rarest eerie-Ef;
NoruvrAN w. nicks, or SACRAMENTO, earrrennrn Applicatidn filed January 18, 1.932. Serial No. 587,272. l
This` inventionl relates to binders of the v loose leaf typeandhespecially to one designed for use with the bookkeeping systems of of- `lices in connectionwith the paying of checks and the entering of the amounts paid on a recording sheet. This is now done by mak-1 ing the entries on the stubs of the check book and subsequently transferring such entries to a day book or ledger; or by recording the entries directly on to a book or sheet as the checks are made out. In either case two separate books or binders are necessary and quick and efficient operation is impeded. The principal object of my invention is to avoid the above objectionable features by providing a binder arranged to contain an entry sheet as well as a check pad, and the pad is mounted in connection with the binder and sheet in such a manner that the sheet may be written on from top to bottom without removing the pad or without making the binder excessively long or deep to accommodate the pad so that this result may be obtained. By means of my improved binder therefore the work of thebookkeeper or cashier is made easy and his Work expedited and the necessary sheets and pad are maintainedl in a more compact and handy Vform than is possible with the facilities at present provided.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.
These objects l accomplish byv means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and. claims.
In the drawing similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the binder closed.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the binder partly opened, one cover being shown cut off yan the other partly broken away.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the check pad mounting unit detached.
` "the entry sheet.
4 is a fragmentary enlarged section taken lon the line 4% of Fig. 2. 1
Referring new `more particularly to the characters ofjreference' onthe drawing, the binder comprises a rigid back l provided witha pair of covers 2 and 3 which are hinged at the left and right hand ends respectively of the back. Projecting' upwardly from the back adjacent its left hand end and toward j the top and bottom are posts a. These posts serve as locating means for lthe entry sheet 5 which is punched to lit the posts, andalso as a mounting means for 'the check pad support. This 'support comprises sleeves 6 slidably niou'nted on the posts over the sheet 5 and `ing said rod. Spaced binding posts 1l project vupwardly from the plate and are arn ranged to project through the correspondingly punched stubs l2 of the check pad 18. The
length of the rod between the sleeves relative to thelength of the plate and the height of the pad isl such that more than one-half the height ofthe. sheet 5 is exposed for writing purposes when'the plate and pad are slid along so as to be at one endor the other o-f the rod as indicated in Fig. 2. When-the upper half of the sheet is being written on therefore the pad is retained at the lower end of the rod.
and when the upper half of the sheet is full thepad is slid toI the top of the rod and retained there while the lower half of the sheet is being written on.
p At no time does the pad have to be lifted up or removedin order to permit of any entry be-ingmade, and the pad always remains in "closely associated and convenient relation to f y Said sheetcan of course be easily' removed whenever necessary by merely withdrawing the screws 7 and taking off the sleeves and rod as a unit. Y
The .size of the back member l is such that the sheet l which is relatively large as comon the rod.
pared With the check pad, may remain outstretched on said back member Without being folded. The Width of the right hand cover 3 is preferably such that when closed over the adjacent portion of the entry sheet it will miss the check pad as shown in Fig. 2, While the cover 2 is of course designed to cover the pad and the remainder of the sheet 5. W'hen Writing a check therefore it is not necessary to open the cover 3, and on the other hand When tail the present andrpreferred construction of the device, still in practice such devia tions from such detail ymay be resorted to 5. A binder for use in connection with an entry sheet and a check pad, the height of the sheet being greatly in excess of that of the pad, said binder comprising a back member on Which to rest the sheet, sheet engaging means mounted on the member adjacent its left hand edge, and means mounted in connection With said sheet engaging means to support the pad for movement up and down the sheet and so that said pad Will extend toward the right from adjacent the left hand edge of the sheet, the length of said sheet being in excess of that of the pad, and cooperating covers hinged on the member along its right and left hand edges; the length of the left hand cover being sufficient to completely cover the pad While the right hand one may remain closed without interfering With'the use of the pad.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
NORMAN W. HICKS.
as do not form a departure from the spirit i of the invention, as defined by the appended claims. Y
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and useful and desire to secure b v Letters Patent is:
1. A binder comprising a back member, Y,
spaced binding posts projecting upwardly from said member adjacent one side of the same, a plate having binding posts upstanding therefrom, said platehaving a length less than the spacing 'of the first named posts,
and means supporting said plate for sliding movement between the first named posts.
2. A .binder comprising a back member, spaced binding posts projecting upwardly from said member adjacent one side of the saine, sleeves removably mounted on the posts, a. rod extending between the sleeves, and a unit to support a check pad slidably mounted 3. A binder comprising a back member, spaced binding posts projecting upwardly from said member adjacent the left hand side of the same, a rod extending between the posts, means removably supporting said rod in connection With the posts, a plate parallel to the rod to the right of the same, earsprojectiiig from the plate and slidably engaging the rod, and means for supporting engagement with the stubs of a check pad mounted on the plate. Y
4. A binder for use in connection With an entry sheet and a check pad, the height yof the sheet being greatly in excess Vof that of the pad, said binder comprising a back meinber on which to rest the sheet, sheet engaging. 'means mounted .on the member adjacent its left hand edge, and means mounted in connection 'with said sheet engaging means to support the pad for movement upV and ,down the sheet.
