This invention relates to cigarpackages and more particularly to a cigar envelop having a sealing tape adhesively secured thereto over its folded ends and longitudinal seam to form a water proof and air tight package. The main object of this invention, therefore, is to provide a waterproof and air tight cigar envelop without heat sealing the folded ends and longitudinal seam thereof. With this and other objects not specifically mentioned in view, the invention consists in certain constructions and combinations hereinafter fully described and then specifically set forth in the claims hereunto appended.

In forming cigar envelops the cigar is usually enclosed in a strip of material such as cellophane or the like, which is severed from a continuous web, and tightly folded about the cigar to overlap its longitudinal edges on the cigar in a longitudinal seam. The ends of the envelop are then folded in any suitable manner, and the longitudinal seam and folded ends may be heat sealed to obtain By this invention the heat sealing operation may be dispensed with, and the longitudinal seam and folded ends may be provided .with a sealing tape to produce a water proof and air tight cigar envelop.

The sealing tape used may be adhesively coated cellophane or paper which will remain "tacky indefinitely. A suitable adhesive for coating the cellophane or paper is described in the patent to F. W. Farrell, Reissue No. 17,760, Aug. 5,1930, and material coated with this adhesive has been found to be suitable for the sealing strips. To facilitate the opening of the cigar envelop a thread having projecting ends may be disposed under the tape, so that the ends of the thread may be seized to tear the tape from the envelop.

In carrying the invention into effect there is provided a water proof and air tight package comprising a cigar envelop having a sealing tape adhesively secured thereto. In the best forms of construction contemplated, the sealing tape may be formed of paper or cellophane or other suitable material coated with a permanently tacky adhesive. In the best forms of construction, also, the sealing tape may be applied to the ends of the envelop as individual tapes, or may extend along its longitudinal seam over onto the top of the envelop, or the tape may completely encircle the envelop and have its ends overlapped on each other. A thread for tearing the tape loose may project from underneath the same and extend longitudinally or transversely of the envelop so that it may be seized to tear the tape loose from the envelop. These various means and parts may be widely varied in construction within the scope of the claims, for the particular package selected to illustrate the invention is but one of many possible concrete embodiments of the same. The invention, therefore, is not to be restricted to the specific construction shown and described.

Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2 which show one form of the invention, the cigar 10 is enclosed in a cigar envelop 11 formed of cellophane, water-proofed cellophane or any other suitable material and having folded ends 12 and a longitudinal seam 13. In this form of the invention the individual sealing tapes 14 which have an adhesive coating as described in the patent referred to above, are applied over the folded ends of the envelop and adhere thereto by means of their adhesive coating. The tapes 14 have one end secured over the longitudinal seam adjacent the ends of the cigar and extend upwardly over the folded ends, having their other end terminating near the horizontal center of the folded ends. As the ends of the cigar envelops are folded downwardly over the longitudinal seam, the sealing tapes 14 will not be visible from above when packed in a cigar box, and yet will cause the, envelops to be substantially air tight and water proof.

In the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, the sealing tape 16 extends over the longitudinal seams and adheres thereto by means of its adhesive coating. The ends of the tape 16 are carried up over the folded ends of the cellophane envelop 11 and are folded back over its top so as to appear as ornamental tips when colored tape is employed.

In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the sealing tape 17 may be of opaque colored paper material with straight or scalloped edges or may be colorlessand transparent cellophane. In this form of construction the sealing tape 17 completely encircles the cellophane envelop 11 longitudinally and adheres to the envelop throughout its entire length. The ends of the tape 17 are overlapped and the upper end of the tape adheres to its lower end.

A thread for tearing the sealing tape, either transversely as shown at 18 in Figs. 3 and 4, or longitudinally as at 19 in Figs. 5 and 6, may be used with each of the various forms of the inventions. In Figs. 3 and 4 the thread 18 extends transversely of the envelop so that its projecting ends may be seized to tear the sealing tape transversely. The thread 19 in Figs. 5 and 6 extends along the longitudinal seam of the envelop and has one end projecting from between the overlapped ends of the sealing tape to permit the tape to be torn longitudinally. In this manner the cigar may readily be removed from its envelop. An ornamental cigar band 20 as shown in Fig. 1 may also be applied to the package in any of its modifications.

It will be apparent that an air tight and water proof package of highly attractive appearance is obtained by the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. A cigar envelop formed of cellophane and having folded ends and a longitudinal seam, and provided with a permanently tacky sealing strip secured over said longitudinal seam and folded ends, and also provided with a thread under said sealing strip having its ends projecting transversely of the cigar envelop, whereby said ends of the thread may be seized to tear said sealing strip from the cigar envelop.
