AV AV :5 V A V JEAN GARRE'I, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Apr.16, 1912.
To all 'wli 'om'it may concern Be it known that I, JEAN GARRET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsstruction which will admit of the blade be-.
ing accurately positioned and retained in place against accidental movement, the device being light in structure and-readily separable for sanitary purposes'and to admit of sharpening the blade or replacing a .dull blade by a new or a sharp one.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in.
the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a safety razor embodying the invention, parts being broken away." ,Fig. 2 1s a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the frame is formed. Fig. 4 is a sectionon the line H of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail viewof the blank from which the blade holder i's'formed. Fig. '6 is a detail view in perspective of the blade.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and
indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
The frame'comprises a base 1 and a guard 2, the base being ofoblong form and the guard 2 being located at one edge thereof and of substantially U-form'in cross section and consisting of an edge portion of the plate from which the frame is formed bent into the shape substantially .as shown. The outer edge of the guard 2 is scallopedor undulating so as to provide projecting portions to touch the skin and preventthe blade cutting into the same. The spaces between the teeth or projecting portions admit of the 7 Application filed January 31, 1911. Serial-No. 605,708.
blade bearing upon the skin so as to remove the lather and growth of hair therefrom. The base and guard are formed from a blank having the outline substantially as indicated in Fig. 3, an edge portion of the blank having portions cut therefrom to provide an undulatingedge of the guard and -an open structure adjacent the guard for the sake of lightness and to admit of water reaching the lather so as to clean the frame after using the implement. Portions are pressed upwardly from the base to form loops or keepers 3: The handlemay be detachably connected to the frame and preferably consists of two parts 4 and 5 which are connected: by means of a screw joint so that the length'of the handle may be reduced when it is required to pack the article in compact form. The handle is detachably connected to the frame, the latter having a shank which is externally threaded to receive the threaded end of the handle.
The blade 6 is of oblong form and adapted to be supported upon the base 1 with an edge portion overhanging the guard 2 and approaching close to the outer edge of'the guard. Openings 7 are fdrmed in the blade 6 to receive the loops or keepers 3, said openings being positioned to admit of the blade being placed upon the base 1 with either side up or with either edge overhanging the guard. The blade is sharpened upon both edges, thereby admitting of its reversal upon the base. When theblade is in position upon the base the loops or keepers project a short distance above the same so as to receive tongues 8 of the blade holder, said tongues passingthrough the loops or keepers and extending over the blade to confine the same.
The holder consists of a plate .9 having tongues 8 at one edge, said plate having a finger piece 10. The finger piece 10 ispreferably formed by bending a portion ofthe plate into a roll. The friction of the plate upon the blade and the friction of the tongues 8 within the keepers 3 is usually suflicient to retain the holder in place. However, for greater safety the blade holder may be provided with a spring clip 11, the latter being formed by folding the plate upon itself substantially in the manner indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The finger piece 10 is formed by partly cutting a portion of such changes may be made when desired as 1 are within the scope of the claims appended the plate, as indicated in Fig. 5, and bending the part so cut to provide a roll,
which extends in front of the platein position to be conveniently grasped. When the blade holder is removed from the frame the blade may be lifted from the frame and the parts thoroughly cleansed by passing the same repeatedly through water or holding the same in a running stream.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now considerto be the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shownis merely illustrative, and that hereto.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. In a safety razor, the combination of a base, a blade supported upon the base, and a holder comprising a clip for securing the blade upon the base, said clip having a por- 'tion partly cut therefrom and bent into a roll which extends from the clip to provide a finger piece. T 2. In a safety razor, the combination of a base provided with a keeper, a blade supported upon the base and having an opening for the passage of the keeper, and a holder having a tongue passing through sa1d keeper and further provided with a clip to embrace the blade and base.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two, witnesses.
JEAN GARRET.
