UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
EDWARD B. MURPHY AND CHARLES D. BRAMELL, OF SOUTH POINT, MO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN- GUARDS FOR PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,128, dated April 3, 1877 application filed J anuary 29, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatwe, EDWARD B. MURPHY and CHARLES D. BRAMELL, of South Point, in the county of Franklin and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corn-Guard for Plows,of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a top view of our improved guard. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, partly in section, through the casting.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for attachment to the beams of plows to prevent soil and clods from being thrown against the young plants.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out'in the claim.
A is a hollow cylindrical casting, made with its outer end closed, and upon the upper and lower sides of which are formed lugs a to receive two bolts, B, which pass above and below the plow-beam and through the ends of a bar, 0, placed upon the other side of the said beam, so as to clamp it between the said casting and bar. D is-the guard'plate, the forward end of which is inclined and is attached to the inclined rear part of the bar E.
The upper part of the bar E is bent forward at an angle, enters a slot in the rear side of the casting A, and is pivoted to the center of the end of said casting by-a bolt, F.
To the upper forward part of the inner surface of the side of the casting A is attached the end of a spring, G, which passes up along the inner surface of said forward part, passes out through a hole in the top of the casting A, and its free end rests upon the bar E, to hold the guard-plate D down to the ground and, at the same time, allow it to rise to pass over an obstruction.
The device may be attached to the beam of a shovel-plow, a turn-plow, or any other desired kind of a plow. The inner end of the casting A is inclined, as shown in Fig. 1, to bring the plate D to the proper distance from the plow.
Having thus described our invention, we are aware that it is not, broadly, new to secure the crooked bar of a fender to the side of a plow-beam by a clasp or guide and spring connection; but
What we claim as new, and of our invention, is-
The combination, with a fender and its crooked bar D E, of the hollow casting A, arc-slotted and provided with slotted lugs a, the bolts B, slotted bar 0, pivot F, and spring G, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
