IMPALING PIN Original Filed Sept. 27, 1928 gwoemto'o wkyimwoz MM 9% I awn/mu;
Patented Oct. 18, 1932 UNITED STATES HENRY A. WISE WOOD, OF NEW YORK,
N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO WOOD NEWSPAPER MACHINERY CORPORATION, OF N EW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF VIRGINIA IMPALING PIN Original application filed September 27, 1928, Serial No. 308,687. Divided and this application filed July 3, 1931.
This is a division of my application for patent, Serial No. 308,687, filed September 27, 1928.
This invention relates to the impaling pins of a folding cylinder.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a folding cylinder with impaling pins in which, at the moment when the paper is started on its forward side to move in a direction contrary to the direction of rotation of the cylinder, these pins will move a short distance with it, thereby avoiding irregular tearing of the paper and permitting of increasing the speed of the folding couple and to provide a construction in which the lateral movement of the pins is performed with very simple mechanism and they are restored to normal condition automatically and instantaneously.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which 7 Fig. l is an end view of a folding couple showing the folding cylinder in section illustrating a preferred embodiment of this invention;
Fig.2 is a side View of a part of the cylinder, looking in the direction of the arrow 2 in Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
At the moment of folding, the forward edge of the sheet is made to move in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the cylinder. If the pins are left in, just at this instant, large gashes or rips are necessarily left in the forward edge of the paper unless the operator is willing to sacrifice the control of the paper by withdrawing the pins very suddenly.
In order to overcome this difficulty and permit high speeds I give the pins a backward motion, that is, a motion in the direc tion in which the forward edge of the sheet Serial No. 548,648.
starts to travel when being tucked in the folding rolls. During this withdrawing ac- I tion the pins move backwardly with the paper so that they have time to be withdrawn Without pulling through the edge of the paper.
The folding cylinder is provided with the usual folding blades 11, the means for operating them not being shown, as any ordinary means can be used with this invention.
The usual shafts 12 are employed which are turned by a cam, not shown. They are provided with arms 13 which projectinto slots 14 in the impaling pins 15. These pins are mounted to slide in bars 16 which are in turn pivoted to swing on pivot studs 17 located at their rear ends.
It will be seen that, irrespective of the position of the bar 16 about its pivot, the arm 13 can operate the pin in the usual way and that, in the normal position, as shown, the impaling pins project through adjacent to the cutting rubbers.
An arrangement is provided by which an extra stationary cam is employed operating a roll 26 which is on an arm 27 connected with the rod 16 or with the stud 17 on which it is pivoted. This cam is so designed and timed that when the folding blade 11 swings about, it will be just ready to draw back the impaling pins 15. In the position shown this is just about to take place as will be obvious.
This provides a positive control of the pin and permits the use of a slower cam and a higher speed of the press and improves the control of the paper on the folding cylinder. As soon as the pins are withdrawn the cam forces them back into the position shown.
Although I have illustrated and described only one form of the invention I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not Wish to be limited in this respect but What I do claim is 1. The combination with a folding cylinder, of pivoted bars carrier thereby, impaling. pins mounted to reciprocate in said bars, and means in fixed position for swinging the bars backWardly when the paper on the cylinder is being folded.
2. The combination with a folding cylinder, of pivoted bars carrier thereby, impaling pins mounted to reciprocate in said bars, a cam in fixed position and an arm controlled by said cam for swinging backwardly When the paper on the cylinder is being folded.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto aflixed my signature.
