This invention is a composition shingle which may be constructed from any suitable material commonly used in the manulscture of shingles or this character and the invention is more especially an individual shingle in contradistinction to the vvell known strip shingles.
The accompanying drawing illustratesone practical embodiment of the invention, but the construction shown therein is to be understood as illustrative, only, and not as defining the limits ot the invention.
Figure l is a perspective view of a shingle ernboolyin531 the present invention; and,
Figure 23 shovvs sin7 oil such shingles laid in three courses., f
The shingle of the present invention may be made of any suitable prepared reeling material, such tor example as material hav-v ing a felt base impregnated with pitch or asphalturn and having a ground slate finish. tThis material is tenacious, durable and economicalvanol is vvell adapted for use in the making oi." composition shingles.
The shingles are blanlred out from such material preferably in the form shown in Figure l wherein the shingle proper is shovvn as substantially rectangular in shape and is provided nt one oit its corners with tvvo oppositely laterally projecting Wings l. These Wings may be oi any suitable size and shape, but their upper edges are preferably cut so as to slope toward the shingle proper as shovvn at 2,
The shingles are blanlred out. fdat and are leid in successive courses alter the inenner shown in Figure 2. The lovverniost course shovvn is designated A and after course has been laid and nailed down by nails 3 the tvvo opposite corners oi each shingle, the course ld is laid vvith the Wings of the shingles of'such course introduced lf heeding tne shingles of the course E upvverd-1 ly under the edges of each tvvo adjacent shingies of the Ai'irst course end therenpon each shingle ol the second course E is nailed dorm by nails 4l alter vvhich the third course C is laid and nailed dov/'n in lilre manner and subsequent courses iollovv in the seine way.
lt will be noted irons Figure 2 when 39223. Serial No. 5,63@
the shingles are laid in the manner described, successive courses do not have an appreciable overlap with respect to preceding courses and it has been found in practice that this fact maires it possible to cover a relatively large root with an astonishingly small number of shingles constructed and laid in the manner described. This greatly econornizes not only in the cost of material, but also in the cost or labor incident to vthe laying of such roeie without in tending1 to produce a leaky nssemblege Moreoverr when shingles are in niece upon roof, the i conceals reni viertr and the optical ei?- fect is highly p w lilurtherinore inseq much as Wings p shingles pre cedingq courses tne point Where the Shingles .of such courses are neiled, there no tendency of the Weather edges of the shim gies to litt or curl and the Wings cannot Worl'; loose, this being especially true when the upper edges of the v are sloped as shown 2, which causes to interlock against removel.
lt will be further noted 'from Figure 2 that the shingles laici with one corner to the vvesther; that to they are laid with their diagonal dimensions extending; vertically and horizontally of roei", in controdistinction to rectangular shingles which are laid `with 'their edges dieL osed horizontally and vertically of the roof. Thus, when the shingles are assembled on e roof, they present, shown in .Figure 2, e substantially n diamond shaped. appearance, vvitli only one corner of each shingle to the weather and the other three corners of each shingle covered by shingles oi superimposed coursesi The accompanying drawing; shows the E iIF- red practical torna, yet Si change rnanire ncresima. s commensurate wits. yine appended n ciernes., u

A flexible shingle of composition roofing material comprising a body having an overall rectangular contour, dat throughout its entire extent and adapted to be laid with one corner to the weather and provided at the apex of said weather corner with wings extending laterally in opposite directions be= yond the contiguous lateral converging edges of said-overall rectangular contour ot the body and lying in the saine plane .as the remainder of the shingle, vvith the upper edges of saidwings sloping in a downward direction toward the body et the shingle, said Wings being of sucient transverse length to extend in dat position beneath portions ot the bodies of two juxtaposed underlying shingles of the preceding shingle eoursetn hold down 3@ the weather corner ot the' shingle.
