DISPLAY Box Application led January 25, 1930.`v` Serial No.' 423,382f` i This invention relates to display boxes and has for an object to provide an improved construction wherein an article may be readily displayed or covered when desired, the parts being so arranged that the cover may be readily detached so as to be used as a serving tray. v
Another object of the invention is to provide a display box wherein the lid is formed with upstanding apertured members at the ends so that it may be disengageably secured to the bodyof the box when acting as a lid and may be used as a tray when removed from the body.
A further object, more specifically, is to provide a display box with a body for receiving display members, a removable lid and hinged members for not only hingedly mounting the lid but acting as braces for holding the lid in openL position when the articles in the box are on display.
In the accompanying drawing,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display box disclosing an embodiment of the invention, the lid being shown in an open position;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the lid shown in Figure l detached;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary central view through Figure 1 approximately on the line 30 3-3, the same being on an enlarged scale and also showing certain parts broken away for illustrating the hinge formation;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view through the box illustrated in Figure 1 but with the lid shown closed;
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view through Figure 1 approximately on the line 5-5.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates the body of a box, and 2 the lid. The lid 2 is connected to body 1 by hinge structures which consist of a pair of bars 3 and hinged blocks 4. Each block 4 is provided with a pin 5, said pins extending through the respective slots 6 in the respective links or bars 3. The respective links or bars 3 are secured to the end walls of body 1 by suitable means, as for instance, screws 7. The body 1 is provided with a front plate 8 and a rear plate 9, said plates extending a short distance above the side walls 10 ofthe. box. In this way the upstanding side walls 11 of the top 2 may rest on top of the rear wall 10 and be held against sliding forwardly by the plate 9, as shown in Figure. The` end walls 12 of the top 2 are each provide-diff with an enlargement 13 having an aperture k14, the respective apertures accommodating the respective blocks 4 when the lid 2 is in use. By reason of the construction just described the lid 2 may be held in the position shown in Figure 5 when the articles in the y body 1 are being displayed. Whenever desired, the lid 2 may be swung to the left in Figure -until it is closed, and when closed the parts will assume the position shown Figure 4. It will be noted that the end walls 10 are each provided with a depressed portion 15, -said depressed portions 15 being formed to accommodate the raised portion 13, I0 as shown in Figure 4. The apertures 14 in the raised or enlarged portion 13 are of a size Y to receive the lingers of a person whenvthe lid or cover 2 is removed. When the lid or cover is removed it may be used as a tray with the enlarged portion 13y acting as the; handles, as illustrated in Figure 2. VWhen it is to be used as a lid the blocks 4 are tted into the apertures 14, as shown ink Figure 1, and the cover or lid is then held properly in 8c position and allowed to swing back and forth-.,Y
What I claim is 1. A display box', comprising a body having end members formed with notches extending rom the outer edge inwardly and an upstanding member at the front and rear spaced inwardly, and a removable lid having walls, the front and rearV walls itting over the respective front and rear upstanding members of the body, the end walls of said lid having depending portions fitting into said notches, each Aof said end walls having an aperture positioned partly in the depend- V ing portions. v
2. A display box, including a body, a lid .95 formed with enlarged apertured ends and a, hinge structure associated with each end of said lid, each of said hinge structures including a pivotally mounted link having a slot at the free end, a block adapted to fit into onev of the ends of Said 11d, and a, pin extending from said block through said slot.
3. A display box, Comprising a body, a lid and hinge means for connecting the body and the lid, said lid having end members formed With, apertured enlargements, said apertured enlargements presenting handlek members when the lid is detached from thebody, a block removably fitting into-each of theapertures in the end members, -andr'means for sWingably connecting said blocks torlsaid body, said means permitting said blocks to be swung into and out of saidapertures.
