'locomotive ireboxes which will lend itself to the smaller sizes of fireboxes in which the comparatively short length thereof would not permit the use of separate water passages or conduitsfor feeding the bottom elements with water without greatly detracting from the combustion space of the fireboX and consequently retarding the economical burning of fuel, oil, or powdered coal, to which type of devices my construction is particularly adaptable.
It is a further object of the invention to make a structure with water carrying elements in which the Water supplying passages are provided at the front ends of the elements by a divisional construction thereof.
It is a further object of my invention to insulate the fire side of the water passages at the front ends of the table elements of a locomotive boiler so that the water passing through the table ends into the table bottoms will be kept relatively cool as compared with the water passing upwardly through the tables subject to and under the influence of the heat of combustion, thereby assuring the conf stant displacement of the lighter water of the tables as subjected to the heat of combustion and containing steam bubbles, by the heavier and cooler ywater passing through the table` ends not subjected to the heat of combustion, and consequently effecting a continuous circulation of Water upward through the tables and legs of the irebox to which the outlets of the tables are attached.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention and wherein Fig. 1 is a centralvertical section of a fireboX with the water bottoms of the invention applied thereto; and

'As shown the device comprises a locomotive reboX 10 having a mud ring 11, side water legs 12, 13, an opening 14 for a fuel injected burner, and a tube sheet 15.
In furtherance of the objects of the invention, there are provided water bottoms 16, 17 having the upper and lower walls thereof oppositely curved as indicated at 18, 19 for connection with the mud ring and with the inner side sheets of the water legs respectively and the invention may be applied to existing boilers by cutting away a portion of the lower edge of the said inner sheets and by electrically welding the margins 19 of the water bottom thereto and securing the margin 18" to the mud ring.
As shown the water bottoms 16, 17 terminate at their lower 'margins in substantially cylindrical portions 20, 21, said portions being formed at each end with flanged fittings 22, 28, which may be .closed by suitable caps which may be provided at one end of the water bottom with washout plugs 24, 25 and with connections as 26 for a blow-oil' fitting. n
As shown the water bottoms terminate short of the ends of the viireboX, the space S thus remaining being shown as closed by suitably supported refractory elements 27 28.
The water bottoms 16, 17 are shown as provided adjacent their front ends with a partition plate 35 extending transversely be- 8 tween the walls of each water bottom and terminating downwardly at the beginning ofthe enlargement of the tubular portion 21 and terminating upwardly substantially iiush with the inner surface of the inside sheets of the firebox. The said partition plates 35 will therefore separate the path of the water flowing into the water bottoms from the corresponding side water legs of the firebox adjacent the front end of the firebox from the path of water flowing from the water bottoms into the side water legs, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1.
To preserve a difference of temperature between the water flowing into the water bottoms from that flowing out ofthem, the refractory lining 27 upon the interior of the front end of the firebox is shown as carried over the upper surface of each of the water bottoms to Va point in the rear of the partition plates 35. There will thus be provided a path for water from. the barrel and the front water leg of the irebox, through the forward portion of the side water legs into the water bottoms at their front ends and downwardly to the tubular portions 21 of the water bottoms, which water will be at lower temperature than that in the water bottoms'and in the remainder of the side water legs resulting in the circulation as indicated by the arrows.
While the invention has been described as provided with a divisional plate 35 to pro# vide a separate passage for water at the front end of the water bottom in combination with the extension of the firebox 27 to cover the fire exposed surface of the water bottom adjacent the front ends at least as far back as the .partition 35, yet it will be obvious that some of the advantages of the invention may be secured omitting said partition, as without said partition the water in the front end of the water bottom would be at a lower temperature than that exposed to the heat in the unprotected portion thereof, and vtherefore circulation will be secured in the nature of that indicated even though the partition 35 be omitted. Furthermore, the use of the partition 35 in a continuous water bottom'to provide a separate passage at its front end is shown for purposes of illustration only. A separate passage at the front end of the water bottom protected by the firebrick may be produced in other structures without departing from the spirit of the invention.
