Description

Oct. 4, 1932. vw. w. sYLvEsTER LICENSE PLATE Filed April 14, 1951 Patented Get. 4, 1932 narran stares tasten Partnr ortica WILLIAM W. SYLVESTER, F OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OIF (3HE-HALF .T0 WILLIAM N.. NELSON, 0F BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA LICENSE PLATE Application let April 14,
rll'his invention relates to improvements in license plates and is especially directed to license plates as used on automotive vehicles.
i rllhemain object of the invention is to obn' viate the necessity ofrenewingl license plates tial saving to the various States and permitting the use of the money saved thereby for improving the roads and highways and other maintenance purposes. I
Another object of the invention is to provide license plates of permanent character with changeable year indicating tags wherebythe plate substantially identities the vehicle irrespective ot the time or year.
A. further object of the invention is to provide the changeable year indicatin tag with a facsimile signature or other i entiying indicia in additionto the number indicating the year of issuance.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the following description is read on the'drawing forming a part of this specification.
The invention consists ot a small plate bearing a number signifying the year of issuance and attached to the conventional license plate. v
The invention is adequately illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a license plate wlth my invention' applied thereto Fig. 2 is an elevation of a license plate constructed with a tag receiving pocket into which the year tag may be conveniently inserted;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3*-g3 of` Fig. 2; v F ig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Fig.,5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2; and v Fig. 6 is a section taken on hne 6-6 of similar reference characters indicate identical parts in the several views.
The invention consists of a year tag 10 1931. Serin No. 529,932.
having a number 11 indicating the year of issuance, and a facsimile signature 12 of the oicial authorized to issue the tags. Apertures are provided for reception of bolts 13', the tag being attached to the conventional license plate 15 bearing a serial number 16. This construction permits the use of plates now existent.
A special form of license plate 14 adapted to my invention where new license plates are .issued is indicated in Fig. 2, in which a pocket 17 is formed in the plate by searing the 'plate along the lines 18, 19 and 20, and forming the pocket 17 vby depression, leaving the ianges 21 and 22 level with the surface of the plate, the depressed portion being indicated at 23. The corners 24 are depressed to receive the ,corners of the tag 10 which is inserted Jfrom the back through the opening 25 formed by the upper slit 22. The portion 23 is .preferably arcuately formed as shown in Fig. 3 adjacent the upper slit 22 so as to form resilient locking means to partially close the slot and prevent withdrawal of the tag 10 except by, pressing back on this portion.
1t will be noted that variations in construction and arrangement of parts which are consistent with the appended claims may be resorted to without detracting from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacricing any ot the advantages thereof. l
li claim: o
1. A license plate having a pocket formed therein by slitting to form flanges on the sides and bottom and a slot at the top, the pocket being formed by depression of the material between the slits and being arcuately formed adjacent the slot for partially closing said slot.
CeIlSe ina-f plates comprising a pocket formed by depressing a portion of said plate to form a back, slitting along the upper edge of said de-v pressed portion to form a slot, forming slits along the sides and bottom to leave flanges in a-plane with said license plate,- said back being arcuately formed to normally partially close said slot. y
' 4. A supplementary tag holder for license plates comprising a pocket having a pack formed by depression of a portion of said plate, flanges at the sides and bottom in a` plane with the surface of said plate, a slot at the top of said depressed portion and extending throughout the length thereof, said back being arcuately formed and adapted to partially close said slot to prevent Withdrawal of said tag.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
WILLIAM W. SYLVESTER.
