To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL H. BUELL, citizen of the United States, residing at Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Label-Holder for Trees, &c., of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to labeling devices and is especially designed for use in connection with trees, although it can be employed equally as well with shrubs, plants, flowers, animals, merchandise and the like. It is well known that in many orchards the identity of the trees becomes lost, owing to the fact that the names on the labels originally employed are obliterated through the action of snow, rain and other elements.

The principal object of this invention is to provide a labeling device of the class described which will positively prevent the elements from acting upon the label, and which will readily permit of the label being withdrawn to be inspected.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described in which a label holder is adapted to be retained within a casing, the holder and the casing coacting in a novel manner to retain the holder within the said casing.

A still further object of the invention is to provide such a device which is preferably formed of aluminum or other suitable material., is simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.

With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

tteferring to the drawing, it will be seen that the invention comprises a casing designated as a whole by the numeral 6a. This casing is preferably formed of aluminum and is formed of two side members 6 and 7 respectively, the member 6 being provided with an overturned edge or lip 8. This edge extends along the two sideedges and one end ofthe easing and is adapted to overlap and receive the outer edges 9 of the member 6,.and thereby secure the members together. These members are respectively pressed outwardly substantially the whole length thereof to form a hollow casing for a purpose hereinafter described. One end 10 thereof is made flat, and is provided with an opening 11 through which any` suitable suspending means 12 may be passed and secured to the said casing. The other or lower end of the y member 7 is provided with a forwardly extending and inwardly curved integral spring lip 13 having a {iat edge.

The invention further comprises a label holder designated as a whole by the numeral 141. This holder is likewise preferably formed of aluminum, although other material can be employed if desired. The holder comprises longitudinally arranged and over-` turned edges 16 and 17 respectively, adapted to receive a label 18. One end 19 is bent to form a transverse groove 21 which is adapted to co-act with the lip 13 of the casing as clearly shown by reference `to Figs. 1 and 2, and thereby retain the said holder' within the casing. The holder is `extended beyond the transverse groove 21 to form a thumb-piece 20 for a purpose hereinafter described.

It will be observed that the overturned edges 16 and 17 extend the entire length of the holder including the transverse groove 21 and the thumb-piece 20. The said edges thus reinforce the groove and the thumbpiece, and thereby prevent either from accidentally bending or becoming broken.

In operation, the device is suspended from a tree or the like by the fastening means 12 in such a manner that the open end will be downward and the closed end upward, thereby preventing any possibility of moisture entering the said casing and injuring the label therein. Should it be desired to read the label, the casing is grasped by one hand,

and the thumb of the other handl is placed against vthe thumb-piece 2O of the label holder. The said holder is forced out from the casing against the action of the lip 1S. After the name has been read the holder is slid back into place, when the said lip will automatically engage. in the transverse 'groove 2l as before explained.

one end thereof being open and the other end closed, one of the members having an .integral spring lip inwardly and forwardly extending from the casing at the open end thereof, and a label holder slidably mounted Within the casing and provided with overturned longitudinal edges extending the en-v tire length thereof and adapted to receive a label, one end thereof being bent to form a transverse groove adapted to be engaged by the lip of the casing for retaining the holder within the said casing, the holder terminating beyond the said groove in a thumbpiece for disengaging and removing the holder from the casing.
