1932. Serial This invention relates to washable neckties or similar articles and methods of making the same.

One object of the invention is to provide an improved longitudinally folding necktie which can be readily opened up into'blank form for cleaning and ironing, and subsequently refolded for wear.

Another object of the invention is to furnish a four-in-hand necktie which consists of a plurality of portions transversely interengaged in an improved manner to permit the necktie to be folded into a tapered form.

Another object of the invention is to furnish a four-in-hand necktie which is made by longitudinally folding in an improved manner and according to a predetermined gauge scheme tocause the necktie to possess a uniform conformation.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved necktie of the typementioned which is made of a blank longitudinally folded and retained by releasable fastening means; and which is neat, simple, and rep liable in construction and use; and also to.

a novel method of making or folding the necktie. V

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the speci-' fication proceeds. J

WVith the aforesaid objects in view, the invention consists inthe novel combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described in their preferred embodiments, 35 pointed out in the subjoined claims, and il-' lustrated on the annexed drawing, wherein like parts are designated by the same reference characters throughout the several views.

Generally described, this invention provides a four-inhand necktie, or similar article, which is intended to be opened up into the form of a blank for cleaning. It may then be refolded into the usual necktie shape. j Since the necktie tapers toward the neck portion, the latter is constructed to have a transverse curve to permit the folds to lie smoothly. One manner of making the blank for the necktie consists informing the same of separate blank portions having inner curved concave edges which maybe stitched together. The part of the blank along the stitched line is thus provided with a pre- 7 formed fulness' with respect to the center line ofthe blank, providing the necessary distribution of material to cause the necktie to fold along diverging lines without wrinkles and to lie perfectly smooth and flat. To accomplish this result with maximum degree of uniformity in the smoothness of the necktie and also in the other characteristics thereof,

including the positioning of the ends, the blank may act as a gage in the folding operation. The necktie can therefore be made up in a rapid and reliable manner. 'Any suitable fastening means of a releasable type acts to retain the necktie folded and permits the opening up thereof for the purpose aforesaid.

Referring in detail to the drawing, denotes a device embodying the invention. The same includes a four-in-hand necktie, or similar article, which is made of any suitable material, as for example, cotton or silk, so as to be especially adapted for washing or other cleaning operations.

The said necktie includes a main blank 11, which may consist of two or more pieces 12 and 13. The said pieces have their inner ends cut in curved concave lines 14, 15, which may extend along a bias. The 15- are stitched together at 16 providing a curved portion 17. This curved part will cause the blank 11 to have a preformed fulness with respect to the center line, to permit the blank 11 to be smoothly folded along tapering lines, as hereinafter described.

The pieces 12, 13 have their side edges 18, 19 out along tapering lines toward the neck portion 20 having the said curve 17. The

outer ends of the said pieces have points 21, or the like, substantially symmetrically disposed with respect to a'central longitudinal axis 22 of the blank 11.

Asshownat 23, a re-entrant angle may be formed in the blank 11 at the neck portion to afford less material at this section.

Provided in the blank are any suitable releasable fastening means which may include alined separable head and socket portions 25, 26 that are easily opened and closed by a spring, snap action. These are quite small and are so arranged as to be concealed and housed within the necktie when the'same is in folded position. Any required number of these may be used, as, for instance, at the neck and end portions of the necktie.

' The manner of folding the blank 11 will now be described. The said blank is folded to bring the opposite edges 18, 19 together,

the foldline 27 falling on the axis 22, as shown in Fig. 4. Next the blank is folded in thirds as follows: The edge portion remote from the fold line 27 is brought upward making a second fold line 28, as in Fig. 5. Both fastener portions 25, 26 now face upward. Then the third and final fold is made along a third fold line such as 29 shown in Fig. 1,

completing the folding of the blank into thirds. In making the third fold, the fastener portions 25, 26 are brought into registry and may be snapped'together, in concealed position within the necktie. The latter, fully complete for use and wear, is shown in Fig. 1, and is of the conventional type. It will be noted that the nature and positions of the fold lines may be determined solely by the tapering character of the edges 18, 19. The necktie is free of any seam, filler, or other device, which would complicate the construction thereof, render it diflicult to form a knot in thenecktie, or interfere with the attainment of the objects herein specified.

To clean or wash the necktie, the releasable fastening means is opened. The necktie may then be washed and ironed, and in ironing the folds are again made as above stated and the separable fasteners interengaged.

It will thus be seen thatI have provided a device which fulfills the several objects of the invention, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions'of practical use.

I claim:

-1.' A necktie consisting of a blank structure, having a neckband portion provided with a preformed curve concaved toward the ends of the blank structure, the latter being longitudinally. folded along diverging lines with respect to the center line, forming the necktie.

2. A necktie consisting of a blank structure having a neckband portion provided at the sides of the center line with a preformed fulness with respect to said center line of the blank structure, the latter being folded along substantially straight diverging lines with respect to said center line, whereby the neck tie can be unfolded, cleaned, and readily refolded. 7

3. A necktie consisting of a blank having a neckband portion provided at the sides of the center line with a preformed fulness with respect to said center line, the latter being folded at the said center line with the side edges of the blank in substantial coincidence, the blank so, folded being longitudinally folded along diverging lines substantially in thirds, whereby the necktie can beunfolded, cleaned and readily refolded.
