This invention relates to Sharpeners primarily designed to restore the cutting edges of safety razor blades without necessitating removal of the blades from the holder.
Another of the objects of the invention consists in the provision of a handle portion for the Sharpener.
More specifically stated the Sharpener in and of itself is shaped to expose a corner lo toward the cutting edges of a blade to turn down or otherwise depress the upturned feather cutting edge of the blade.
With the above .and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the method of sharpening razor blades while retained within the usual holder.
Figure 2 isa perspective view of the invention per se.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view taken through the cutting element and a portion of the handle having connection therewith.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates generally a handle member, preferably of relatively flat plate like formation and of elliptical shape throughout the major portion of its length to facilitate effective gripping thereof by the hand. A neck or reduced .extension 11 projecting from one end of the handle body subsequently terminates to provide an enlargement, such as indicated at 12, for purposes to be better understood in the following description of the invention.
The aligning element consists of a length of material, such as indicated at 13, preferably rectangular in cross section and preferably composed of tool steel. The enlargement 12 is provided with an opening 14 to partially accommodate the sharpening element and to facilitate projecting of an appreciable portion of the handle within an 5c intermediately disposed reduced portion or pocket 15 whereby independent lateral shifting motion of the sharpening element with vrelation to the handle will be prevented.
From the illustrations of the invention in Figures 2 and 4 of the drawing, it is noted that a corner of the cross section rectangular element projects outwardly and beyond the opening 14 in the enlargement 12.
In actual practice, the razor blade is ree0 tained in active position within its customary holder and upright, to expose the cutting edge or edges of the blade to the eye. The feather edge or edges of the blade will be upturned incident to the shaving operation and in the aligning thereof, it is necessary that this upturned feather edge should be defiected. In accomplishing this end, the handle 10 is grasped in the manner suggested in Figure 1 of the drawing whereby the mentioned 70 edge of the cutting element may rest partially upon the exposed portions of the blade and the upturned feather edge. The usual saddle plate arranged upon the outer surface of the blade will form a guide or guides for the element, as same is shifted longitudinally of the edges.
If desired, the blade may be reversed within the holder and sharpened upon both sides of each cutting edge in the manner suggested So in the foregoing.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
A blade Sharpener and edge aligner comprising a handle consisting of a fiat piece of materia-l provided at its end with an enlargement, said enlargement having an opening leading in from the edge thereof, said opening having converging side Walls, and an aligning element fitting in the opening of the head portion and having an edge disposed beyond the edge of the head portion, said element having end portions disposed beyond the side surfaces of said head portion and the aligning element having a pocket recess receiving an edge of the opening of the enlargement.
