FRANCIS A. BOUGHNER, OF MUSGATINE, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO LEWIS OOE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,335, datedMarch 13, 1877; application filed November 18, 1876.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS A.BOUGHNER, of Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valua ble Improvement in Wagon-Jacks; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full,
' clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of my wagon-jack, part sectional. Fig. 2 is a front vi w of the standard, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the reversible link.
This invention relates to certain new and 'useful improvements in wagon-jacks; and it consists in the novel construction ofthe standard and base in combination with a peculiarshaped lever and fastening-link.
On the annexed drawings, A represents a broad base, to which is secured standard B and braces G O for said standard. The standard B is slotted at its upper end, so as to allow the head of the lever D to pass through,
and it is provided with downward-bent hooks b b. The lever D is pivoted or bolted to the standard B between the two uprights a a, and is providedwith a peculiar shaped head,
as shown by Fig. 1 of the annexed drawings, and is also provided with a reversible link,-
F, which passes through the handle of said lever. The link can be turned over the.han-' The operation ofa wagon-jack, constructed as described, is as follows: The wagon-jack is placed nearly under the axle of the vehicle;
the lever is then raised up so as to receive the axle in a groove or recess in the head of the lever; the handle is then pressed downward and the vehicle is raised, and the link is then secured to one ofthe hooks.
In lifting a vehicle having .a higher axle it may be necessary to reverse the lever-head. In this-case the lever is turned over the standard, and the link is passed over the handle,
when, by the peculiar shape of the head ot" the lever, a higher axle may be lifted.
To loosen the link it is only necessary to press the lever downward, and the eye 0 will become disengaged from the downward-bent hooks b.
It may be necessary in lifting all wagons to reverse the lever, as the front axle is generally lower than the hind one.
In a wagon-jack of this construction all the parts are secured to each other, and there is no danger of any parts being lost.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wagon-jack the slotted standard B, provided with downward-bent hook b, brace 0 G, and brace A, substantially as described,
and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a wagon-jack the slotted standard B, braces G O, and base A, in combination with lever D and link F,'substantially asdescribed, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a wagoirjack, having standard B and lever D, the link F, made of one piece, and constructed to operate substantially as described. I
4. In a \vagonjack the slotted standard B, made inv one piece, and provided with base A, braces O O, and hooks b, in combination with lever D, having link F attached thereto, said link and lever operating substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence Y of two witnesses.
