he is generally able to do at present.
My invention lends itself particularly to the use of synthetic plastics for the magnification. Such material presents the advantage of not being readily broken when dropped.
While I have herein described one embodiment of my invention and the manner of its use, it will be understood that my invention may be embodied in many other forms, as will be obvious to those skilled in the art. It is further to be understood that the disclosure herein is by way of illustration merely and is not to be interpreted in a limiting sense, and that I did not limit myself other than as called for by the prior art.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination: a blade holder provided with a guard for the edge of a blade and having means for clamping a shaving blade to present its shaving edge adjacent the guard and a handle whereby the blade holder can be manipulated for a shaving performance, said handle being comprised for a portion of its length of an optical magnifying lens of a width approaching that of the guard and positioned and contoured optically so that when a user manipulates the holder over his face while before a mirror, the magnifying device will be in his line of vision to the mirror and he will see therein a clear, full, enlarged image of the blade shaving edge and of the portions of his face immediately adjacent the shaving edge.
