This invention relates to a jar for containing cement, mucilage or the like, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a jar of such class which includes a cover provided with means for connecting therewith a brush for applying the contents of the jar, the latter further being provided with means for removing excessive quantities of the contents of the jar from the brush before the latter is removed from the ar.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more particularly de scribed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing wh rein are shown embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that the description and drawing are to be taken as illustrative and that the invention is intended to be limited only by the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawing in detail, with particular reference to Figures 1 and 2, numeral 1 indie tes a jar of that type which is more particularly described in my co-pending application filed day 5 1930 Serial Number 450,015. The jar as shown includes an externally threaded neck 2 for ned with an outwardly directed flange The jar further includes an inwardly d'rected lip 4 adjacent the lower end of he neck 2, which gradually decreases in diameter in an inward direction and terminates in a relativel thin edge face 5 which is disposed vertically and which is arranged concentrically of the jar l and neck 2.

lower edge of the cover being seated on the upper face of the flange 3. Secured to the inner face of the cover 7 is a web 8 which is of substantially inverted frusto-conical formav tion and which is formed at its upper edge with an outwardly extending flange 9 bearing against the inner face of the cover 7 and fixedly secured thereto. Formed integrally with the lower edge of the web 8 is a substan tially cylindricah internally threaded socket forming member 10, the free upper edge of which is disposed in contacting relation with the inner face of the cover 7. Engaged by the internal threads of the socket forming member 10 is the externally threaded upper end portion of a handle 11 of a brush 12. The handle 11 is provided with a serrated gripping flange 13, the upper face of which bears against the lower end of the web 8 when the upper portion of the handle 11 is threaded into the socket forming member 10. \Vith the handle 11 and cover 7 in assembled relation, and with the cover in position on the jar, the brush 12 is maintained within the lower portion of the jar, normally below the level 7 of the contents 14; of the latter.
referring to Figures 3 and 4 of the drawing, the jar 15 is of the same construction as the 1 xcept that the outwardly directed flange 16 on the neck 17 is formed with a downwardly and outwardly inclined upper face. The neck 17 is formed with a smooth outer surface with the exception of a plurality of spaced, diagonally extending ribs 18, the lower ends of which are spaced from the flange 16.
The jar 15 is provided with a cover 19' which is formed in spaced relation to its lower edge with a plurality of inwardly projecting indentations 20 which are adapted to ride along the lower faces of the ribs 18 to maintain the cover in position on the neck 17'. Secured to the inner face of the cover'l9 is substantially cylindrical socket forming member 21 which is formed at its upper end 9 with outwardly directed'flange 22 bearing against the inner face of the cover 19 and fixedly secured thereto. The socket forming member 21 is formed with internal threads v 23 for engagement with the externally threaded upper end of a brush handle as illustrated in Figure 2.
It is thought that the many advantages of a jar and cover in accordance with this invention will be readily apparent, and although the cover will preferably be constructed in accordance with one of the embodiments herein illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the de tails of construction may be resortedto, so long as such details fall within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended cation, the combination of an impertorate closure member. for positioning in spaced relatlon above and for extension across the mouth of the'jar, an annular collar depending from said member and having aportion thereof provided with means interengaging with'the neck to detachably connect to'the latter the said member in closure position,

In a combined closure and applying element for jars or" that type including a neck and containing adhesive material for appli spect to the neck, a tubular part secured to the inner face of said member centrally of and depending from the latter, said part being threaded, an applying member including a stem having a threaded end, said stem extending into said part and having its threads engaging with the threads of the latter for connecting said members together, and an inverted frusto-conical hollow part encompassing said tubular part, connected at one end to the other end of the latter and having its other end flanged and secured to the inner faceof the closure member.
