Patented Dec. 4, 1923.
newALn r. RUDE, or cnroheo, rumors TOOL.
Application filed September 13, 1921. Serial No. 500,354.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, INGWALD F. RUDE, a citizen of the. United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
'My invention relates to tools and has particular reference to screw-drivers. The object of the present invention is to add greatly to the power and e-ificiency of the ordinary screw-driver in such a manner as to not interfere with its customary conveniences, by providing it with a lever which normally forms a part of the usual 1 handle and is quickly adjustable into its lever-operating position. to increase manifold the ordinary screw-turning power where the greater resistances are encountered as in turning in long screws or inserting screws in hard material.
l/Vith the above named object in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangementof parts hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Inthe drawing- Figure 1 is a view of a screw-driver embodying my invention, with the lever in closed or inoperative position, its open or pperative position being shown by dotted ines.
Figure 2 is a similar view on a reduced scale taken in a longitudinal plane at right angles to the plane of Figure 1 with the lever extended at right angles to its extended position in Figure In the several views 2 rep-resents the blade or bit which is shown in the present illustration with a squared shank portion 3 which is secured through the usual tang, or otherwise, to a handle 4 on which 5 represents the ordinary ferrule. To the portion 3 the leverage is applied, a lever 6 being connected therewith to normally lie parallel with the handle and to be movable at right angles thereto by either a combined sliding and angular movement as in reaching the dotted line position of Figure 1, or by a chiefly pivotal movement, as in Figure 2. In the present embodiment the connection of the lever 6 with the shank portion is a bent, lug, or, as it were, a journal portion 7 formed of one end of the lever: and an elongated opening 8 through the portion3 occupied;
by said part 7 in either its closed or open position as in Figure 2, orby any; portion of the lever 6., to shorten it, in its dotted line *osition of Figure 1, the extreme ends 0 the latter having stops 9 and 10. The lever 6 isheld in its closed or inoperative position shown in full lines: in Figure 1 by a moderate frictional engagement with the sides of a slot or depression 11in the side of the handle, including a hemispherical recess 12 adapted to receive the stop portion, or ball 10, which, like its companion stop 9, is an enlargement of the end of'the lever which is made of suificient size to prevent its passagethrough the opening. 8. The recess 11 is preferably lengthen or N? oFIciE. Y I
made of a depth to receive about half of the thickness of the lever, so that only onehalf of said thickness projects beyond the periphery ofqthe ordinary handle. This projection is an aid tothe ordinary grip to the handle, or when disengaged from the Y 7 slot and operatively extended the blade may be turned by means of the lever operated with one hand while the other hand holds the handle stationary.
In the adjustment from full to dot-ted line positions of Figure-l the lever is pulled out of its bed orseat l1 and while being swung away from the handle slid longitudinally through the opening 8, a curved portion 13 being formed between the body of the lever and its lug portion? for that. purpose, until said lug is out of the opening 8 and lies parallel with the handle as in. its dotted line position. Thus adjusted the lever may be moved longitudinally in thei through, of a obstruction to its full length sweep or r0- tation. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination with a screw-driver having a late-rally extending opening the-relever having a pivot portion engaged with said opening and arranged 1 at right angles to the body of said lever,
signed my name.
said pivot portion and body being rotatably and angularly movable in said opening, and
a recess in the handle of said screw-driverin which said lever is normally held substantially parallel with the blade and handle of said screw-driver. V
In testimony whereof I havefhereunto INGWALD F; RUDE.
