PLOW
Filed Sept. 14, 1932 -wchlnventor Patented Jan. 3, 1933 Y CLARENCE P. BURGH, F LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY PLOW Application filed September 14, 1932. Serial No. 633,174.
This invention relates to plows and an object is to provide a means whereby when the point of the plow strikes an unyi-elding obstruction it will be moved automatically so as to ride over the obstruction without causing injury to the implement or the user.
Another object is to utilize a combined plow point and delector which normally is in position to penetrate the soil like the ordinary plow point but will shift automatically to position to deflect the plow upwardly over an obstruction when engaged by the point.
A still furth-er object is to fasten the point in deflecting position until the obstruction has been passed whereupon the parts will become automatically released to return to their normal positions.
nWith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention` In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the plow with its parts in their normal positions.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the positions of the parts while riding over an obstruction.
Figure 3 is a sleeve.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates the plowshare fastened in the usual manner to the lower end of an upwardly and forwardly extended standard 2. A deflecting blade 3 is located on the landside of the plow and is pivotally connected thereto close to its lower edge and back from its pointed front end Il as indicated at 5. The point 4 normally projects forwardly beyond the plowshare slightly below the level of the landside while the lower edge of the rear portion of the blade 3 is substanperspective View of the guide tially flush with the lower edge of the landside.
The upper forwardly extended portion of standard 2 is preferably straight as shown ,Y
at 6 and is extended between the sides of a guide sleeve 7 having an open top as shown in Figure 3v. The standard is pivotally connected to thesleeve at 8 and is bridged by a. yoke 9 integral with the is positioned a compression spring lO one end ofA which bears on the portion G of the standard while the other or upper end is engaged by an adjusting screw 1l.
A filling block l2 is secured between the sides of the upper portion of sleeve 7 and the spring 10 holds the portion G of the standard normally in alinement therewith as in Figure l.
A locking lug 13 extends downwardly from the standard at a point beneath spring 10 and another locking lug le extends rearwardly from the sleeve 7. At a point close to the sleeve 7 there is a latch lever l5 pivotally mounted at 16 on the standard and having a notch 17. A spring 18 connecting the lever to the standard serves to hold the notched portion of said lever l normally pressed toward the sleeve but below and out of engagement with lug 13, as shown in Figure l. Y l
A draft beam 19 is slidable in sleeve 7 and normally extends under the portion 6 of standard 2. A notch 20 is provided in this beam and the spring acts normally to press the lug 13 into said notch so as to hold the beam against sliding movement in the sleeve. The rear end of the beam engages lever and holds it back as shown.
A pull bar 21 is pivotally connected at 22 to a bracket 23 on beam 19 and the back end of the bar is pivotally connected to the upper portion of blade 3, as shown at 211. A spring 25 connects bar 21 to standard 2 and exerts a constant pull upon the bar.
The front end of beam 19 is provided with a clevis 26 or other connecting means and by means thereof the plow structure can be coupled to a draft tree, a tractor, or the running gear of a. sulky or riding plow.
sleeve. In this yoke Normally the parts are positioned as in Figure 1. As the plow is moved forwardly it Will turn the soil in the usual way and the point 4 of blade 3 will assist materially in that operation. Should the point 4 come into contact with an unyielding obstruction O, such as a large root, a rock or the like, said point, being below the level of pivot 5 will act as a fuis-rum about which the plowshare 1 Vand standard 2 will swing abruptly to cause the front end vportion 5 of standard 2 to'swing upwardly relative to sleeve 7 and against spring 10. This will withdraw lug 13 from notch 2O and, consequently, the beam 19 can slide forwardly in the sleeve 7 against the action of spring 25. y f Y As the result of the foregoing action lever 15 will be released and can move into engage- Vment with lug 14, thereby'fastening the parts 7 and 6 in their new relative positions as in Figure 2. At the same time beam 19 will pull through bar 21 on the upper portion of blade 3 `and swing itto the position shown in Figure 2 so that its upper edge will be brought` to an upwardly and forwardly inclined'position and act as a runner for riding over the obstruction O. 'f
As soon as the obstruction O is passed 3'6 the spring 25 will return the blade 3 to its normal position and slide standard 2 and sleeve 7 forwardly relative to beam 19. Thus lever 15 will be brought into Contact with the'end of the beam 19 and be disengaged lfrom lug 14. Thereafter spring 10 will return the portion 6 of the standard to its position in alinement with block 12 and the lug 13 will enter notch 20. Consequently the parts will be automatically reset and the plowing operation can be proceeded with.
What is claimed is:

The combination with avplowshare, a standard, and a draft beam slidably and pivotally joined to the standard, of a defiecting blade pivotally connected to the plowshare and having a forwardly extending point., fastening means for the beam releasable by eX- cessive resistance from an obstruction to the forward` movement of the plowshare to permit sliding movement of the beam, and means plowshare to lift the plowshare and present a deflecting edge for riding over the obstruction, and means for automatically locking the standard and beam against relative swinging movement while passing an obstruction.
