UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANNAH G. CRAWFORD, OF PEABODY, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSIONS FOR SEWING-MACHINE TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,340, dated April 10, 1877; application filed January 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANNAH G. CRAWFORD, of Peabody, in the county of Marion and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Combination Lap-Board and Extension for Sewing-Machine Tables, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a bottom view of my improved combined lap-board and extension, shownattached to a sewing-machine. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are Vertical, longitudinal, and transverse sections of the same, respectively on lines a: say 3 and z c, Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is an end view of the combined lap-board and extension detached from the table and folded up.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists of a central tableexteusion and lap-board for the table of the sewing-machine, having hinged and folding side leaves fitted to and locked by fixed fastening-pins, entering a recess and socket-hole at opposite sides of the table.
In the drawing, A represents the table of a sewing-machine; B, the extension of the same. 0 and D are hinged leaves of different length and width, that are applied to oppo site sides of the extension B. The edge of the extension B and the edges of the leaves 0 D adjoining the table A are fitted to the edge molding of the table, so as to bind when attached by the fastening-pins E of leaves 0 and D closely and firmly on the table. The fastening-pins E are secured to the under side of leaves 0 and D, the pin of board D being first introduced into a recess, a, at one side of the table, and the pin of leaf 0 then into a recess and socket-hole, b, at the opposite side of the.
on the extension into narrow space, as shown in Fig. 5, for being conveniently stored away or used, in the customary manner, as a common lap-board.
The sewing-machine table is, by this attachmen t, enlarged, so as to be used with greater convenience for the different articles to be sewed, while, by turning the hinged leaves down at each side of the person holding the board upon the lap, it can be used for the same purposes as any other lap-board, forming for tailors, dress-makers, and general family use a convenient and inexpensive board, which may be readily applied to the sewing-machine table or used as a lap-board, as required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the table of a sewing-machine, having a bottom recess at one side, and a recess and socket-hole at the opposite side, of the hinged leaves of an extensionboard, said leaves having fastening-pins entering said recess and hole to rigidly attach the leaves and extension, substantially as specifled.
MISS HANNAH G. CRAWFORD.
