Application filed April 29, 1930, Serial No. 448,312. Renewed February 27., 1932.v
The present invention relates to fence posts and more particularly to a temporary fence post which may be securely positioned in the ground and removed therefrom when desired.
An object of this invention is to provide a fence post of this character which may be inserted in the ground and upon which a screen wire or fence Wire may be removably secured.
Another object of this invention is to provide a fence post having outstanding flanges or fins at the lower end thereof so as to limit the insertion of the post in the ground.
A further object of this invention is to provide in combination with a removable fence post, means for pulling the post out of the ground.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a detail front elevation of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; K
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a detail side elevation of the jack member; and
Fi Cure 5 is a fragmentary side elevation of the forked lever.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the nu-V meral 10 designates generally a fence post constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention, the post 10 being constructed of metal and being preferably substantially U shaped in cross section and having a pointed lower end 11 which is adapted to be inserted into the ground. The point 11 is formed integrally with the front face 12 of the post and a driving head or cap 13 is positioned on the upper end of the post, the driving head being adapted to protect the upper end of the post while it is being driven into the ground. v
The post 10 is provided with a pair of 'horizontally disposed wings or stop members 14. which are secured to the post and formedl integrally therewith at a. point spaced upwardly from the lower end thereof, the fins or wings 14 being adapted to limit the insertion of the point 11 into the ground. The wings 14`may be formed integrally with the opposite sides 15 of the post and may be ofl any desired length which is sufficient to limitv the insertion-of the post in the ground.
"-A Wire holding plate 16 is secured to the fro-nt face 12 of the post by meansof bolts, rivets or the like 17 and the wire securing plate 16 is provided' with a plurality of outstanding lugs or arms 18 which are providedV with aligned apertures 19 for'removably re-V ceiving a wire locking pin 20 for removably securing a wire 21 upon the outstanding lugs 1'8. The lugs' 18 are adapted to extend through the mesh of the wire 21 and the flock# ing bar 20 may be provided with a handle orv looped upper end portion 22 so las to facilitateremoval of the bar from'the lugs 18.
The fence post disclosed herein has been particularly designed for holding a wire screen which' is adapted -to be temporarily placed atrthe desired point for temporarily enclosing a section of ground, and when it is desired to remove the post from the ground, a stepped jack 23 may be placed against the post 10 and a forked lever 24 positioned on one of the stepped portions of the jack 23 and therforked portions of the lever inserted beneath the outstanding arms 14 of the post whereupon the lever may be rocked upon the jack and the post pulled out of the ground.
In the use of this device, the post 10 may be driven into the ground in the conventional manner and when it has been inserted to the point Where the outstanding arms 14 engage the ground, a wire 21 of suitable construction may be positioned on the outstanding lugs 18 of the elongated plate 16, and the securing bar 20 positioned in the aligned apertures 19, it of course being understood that the apertures 19 are positioned at a point spaced outwardly from the outer surface of loo Y the plate 16 and so positioned that When the securing bar 2O is inserted in the apertures 19, the Wire 2l Will be firmly held upon the lugs 18.
It Will, therefore, be obvious from the fore= going that an exceedingly convenient tem-A porary post has been devised byv means of Which thewire may be-removablypositioned upon the post Without injuring the Wire or injuring the post7 and when it is desired to remove or pull the post out offthe ground ltli'e M post may be readily removed by means of the tool in the form of the forked lever andthe stepped jackwhich khave also been disclosed Y Vhile the Wire holding members 18 have beenl disclosed asformed integrally4 With thef plate lo,` it is Wire holding of course understood .that-the- 'members may be formed integrally-.With the outer-,face 1210i `the post l0`A `.by means. of pressing portioI-isoiitheppsti outwardly and Wherefthis is done the plate; member 16 may, ot course, beeliminated` ItWillff ofcourse, ,bevunderstood that va rious changes 1nv the details and modifications may be made ofconstructiongand Y, design of.
