MCELROY, OF FLATBUSH, NEW YORK MEANS FOR SECURING A BLANKET TO 'A PRINTING PRESS CYLINDER Application filed December 2, 1930. Serial No. 499,602.
An object of the invention is to provide a convenient means for securing a blanket to a printing press cylinder which will prevent the blanket from creeping on the cylinder.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide means for securing a blanket to a cylinder of a printing press which will make it possible to quickly replace the blanket when desired.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a plate having arough face for disposal against a blanket-t0 press the blanket against a blanket cylinder at an opening therein, the plate having teeth at its inner edge for insertion in and which engage the blanket. There are openings in the plate through which bolts extend from the blanket cylinder at its opening, the bolts alsoextending through openings in the blanket and nuts being disposed on the bolts to press the plate and the blanket against the cylinder at its opening.
A further object of the invention is to provide an apron on the blanket cylinder with an enlarged transverse edge and also to provide a transverse edge of the blanket with an enlargement, the enlarged edges of the apron and blanket being secured together by a transverse clamping member having a transverse opening through which the bodies of the apron and the blanket extend.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of the invention is described.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views, of which Figure 1 is a fragmentary view illustrating a printing press cylinder to which a blanket is secured,

Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the means for securing an edge of the blanket to an edge of the apron,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspectiveview illustrating the clamping or securing means employed for securing an edge of the blanket to an edge of the apron, and
a Figure 6 is a fragmentary View illustrating the plate which is employed to secure one edge of the blanket to the cylinder.
7 By referring to the drawing it will be seen that a blanket cylinder 10 is provided for pressing the paper 11 against the printing plates 12 on the cylinder 13. This blanket cylinder 10 is provided with an opening 14, which extends through its periphery, the blanket cylinder 10 at its opening 14 being provided with bolts 15 which are spaced apart and which extend into the opening 14, then; bolts having threaded outer terminals.
Preferably two blankets 16 and 17 are employed and edges of these blankets l6 and 17 are provided with openings through which the bolts 15 are disposed so that one set of 7 blanket ends will be turned inwardly at the opening. 14, as best illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawing. A transverse plate 18 is provided which has openings 19 through which the bolts 15 extend, this transverse qz plate 18 having a roughened face 20, which is disposed against theouter blanket 17 for pressing thereagainst. The plate 18 is also provided with inwardly extending teeth 21 at its inner edge which penetrate the blankets so as illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawing, so that the plate 18 will obtain a firm grip on the blankets. It will be understood that the late 18 may have its teeth 21 inserted in the blanket before the edges of the blanket are disposed in the opening 14 in the blanket cylinder 10, so that the blanket and the plate 18 may be disposed together on the bolts 15. When the plate 18 and the edges of the blankets 16 and 17 are so disposed the nuts .90 22 are turned home to press the plate 18 and the two blankets 16 and 17 in the direction of the blanket cylinder 10 at its openings 14 with the inner face of the inner blanket 16 pressing'against the blanket cylinder 10 at its said opening.
The blanket cylinder 10 is provided with an apron drum 23, which is journaled in bearings at the ends of the blanket cylinder and which has a ratchet wheel 24 disposed at an outer end of the blanket cylinder. There is also a pivoted pawl 25 at an outer side of the blanket cylinder 10, the pawl engaging the ratchet wheel 24. The drum with the ratchet wheel 2% may be rotated by a crank engaging an angular terminal 26 extending from the ratchet wheel 24 and the apron drum 23. To this apron drum 23 there is secured an inner end of an apron 27, the outer end of the apron 27 being turned around a trans verse rod 28 to form a transverse enlarged end of the apron. An end 29 of the outer blanket 17 is also provided with a transverse rod 30 around which may be disposed the said end 29 of the blanket, or, as is shown in the drawing, a member 31 extending from the said end 29 of the outer blanket 17 is disposed around the transverse rod 30.
These enlarged ends formed by extending the outer end of the apron 27 around the rod 28 and the end 29 01" the blanket 17, or the member 31 extending from the end of the blanket 17 around the rod 30, are connected by means of a securing or clamping member 32, this securing or clamping member 32 serving to embrace the rods 28 and 30 with the apron 27 and the member 31 to secure the apron 27 to the member 31, which is secured to the end 29 of the outer blanket 17. The securing or clamping member 32 embraces the rods 28 and 30 and the outer end of the apron 27 and a portion of the member 31, the securing or clamping member 32 having a transverse opening 33 through which the body of the apron 27 and the body of the member 31 extend. It will be understood that in this way the end 29 of the outer blanket 17 may be secured to the apron 27 and that the securing or clamping member 32 may be moved longitudinally of the rods 28 and 30 to clamp the parts as desired. How- 'ever, should it be so desired, the securing or clamping member 32 may be manufactured of resilient material so that its sides at the opening 22 may be separated to enclose the rods 28 and 30 with the parts of the apron 27 and the member 31.
When the outer blanket 17 has been secured to the apron 27 in the manner demay be freed from the bolts 15 to permit the removal of the plate 18 with the portions of the blanket attached thereto. An-
other pair of blankets may then be applied, either with the same plate 18 or with another plate 18, which has been secured to the blankets by means "of the teeth '21 and the new blankets may be secured to the blanket cylinder 10 in the manner which has been described.
There are cut-away portions 32 in the clampng member 32 through which the bolts 15 and the nuts 22 may pass. This makes it possible to conveniently introduce the clamping member 32 through the opening 14 in the blanket cylinder 10.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. In combination with a cylinder having a transverse opening in its periphery, a transverse plate normally disposed in the opening and having a roughened face for normally engaging and pressing a blanket against the cylinder at the opening, the plate being provided with teeth extending from its inner edge for engaging the blanket, and means to secure the plate to the cylinder.
2. In combination with a cylinder having a transverse opening in its periphery, bolts extending from the cylinder into the open ing, a transverse plate normally disposed in the opening and having apertures in which the bolts are normally disposed, the transverse plate serving to press a blanket against the cylinder in the opening and being provided with teeth at its inner edge for engaging the blanket, and nuts on the bolts for pressing the transverse plate against the blanket. v
3. In combination with a blanket cylinder, an apron having an outer transversely enlarged end, tightening means to draw the inner end of the apron relatively to the cylinder, a blanket having a transversely enlarged member, and a transversely extending securing member normally embracing the enlarged end of the apron and the enlarged blanket member and having an opening through which the body of the apron and the member beyond its enlarged end extend.
4. In combination with a blanket cylinder having a transverse opening in its periphery, bolts extending from the cylinder into the opening, a transverse plate normally 'disposed in the opening and having apertures in which the bolts are normally disposed, a blanket having an end with openings in which the bolts are disposed, the transverse plate serving to press the blanket againstthe cylinder in the opening, nuts on the bolts for pressing the transverse plate against the blanket, an apron having an outer transversely enlarged end, tightening means to draw the inner end of the apron relatively to the cylinder, the blanket having a transversely enlarged member and a transversely extending securing member normally embracng the enlarged end of the apron and the enlarged blanket member and having an opening through which 'the body of'the 'apron and the member beyond its enlarged end extend.
