Patented Nov, 15, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT l OFFICE y CHARLES RAYMOND WASEIGE, 0F RUEIL, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR T0 HENRI ET HAUBIC FARMAN, 0F BILLANCOURT, FRANCE SPEED REDUCING OR INCREASING DEVICES FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES Application led September 19, 1928, Serial No. 807,007, VAand in France October 8, 1927.
My invention relates to a new arrangement of the lstarter on internal combustion engines designed for aircrafts and more particularly to such engines provided with a speed reducing gear.
One object of the invention is to minimize the overall bulk taken up by the engine, the reducing speed gear and the starter; another object is to provide for an easy removal of the starter as well as of the gear interposed between the starter and the shaft to be started. With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination, construct-ion and arrangement hereinafter described and more fully pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings which show by way of example an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. l is a vertical lengthwise section of a speed reducing device with bevel pinions, provided with a starter arranged according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view of said speed reducing device. i Y
Referring now to the drawings, it is assumed that the engine is provided with a speed reduction gear, of the type comprising bevel pinions 60, 61, 62. The starter 26 is carried by a casing 27 forming a small casing secured by means of bolts and nuts or otherwise to the bracket 28 of the speed reducing gear which is pierced with a suitable aperture. The said starter actuates the driving sun-gear 29 of the speed reducing device by the followin gearing; the pinion 30 mounted on the sha t of the starter, engages ,the
toothed gear 3l, the pinion 32, secured to said gear, engages the toothed gear 33 which is loose on its shaft 34 but is held between two discs whereof one is secured to the said shaft and the other is pressed against said gear by a spring 35. At the end of the shaft 34 is mounted the screw pinion 38 of Bendix type, which at the startin engages, by reason of the inertia, the toot ed gear 39 which is bolted to the driving gear 29. Y
It will be observed that this device is of a very simple character and only requires the use of an additional toothed gear 39 which is secured to the speed reduction device; the said gear can be readily attached or removed, all the additional: pieces being taken olf as a whole with the casing 27 inside which they are housed. v
Obviously, the said arrangement is appliv cable to speed reduction devices provided with spur gearing, of the type above described.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
vIn an aircraft, the combination of an enf gine having a crank case and a crankshaft extending in'said crank case and out of said crank case at least on one side of said crank case, a casing secured to said engine on said side of said crank case and in which projects the end of said crankshaft, said casing being provided with an aperture, a propeller shaftV having one end extending in said casing, an epicyclic speed reducing gear in said casing between the engine crank shaft and the propeller shaft, a st-arter gear wheel rigidly connected to the driving sun wheel of said epicyclic gear and disposed in said casing opposite said aperture,a hollow support with an open side adapted to fit with said open side over said aperture of said casing and to be detachably connected with said casing, a countershaft carried by said support and situated within said casing opposite said aperture, a starting motor carried byv said support, intermediate gear wheels in said support and said casing between said starting motor and said countershaft, a screw provided on said countershaft, and a pinion mounted on said screw for rotary movement therewith and longitudinal movement thereon adapted to be brought into and out of engagement vwit-h said starter gear wheel.
In testimonywhereof I have signed my name to this specification.
CHARLES RAYMOND wAsETGE.
