Description

E. C. VENABLE.
MARKING PLUG TOBACCO.
No. 188,991. Patented March 27,1877.
INVE TO max/s.
NPETERS. PHOTO-LITNOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, o C.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE EDWARD O. VENABLE, OF PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MARKING PLUG-TOBACCO.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,991, dated March 27, 1877; application filed February 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Enw. G. VENABLE, of Petersburg, in the county of Dinwiddie, and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plug- Tobacco; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of a skeleton metallic frame of any suitable shape, which is provided with teeth or points for the double purpose of holding a tag or label, and of securing both the frame and label to a plug of tobacco, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and application.
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a view of a plug of tobacco, with the frame and label attached. Figs. 2 and 3 are views of the metallic'framc.
In the figures, A represents a plug of tobacco, and B the metallic frame. The frame,
in this instance, is struck up in annular form, with points or spurs upon its periphery. The center of this frame is cut away, as seen, so that the label can be exposed through it. When the label is placed against the frame two or more of the points or spurs 0 c are bent down over it to confine the two together. When the frame is then placed upon the tobacco the points 0 c, Fig. 3, are forced into it, and thus confined to the plug.
It is not necessary that this frame should be made round, but may be made in any shape desired, so that it is a rim-frame with spurs upon it to confine the label to the plug, allowing the label to show through it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A metallic rim-frame having spurs for in closing a label, and confining same to a plug of tobacco, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of February, 1877.
EDWARD G. VENABLE.
