Description

Nov. 22, 1932. w. F. HERST SEWER CLEANING IMPLEMENT Filed April 2. 1951 mCZ MJL mu dmuqs Patented Nov. 22, 1932 UNITED STTES i PATENT [OFFICE WARD F. HERST, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIG-NOR T0 WOLVERINEBRASS WORKS, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN' SEWER-CLEANING IMPLEMENT Application filed April 2,
The present invention relates to sewercleaning implements;iand its object, generally, is to provide in combination with the long flexible headed rod usually employed for cleaning sewers, drain pipes and the like, an improved device adapted to be clamped on the rod and having a lever handle for moving the rod longitudinally in the sewer or pipe.
This and other and more specific objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the device particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a View in perspective of a device adapted to be clamped on a sewer-cleaning rod for operatively moving the same in its longitudinal direction;
Figure 2 is a side view of said device and M an edgewise view of the rod, partially sectipned on line 22 of Figure 3; Figure 3 is a sectional view of the same taken 'on line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a side view of the inner portion of the lever handle of said device; and
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of a clamp shoe thereof.
In this drawing is shown a long flat flexible rod 1 provided at one end with a cleaner head 1 2 of common form employed for cleaning sewers, drain pipes and the like, and a device designated generally 3 clamped in various positions along the rod for moving the same longitudinally in the sewer.
This device 3 is hollow (i. e. the rod 1 passes through it) one flat side 4: of the rod, except when clamped as hereinafter described bearing slidably on the inner surface 5 of the bottom 6 of the device, and the devices sides 7 extending around the opposite edges 8 of the rod.
A lever 9 is fulcrumed on a pivot pin 10 mounted on said sides 7 and extending through their openings 11, which pin may have the head 12 and the thumb nut 13 on its 1931. Serial No. 527,132.
by said line and the high points 16 and 174 of the earns 16, 17 respectively being remote from said line and on the opposite sides thereof.
A clamp shoe 19 in the hollow device 3 has a middle or body portion 20 extending between the rod 1 and the inner end of the lever, and opposite sides 21 provided with outwardly extending slots or bearings 22 through which the pivot pin 10 passes, and bears slidably in the movement of the shoe- It will be seen that when the lever is turned to the position seen in Figures 1 and 2, the cam 17 is turned into operative engagement with the shoe to clamp the rod between the shoe and said bottom 6, and that the same manual movement which thus turns the lever operates to draw the rod toward the right hand side of Figure 2; and that when the lever is turned to its opposite position the other cam 16 engages the shoe and the rod is moved toward the left hand side of Figure 2; and that when the lever is turned to an intermediate position the rod is released and the desired new position to be clamped on the rod.
It will also be seen that the lever, the pivot pin, the shoe and the body 3 itself of the device are all held in cooperating position by a single part, the nut 13.
I claim:
A handle for operating an elongated tool comprising: a hollow member having a bottom on whose inner surface the tool bears slidably in its longitudinal direction, and
toward or from the bottomfi of the device.
vice may be slid freely therealong to a de-'- sides extending around the opposite edges of the tool a pivot pin mounted on said sides; a lever fulcrumed on the pivot pin, and having a cam inner end and an outer end handle portion, said lever being turnable to a position wherein its inner end clamps the tool on said bottom so that the tool may be moved longitudinally by the lever turned to its said position; a clamp shoe having a middle portion extending between the tool and the inner end of the lever, and sides provided with outwardly extending hearings in which the pivot pin slidably bears.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Grand Rapids, Michigan this 30th day of March, 1931.
