' 2 Claims.
This invention relates to phonograph records and to a package therefor by means of which the record is handled, may be sent through the mail and may be applied to a phonograph turnable for playing purposes. An object of the invention is to provide a protecting enclosure for a light sheet record which may be used as a mailing envelope and which is also used to provide friction for holding the record on a turntable of a phonograph in fixed relation to the turntable. Another object of the invention is to provide means for interlocking a light sheet phonograph record to a paper holder so that the record. is maintained in a predetermined position in the holder, and another object of the invention is to provide a light sheet and inexpensive phonograph record with a relatively inexpensive cover or package that can be used for advertising purposes.
These and other objects of the invention will be understood from the following specification and the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 shows a form of sheet record applied to a package in the open position;
Fig. 2 is a back view of the package shown in Fig. l in the closed position,
Fig. 3 is a section on line 88 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 shows a modified form of package in the open position for a record.
Phonograph records for advertising and similar purposes have been made from thin sheets.
of cellulose acetate, which are transparent and upon which the sound grooves are impressed in the usual way. These sheets do not have sufficient body to be used alone and it has been common practice to mount them by an adhesive upon a stiff base. In the present invention the thin sheet record is placed within a paper envelope or package and is kept in this package throughout its life. For this purpose a portion of the package is removable or tearable from the side which covers the sound grooves and thereby makes these grooves accessible for play- The record is provided with the usual aperture in the center of the sound grooves for placing upon the stem of the turntable and the package has corresponding apertures so that both package and record are placed on the turntable together.
It is necessary to locate the record within the package in such a way that there will be relatively little free movement between the record and the package and when assembled the aperture for the stem in the record and in the package will register.
The package is preferably made from a sheet of strong paper which folds over to enclose the record and slits are provided on the base or back sheet which are engaged by tabs formed on the record, or formed on the cover sheet, to lock the parts together, and this locking arrangement may be used for securing the whole assembly, or it may be used in combination with 1 an adhesive to hold the device in the assembled position.
Since the package is made from paper stock it can be printed and illustrated with advertising matter and the portion of the paper stock below fit the sound grooves can also be used for illustrative matter as the record itself is transparent. In this way the package conveys a, Written advertising message and in addition to this it may be used to convey a spoken message of the same order.
'In the drawing, II is the record which is provided with the usual sound grooves l2 and with the central aperture at [3 for the stem of the turntable. The record may be made from square sheets of a transparent, thermo-plastic material, such as cellulose acetate, as indicated at M.
In the construction shown in the drawing the record II and the base of the package is each provided with registering slots at 3| and 32 and the cover 22 is folded over with the tab 33 inserted in the slot 3| and the tab 34 inserted in the slot 32 and with the aperture 24 registering with l3 for the turntable stem. The tabs may be formed to engage the slots with a locking engagement. The closed position of the package is shown in Fig. 2 which is suitable for mailing. Before the cover 22 is secured in place, the edges 35, 35 and 31 are folded inwards on the dotted line to protect the edges of the record.
The construction in Fig. 4 uses the square 'form of record without any preparation which is inserted at the corners below the corner plates 4| which may be folded over from the stock of the base 21. These plates are provided with an adhesive on the outer surface which engages the cover 22 and secures the package.
In assembling, the side of the record with the sound grooves thereon is placed adjacent the side of the cover having the tear-out 26 and the tabs are preferably projected through the bottom side of the package so that in addition to the friction of the package engaging the turntable the tabs also engage the turntable and assure the unitary movement of the record and turntable without slippage. The interlocking secured between the record and the package by means of the tabs maintains the record in proper position relative to the package and forms a comparatively inexpensive method of manufacturing the device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a phonograph record and package therefor, a thin sheet record with sound grooves on one side thereof and having a central aperture for the stem of a turntable, a package enclosing said record made from a base sheet having a plurality of slits therein and a central aperture to fit the stem of the turntable, slits in said record registering with the slits in said base sheet,
a cover sheet secured to said base sheet for enclosing the record and having a removable section opposite the sound grooves of the record and tabs projecting from said cover sheet for inserting in said slits to hold the central aperon and having a central aperture for the stem of a turntable, a package enclosing said record made from a'base sheet and a cover sheet secured at one side to the base sheet with a central aperture to fit the stem of the turntable, said basesheet having a plurality of slits therein and said record having slits to match the slits in the base sheet and tabs projecting from said cover sheet engaging the slits in the base sheet and in the record to hold the record in place and to hold the cover sheet in the closed position and a portion of said package opposite the sound grooves of the record being removable to enable the record to be played without removing it from the package.
