PHONQGRAIPH nnconn Application filed July 24,
The presentinvention relates broadly to phonograph records and more especially to a record table pin opening structure therefor.
The present invention has todo primarily with flexible phonograph records and more especially a phonograph record having a body of paper of substantially card board thick- 7 phonograph table'the friction of the record" on the pin flattens the convexity of the record and holds the same flat'onthe-record table of the-phonograph. Where the sides' of the opening in the body of the paper arerelied upon to.- provide friction with the pin, the use of the record tends-to enlarge the opening and a condition may arise wherein the opening is enlarged to such a point that friction no longer can be relied upon to hold the record in place.
:The present invention overcomes the difi culties of'the known art byproviding an elas tic zone around the pin opening so that fric-' tionwith the pin is maintained without substantial wear on the sides of the opening when the record is placed upon and taken off from the'pin. The preferred form of the invention comprises providing resilient rubber memher securel located in place in the center of' therecord" with the pin opening being provided in 'the rubber'member. Since the recordsar'e relatively thin, it is desirable to supportthe' rubber center in place by supporting means which 'may comprise suitable thin clamping members of metal or other relativelystifl' material.
Other features and objects of the present invention-will in part be obvious and will in part be pointed out in the specification hereinafter following in which the preferred forms of the invention are disclosed. It is center member 5 is located in an o 1830. Serial No. 470,385.
Fig. 6 illustrates a further modification of I the invention.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view online 7-7 of Fig. '6.
Referring-now more especially to Figs. 1, 2 and 3,:which illustrate a phonograph record 1 having a paper base with a surface coat ing 2 carrying the record grooves 4, this rec,- ord is slightly convex on the face side, as illustrated in Fig. 1 and is intended to be sufficiently flexible to lie flat on aphonograph table when properly placed thereon.
The center member 5 is preferably formed of elastic resilient rubber with sufiicient stability to slightly resist compression. This formed in the record 1 and is held in p ace by a top ring 6 which may be formed of sheet metal, such as brass. This top ring 6 is provided with lugs 7 which pass through the record body and are clinched on the back of the record to enclose and support a bottom ring 8. Preferably the rings 6 and 8 slightly compress the edges of the. rubber center member and thereby tightly clamp the rubber member in position in the center of the phonographdisc. This rubber member is providf ed with a pin opening 9 adapted to receive the-center pin of a phonograph record table,
asis well known in the art. Preferably the pin opening 9 is slightly smaller than the standard size record table pin so that there is a slight compression of the center member when the record is forced in place over the pin. In order to further facilitate the functioning of the elasticcenter member 5, the rubber member may be provided with slits or slots 10.

ted.
Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate a slight modification of the device, which modification relates more especially to the holding members, and in Figs. 4 and 5, the center elastic member? is held in place by annular ring-like members comprising a top ring 11 and a bottom ring 12. The top ring is formed with lugs'14 cut from material of the top ring -and leaving openingsrl f in the top ring. These legs 14 pass through"v openings in the bottom ring 12 and preferably are so located as to pass through the enlarged openings in the-record in which the center member 5 is located. The lugs 14 are suitably bent over the b'ottomring 12to clamp boththe body of the' record and th e cen'ter members tightlyjbetween the top and-bottom rings", thereby securely anchoringthe center rubberlrnember in the record.
In this form the center'member is shown as continuo fFi-gs. 5 and GiIhistratea' 'further modification of the present invention in which a no berj center member is located in an opening in the c'eiit'er of the record and this rubbe'r member comprises top edges 21 andbottom edges l22which e'xtend over the body of the record. These edges 21 and 22 may be relied'u'p on" to hold the center '5 in pla.ce',a l-
though where desired these edges may be se-' z-ciirely-at'tachedto the record body by cement or iotherattaching medium. The center of this .inember "20 3s provided with a record table ia opening' 24 adapted-to receive the pinffron i alir'ecord table?" Inf alltheiornis'of the present invention the pin opening is provided withan elastic -memberwhich yields when therecord' is placedover therecord'tablepin and which is sufficiently 'rigidto withstand any tendency of the record to slip upwardly on the pin. At
V the same time the elasticity of the central member'rn-ilitatesagainst wear and grips the center piin' 'so as toassist in causing the rotaaction ofthe record'with the table *to' properly claim r v,
