The invention relates to dies or embossing devices designed *particularlyv for the making of automobile plates but useful-mother relations and for a wide variety vof work.` It
35 has for its objects the provision ofan im` proved construction in whichthe die parts are pivoted together, so that thelr relative position is 'positively established, but which permits the dies to approach in parallelism during the actual'stamping operation'. Further objects are; the provision of a con# struction in which the strain imposed onl the pivot is practically negligible, so thatthere is little wear at this point; (-2) which requires no guiding means, aside from -the hinge connection between the die holders; and (3) in which any tendency to impart movement to the plate being stamped in its yown plane is toward the gage or stop means between the dies and pivots, so that the blank is maintained against any displacement incident to the stamping operation. Referring to the drawings, 1 is the bottom die holder in which is removably mounted the die plate 2, and 3 is the top die holder which carries the removable die plate 4. The bottom holder or member is provided with a handle 5 and with a transverse groove 6 which serves to position and hold the dies in the anvil or base in which the pair of die members, in company with a series of others, are mounted. The member 1 is provided' at its rear end with a pair of upstandingflanges 7, 7 between which is pivoted the rear end of the top member 3. When the operating plunger or platen which engages the top of the member movesfdown, carrying the member 3 lfrom the position of Fig. `3 to the final positionrof Fig. 4, the eccentricsleeve turns ina counter 'clockwise direction about the pin 10 from the position of Fig. 3 to that of^Fig. 4. This Vlowerifn g of the center line of the. sleeve permits the top di e to move down maintained in" parallelism with'y the bottom die throughi out the stamping operation, that is, without any tiltingy factionr during such operation.
During the movement of the topdie from'the positioniof Fig. 3'to that of Fig. 4,such die M necessarily moves slightly to the left and back to the right due to the movement of the center line of the sleeve about the center line of the pin l as an axis, but this movement is very limited and has no unfavorable effect either upon the blank or dies. T he Afirst lateral movement to the left does not displace the blank since the end of the blank engages the ends of the flanges 7, 7 which thus act as gage means for positioning the blanks.
The opera-tion as above `described imposes little strain or wear upon the hinge parts Y which in service show no appreciable wear after long periods of use. At the same time the guiding function of the hinge parts obviates the yuse lof guide shoulders or other guide means upon the opposing die members, such as have heretofore been required where hinged dies were associated for approach in parallel planes. rI`he spring 8 is protected from injury, vthe ends of the flanges 7, 7 serving the ydual function of positioning the blanks and protecting vthe spring from such blanks. @ther advantages incident to the cheapness and simplicity of the construction and its positive action will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
What I claim is:
l. In combination in a die construction, a bottom .die member, a top die member, and a hinge Connection at the ends of the mem* bers :comprising a sleeve mounted for oscillation `in one of the members, means for limiting such oscillation, and a pivot pin extending through the `sleeve eceentrically thereof and through the other 'of said members.
2. In combination in a die construction, a bottom die member, a top die member, a hinge connection at the ends of the members comprising a sleeve mounted for oscillation through the other of said members, and a spring between the die members intermediate the `dies and the hinge connection for normally maintaining the `members in separated position.
3. In combination in a die construction, a bottom die member, a top die member, and a hinge connection at the ends of the members comprising a sleeve mounted for oscillation in the top member, means for limiting such oscillation, and a pivot pin extending through the bottom member and through lthe sleeve eccentrieally thereof.
4;. In combination in a die construction, a bottom die member, a top die member, a hinge connection at the ends of the members comprising a sleevemounted for oscillation in the top member, means for limiting such oscillation, and a pivot pin extending through the bottom member and through the sleeve eccentrica-Hy thereof, and a spring between the die members intermediatethe dies and the hinge connection for normally maintaining the members in separated relation.
5. In combination in a die construction, a bottom die member having a. pair of spaced upstanding flanges at its rear end, a bottom die member, a hinge connectionat the ends of the members comprising a sleeve mounted for limited oscillation in the top member, and a pivot pin extending through the sleeve eccentrically thereof and journalled at its ends 'in said flanges, and a spring lying between the members in the space between said flanges and normally maintaining the members in open position, the forward end of said flanges being located so as to act as a gage or stop for :the: plates which are positioned on the bottom Vdie member.
6. In combination in a die construction, a bottom die member, a top die member, vand a hinge connection at the ends of the members comprising a pivot pin mounted inthe lower die member, and .a member pivoted on the pin and also pivoted in the upper die member on' center with respect to said pivot pin, permitting the upper die member to swing about the pivot pin as an axis and also to have an approximate parallel movement with respect to .the lower member when such upper member approaches closed position.
