Description
Oct. 4, 1932. A. czoP DETACHABLE BUTTON Filed April 25, 1930 Patented Oct. 4, 1932 UNITED STATES ANDY CZOP, OF ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA D'ETACHABLE BUTTON Application filed April 23, 1930.- Serial No. 446,581.
This invention relates to fasteners and has special reference to a button like fastener having parts readily applied to and removed from pieces of cloth, leather or the like which are to be buttoned together to connect them and unbuttoned to permit their separation.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of such a fastener having the parts to be joined arranged for screw connection.
A second important object of the invention wherein the button parts proper may be removed from the materials to be joined by simply unscrewing certain of the elements.
A third important object of the invention is the provision of a novel eyelet or grommet arrangement for protecting the cloth or other material around the fastener.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a dis-assembled face view of the two button parts in one form as applied to the material to be connected;
Figure 2 is a face view showing the button with the two pieces of material in joined relation;
v Figure 3 is a rear face view of one part of the button;
on the line 66 of Figure 11 is an inner face view of the other part of said modification;
Figure 12 is a section on the line 1212 of Figure 8;
Figure 13 is a section on the line 1313 of Figure 8;
Figure 14 is a section on the line 1414 of Figure 9.
The first form of the invention is shown as applied to two pieces of material 10 and 11. The piece 10 is provided with a suitable opening surrounded by an eyelet or grommet which includes a ring 12 L-shaped in cross section and having one leg of the .L pressed into the material adjacent said opening. Passing through the opening is a' tubular member 13 having a flange 14 which bears against the piece 10 on the side opposite the ring 12 and also having a flange 15 which laps the ringl2 so that the tube is securely held in the material 10.
J ournalled in the tube 13 is a tubular central or middle button part 16 provided at one end with a flange 17 which rests against the flange 14 and holds the part against pulling through the grommet in one direction. The other end of this tube is externally threaded and carries a cap 18 which closes this end and holds the tubular middle part in the opposite direction. The threaded connection between the tube 16 and cap 18 is such that, with the cap screwed on as far as it will go, the tube 16 will turn freely in the grommet.
The piece 11 is also provided with a tubular button part 19 which is of proper size so that one end can be threaded and screwed into the internally threaded end of the part 16. Plates 20 and 21, the latter having projecting prongs 22 engaging the material surround this member 19 on opposite sides of the piece 11. A keeper ring 23 is screwed onto the end of the member 19 at the end opposite the member 16 and thus holds the member 19 from drawing out of the material upon the two parts 16 and 19 being screwed together as shown in Figure 7.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figures 8 to 14 there is also disclosed two pieces of material 24 and 25. One of these pieces carries a tubular button part 26 having a flared end 27 forming a head. A shoulder 28 formed under this head and rests on a plate or washer 29 which in turn rests on one face of the piece 2 1. Bearing on the other face of this piece is aflange 30 formed integrally with the tube 26 and beyond this flange the tube is prolonged in a reduced and threaded end 31. The remaining member in this form has a tubular body 32 provided with an internally threaded por-' tion to receive the :threaded end '31. A washer plate 33 is provided on one face of the piece 25 and flanges .34 formed integrally on the piece 32 bear against the washer plate and the other face of the piece 25 to hold this member of the button tothe material.
In either case it is merely necessaryto screw the two button memberstogether to hold the two pieces of material "together "or to unscrew said button members to permit separation of these pieces.
Having thus described the vinvention what is claimed is A separable button consisting of two separable members, one ofwhich comprises a ring ofL-shape in cross-section formed with a single inwardly directed flange, a tubular member of approximately vU-shape in cross section, embracing the flange of said L-sha-ped ring, said ring and tubular member being constructedand arranged to be inserted in a button hole and to engage with and compress the cloth between "them, a second tubular member journalled in the aforesaid tubular member andhaving an end flange abutting one end of the first named tubular member and a capengaged with the other end of the second tubular member and abutting the first named tubular member to confine the two tubular members in assembled relation.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
