ATTACHMENT MECHANISM.

This invention relates to attachment mechanism between plows and drills. 7
One of the objects of the invention is in the provisionof attachment means between plows and drills which insures the travel of the drill behind the plow in'the proper drilling position at all times, and further permits the making of a sharp turn when the length of the fieldhas been traversed.
Another object is in the provision of specialattachment means between a plow and a small drill, adapted to be, drawn behind the plow in a manner to insure the proper drilling and seeding operation, said attachment mechanism being of a semi rigid construction and permitting a sh re turn to be made by the drill. A-further object is in the provision of attachment. means between a plow and drill, said attachment mechanism including a semi-rigid positioning of the drill tongue with the plow member and connections with the drill to permit sharp turning thereof.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following specification, taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in
which Fig. 1 is a plan view of a plow and following drill member, with the attachment mechanism connecting same;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, there has been shown a special attachment means between aplow and drill, said connecting means insuring proper travel of the drill, as well as permitting sharp turning thereof when necessary.
The necessity for the attachment mechanism which forms the basis for the present application, has apparently arisen only in the past few years, during which time there has come into use, especially in the Northwestern portion of the United States, a manner of plowing and drilling, utilizing a conventional plow member followed by a small drill. Plowing and drilling are ordinarily separate operations, but for the purposes of economy, saving of time, and the employment of less man power, it has been found profitable to combine the use of a'plow member with a small drill, properly spaced therebehind in such manner that the drilling operation succeeds immediately the plowing operation.
Connecting means of ordinary design beof the parts tween the plow and drill will not permit the most efiicient functioning and travel of the drill member, and for this reason, applicant has devised the following mechanism. '7

In view of the fact that the drill must fol low in a certain position behind. the plow,
there must necessarily be a rigid, or substantially rigid, maintenance of the position of the tongue 12, with respect to the plow. This rigid connection is accomplished in the following manner. 1
A clamp 18 is bolted, as at 19 and 20, to the plow beam. This clamp has an outwardly extending bracket 21 having an aperture therein, through which is projected a downwardly extending lug 22, suitably bolted by theseries of bolts 23, to the forward end of thetongue 12. This connection is obviously rather loose. clamp 24 is fastened by means of the bolt 25, to a brace rod 26 on the plow. The clamp 24 has, an extended bracketv 27, through which is projected the end of a rod member 28, a conventional cotter pin' 29 completing the connection in exactly the same manner as thecotter pin 30 completes the connection of the tongue with the before described clamp 18.
Surrounding the rod 28 is a sleeve 31, which abuts at one end the upstanding portion '27, and at the opposite end a bracket 82, securely clamped, asat 33, to the tongue 12. The rod member 28 projects through an aperture in the bracket 32, permitting the A second 1 above described abutment of the sleeve with said bracket. 1
Means for providing a semi-rigid connection of'the tongue with respect to the plow is accomplished by the use of the COll spring 34 surrounding the projectingend' of the rod 28, there being provided a washer 35 attached to the projecting end of the rod 28,

The operation of the attachment means herein shown between the plow and drillis thought obvious, in view of the above description, except for the fact that although the drill member, is maintained in a substantially rigid position behind the plow, to
insure proper operation,nevertheless, there s provided the spring tensioned connection of the tongue'with the plow to take care of the movement of the drill' over extremely uneven 'grou'nd surface and over. rocks and the like. f
'Due-tothe use} of this attachment means, insurance of'propertrave'l of the drill behind the plow is efiected, and the special connection of the tongue with the drill per- 'mitsf turning of the drill member in direct relation to the turning of the plow.
' What I claim is: p 1. The combination with a plow and a drill'meinber, 'of attachment means there-' betweenadapted to insure travel of the drill in alignment with the plow, as well as permitting short turning radius, including a tongue attached to the plow and having a pivotal connectiomat a point near its opposite end, 'with'the drill, framing members disposed rearwardly of the pivotal connection with the drill, said framing members controlling the movement of the tongue with respect to the drill member, stop members on the framing members to limit theturning movement of the drill with relation to the tongue, and mechanism connecting the plow with the tongue to hold the latter-in, av