By the provision of the invention water bottoms of the nature disclosed and claimed in my Patent No. 1,663,806 dated March 27, 1928, may be applied to a boiler and circulation therethrough may be maintained without direct communication to the barrel of the boiler or any other portion thereof exce t the side water legs.
n Ithe usual construction of locomotive boilers the water in the lower portion of the side legs of the lirebox has a very sluggish circulation, if any, with the result that the heat and consequent expansion of the various portions of the side sheets are very unequal. VBy the provision of the present invention this defect is removed and the side water legs become a portion of the effective circulatory system of the boiler.
This application is a division of my ap )lication for patent on boilers, Serial Num er 282,162, filed June 1, 1928.
Minor changes may be made in the physical embodiment of the invention Within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A bottom for a firebox having side Water legs comprising, in combination, downwardly and inwardly sloping Water carrying elements closed along one side and both ends and forming extensions of the water legs of the rebox, a refractory lining between the bottom edges of said elements, refractory end walls residing at the front and rear ends respectively of said elements transversely of the firebox, and a refractory covering for the front inner face of each element extending rearwardly of said refractory front end wall.
2. A bottom for 'a firebox having side Water legs comprising, in combination, a watercarrying element comprising a main bod havin a separate passage at an end thereo saidl e ement formed with an edge in open communication With both said main body and passage, the opposite edge of said body formed with a flange having sides and ends for attachment to the edges of an opening in a side sheet of the firebox, the sides of said flange running continuously along an upper opening of both the main bodv and said passage, one end flange bounding the opening in the main body and the other end flange bounding the opening of said passa-ge. 3. A bottom for la firebox having side water legs comprising, in combination, downwardly and inwardly sloping water-carrying elements in circulatory communication with and forming extensions of said side water legs, each of said elements comprising a main body having a passage at its front end in free communication at its lower end with said main body, the inner wall of said main body exposed to heat within the iirebox and refractory means shielding the inner wall of said passage from said heat.
4. A bottom for a firebox having side water legs comprising, in combination, downwardly and inwardly sloping water-carrying elements in circulatory communication with and forming extensions of said side water legs, each of said elements comprising ya hollow body separated by a transverse partition adjacent its forward end into a main chamber and a passage, said passage freely communicating at its lower end with said main chamber, and a refractory shield protecting said passage end from direct influence of heat withinthe firebox.
5. A locomotive boilerr lconstruction embodying therein a. irebox having side sheets, a pair of relatively flat hollow water circulating and steaming elements each closed along one side and both ends and open along the other side which is fixed in 'an associated side sheet so that the element extends downwardly and inwardly therefrom, said open side providing both the inlet and outlet for said element disposed in direct communication with the associated side water leg only of the boiler, and a fluid fuel burner located at one end of said firebox and arranged to direct the flame stream in a direction generally parallel with said elements.
6. A bottom for a iirebox having side water legs comprising, in combination, downwardly and inwardly sloping water carrying elements opening into and forming eX- tensions of the water legs of the irebox, a refractory lining between the bottom edges of said elements, and a refractory covering for the front inner face of each element extending rearwardly from its front end, the opening of each element into its water leg forming the sole inlet and outlet to and from said element.
7. A bottom for a iireboX having side water legs, comprising, in combination, downwardly and inwardly sloping water carrying elements each closed at one side and at each end and opening at the remaining side into a side water leg; said last named side Jforming the sole inlet and outlet for circulatory communication with the water and steam space of the boiler; and mea-ns to cause water to flow downwardly through said open edges rat the front ends of the elements.
8. A bottom for a fireboi; having side water legs, comprising, in combination, downwardly and inwardly sloping water carrying elements each closed at one side and at each end and opening at the remaining side into a side water leg; said last named side forming the sole inlet and outlet for circulatory communication with the water and steam space of the boiler; and means comprising :a separate passage within each element, to
cause water to flow downwardly through said open edges at the front ends of the elements.
