Description

Nov. 8, 1932. A. L. SMITH BOX FOR FACE POWDER AND SIMILAR MATERIAL Filed March 9, 1952 WITNESSES 7 ro ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 8, 1 932 UNITED STATES ARTHUR L. s vrr'rm'or MArL woon, NEW JERSEY BOX. ronracn POWDER AND SIMILAR MATERIAL Application filed March a, 1932. Serial No. 597,840;
An object of the invention is to provide a box having inner and outer walls, the space between the inner and outer walls being covthe sides ofthe said member diverging upwardly from the inner wall to the Outer wall to form an upwardly diverging flange around the top of the inner wall which serves to re'-.
.tain within, the box powder which may fall from a powder ,puif as it is removed from the powder within the innerwall of the box.
Another object of the invention is to provide the member covering the space bet-ween the inner and outer walls with a wall disposed at the inner side of the said inner wall,
the said wall on the member and the said inner wall having apertures which register when the member is in one position relatively to the inner wall, thereby permitting powder and outer walls, it being possible to move the member relatively to the said inner wall to Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing the invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional View on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of therbox, and V Figure 4: is a sectional elevation showing a modified form of the invention.
By referring to the drawing it will be seen that the box has a base 5 and a peripheral circular enclosing wall 6 provided at its bot tom with a flange 7 secured to the periphery of the base 5. The box also has a circular enclosing wall 8 disposed within the peripheral circular enclosing wall 6 and spaced therefrom, the bottom of the enclosing wall 8 having a flange 9 by which it is secured to the base 5. It will be understood that a space 7 10 is formed between the wall 8 and the wall 6 in which the powder 11 may be disposed.
ered by a member with a central opening,
to pass from the space between the inner- The said space 10 is normally enclosed by a. member 12 which has a depending flange 13 engaging. theouter sides oftheperipheral circular enclosing wall 6, the sides of the member 12 converging downwardly from the sidesof the flange 13 to a point 14,- when the sides of the. member 12 then extend downwardly to positions in close proximity to the base 5 forming awall 14. There are apertures 15 in the member 12 adjacent the base 5 and .there are also apertures 16 in the circular enclosing wall'8 which are disposed for registeringwith the apertures 15,-it being possible, however, to rotate the member 12 relatively to the enclosing wall Sand the remainder of the box, so that the, apertures 15 will be disposed at the sides of the apertures 16,thereby closing the apertures 16 with portions of the member 12 disposedat the sides of the apertures 15. a
It will be understood that, .inusing'thej box, the member 12rnay be (removed from the remainder of the box, so'thatthepowder may be disposed in the space 10. between the enclosing walls 6 and 8, when the. member 12 will be. positionedon the enclosing wallsG and 8 as illustratedin Figures 1 and 3. The member12 may be rotated sothat the aper-- tures 15-will register with the apertures 16, when the powder will pass through the said 9 apertures into the central portion'of the box and thepassage ofthe powder'through the apertures may be expedited by shaking the boxlaterally, vWhen suflicient powder is dis-- posediwithini the central portion of thebox, the member 12 may be rotated to close the apertures 16 in the enclosing Wall 8, as has been stated. 7
Then using the box with the powder disposedin the central portion of-the box, a, powder pufl, or other article or device, may be employed to remove some of the powder from the centralHpo-rtion of the box and, as: the powder pufl, .or other articleor device, is lifted from the box, some powder will drop therefrom and this powder will-fall on the member: 12 at its inwardly converginglsidea the said powder being inthisway prevented. fromfalling on the table, bureau, or the floor. It will be understood that the. box 1:06
' having a base and a peripheral enclosing wall will be enclosed by a cover of any des red construction.
In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figure 4, there is a base 17 from which extends upwardly a peripheral circular enclosing wall 18, the said wall 18 having a flange 19 by which it is secured to the periphery of the base 17, there being an additional member 20 having aflainge 21 engaging the outer side of the wall 18, thesides of the member 20 converging downwardly from the sides of the flange 12 to a point 22, when the member 20 extends downwardly substantially parallel with the wall 18 to form a J! circular enclosing wall 23. In this form 01 the invention the powder will be disposed on the base 17 and within the wall 22 and, when the powder is removed from the box with a powder pull, or other article or device, any
.powder falling therefrom will be deposited on the downwardly converging sides of the member 20, so that the powder will fall with in the box and not on other surfaces.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. A box for powder and similar materials having a base and a peripheral enclosing wall extending upwardly from the base, an-enclosingwall disposed w1th1n the first mentioned wall and spacedtherefrom, the first mentioned wall extending upwardly from the 'base at a distance greater than the distance at which the. second mentioned wall extends above the base, and a member covering the space between the two walls which extends up-' a wardly and'outwardly from the second mentioned wall to the first mentionedwall the member being secured to the second mentioned wall and having a depending flange engag ing-the outer side of the first mentioned wall. 2. A box for powder and similar materials extending upwardly from the base, an enclosing wall disposed within the first men tioned wall and spaced therefrom, the first mentioned wall extending upwardly from the 'base a greater distance than the second mentioned wall, a member movable relatively to the first and second ment1oned walls and covering the space between the said two walls, which extends upwardly and outwardly from the top of the second mentioned wall to the top of the first mentioned wall, and a-wall depending from the member adjacent the second mentioned wall, the second and third mentioned walls having apertures which reglster when the member 1s 1n a predetermined an enclosing circular wall disposed within the first mentioned wall and spaced there'- from, the first mentioned wall extending upwardly from the base a greater distance than the second mentioned wall, a member movable relatively to the first and second mentioned walls and covering the space between the said two walls and which extends upwardly and outwardly from the top of the second mentioned wall to the top of the first mentioned wall, and a circular wall depending from the memberadjacent the second and the first andsecond mentioned walls.
. 4. A box for powder and similar materials having a base and a peripheral circular en-l closing wall extending upwardly from the base, an enclosing circular wall disposed within" the first mentioned wall and spaced therefrom, the first mentioned wall exte'nding upwardly from the base a greater dis-' tan'ce than the second mentioned Wall,- a member rotatable relatively to the first and second mentioned walls, the member having a depending flange at the outer sideof the first mentioned wall anda depending circular wall at the inner side of the second mentioned wall, the second and third mentioned walls having apertures which register when the member is in a predetermined position relatively to the second mentioned wall, the'memher at the end of the third mentioned walls being 'rotatable relatively to the base and the first and second mentioned walls.
