UNITED STATES PATENT Q EIoE;
HIRAM COLLINS, OF AMESBURY, MASSACHUSETTS. V
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY ATTACHMENTS FOR TRAVELING-BAGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,083, dated April 3, 1877; application filed February 6, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 'I, HIRAM OoLLINs, of Amesbury, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented. anew and useful Safety Attachment for Work or Travelers Bags, Vallses, or Portmanteaus; and do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figurel is a side view; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of a work or travelers bag provided with my invention, the purpose of which is to enable a person, in order to prevent the bag from being accidentally removed or stolen, to securely fasten it to an object, as, for instance, the arm of a railway-car seat, or the baggage-rack, generally placed above such in the car.
In carrying out my invention I provide the bag A, having a lock for its mouth, with a chain,- B, and a latching-bolt, O, and also with a hole, D, through the mouth-frame E, to receive such latching-bolt. The chain may be fastened by its ring at one end to the mouth-frame of the bag, as shown at a, in which case the chain may constitute the baghandle, or it may be provided with a larger ring at one end, as shown at b. The other end of the chain has jointed to it the latchingbolt 0, provided with a locking-spring, c, all being as shown.
This latching-bolt, when pressed far enough intothe hole D to carry the spring beyond the hole, will be held in place by the spring, which, while the bolt may be passing into the hole, will be close up to the bolt. The spring, after passing the hole, will, by its inherent elasticity, be thrown out, so as to latch the bolt to the mouth-frame. By pressing back the spring the bolt may be Withdrawn from the hole.
4 When the chain is connected at one end to the bag, or constitutes the handle thereof, it, in order to fasten the bag to a car-seat arm, may be passed around the armor one of the supports, after which the latching-bolt should be inserted in the hole D. While the bag may be locked it cannot be discharged from the arm, because, in order to accomcomplish this, the bag must first be opened in order to get at and force back the spring of the bolt, which must be done preparatory to withdrawing the bolt. In the place of the spring there may be substituted some device or devices, such as will not, only prevent the bolt from being drawn out of the hole, but cannot be reached without first opening the bag. When the ring of the. chain is not attached to the bag, the chain, after having been carried around the object, is to be passed through the ring, the latching-bolt being next inserted in the hole D of the frame of the bagmouth.
It is to be understood that the bag, valise, trunk, or portmanteau, having the safety attachment, as described, is to be provided with a lock, L, for securely locking the mouth or the cover when closed.
1 do not claim a bag-fastener, formed of an angle-plate, provided with an arm, a chain, and
a link, all as shown in the United States Patent No. 156,481, such requiring the bag to be unlocked and opened in order to efiect the securing of the angle-plate to it; whereas my improved fastener is self-fastening, and can be latched to the bag when the latter is locked. Nor do I claim a bag-fastener provided with a perforated plate adapted to enter a hole in the movable frame, and to receive the bolt or catch of the look ofsuch bag.
With my fastener the holeD is separate from the lock, and is made in one jaw of the handle-frame. It does not receive the bolt of the look, and requires no movement of such bolt to'effect the latching of it in the said fastener. My fastening remains latched when the bag is open'as well as when it is closed. Thus, while the bag is secured to an object by the fastening, such bag may be locked or unlocked, or opened or closed, without detaching the fastening at its locking or latching end; therefore I claim The chain or handle, provided with the spring-catch, in combination with the frame of the valise or bag, provided with the perforation or aperture adapted to receive and hold thecatch, substantially as set forth.
I HIRAM COLLINS.
