, This invention relates to guardsi'for presses and particularly power presses, stamps, hammers and the like machines of the type in which the guard member isadapted to move .5 outward towards the operative engaged in feeding the machineiso that in the event of the operative not removing his hands at'the appropriate timefrom the danger zone the guard member will operate to force them Inguards-of this kind theguard member hashitherto been arranged to be operated by some moving partof the machine and in such manner that the same degree of motion'is im- {:1 parted 'to' it whether or'not an obstruction,
for instance-the hands of the-operative, is in the path of its motion, with-theresult that the I guard member if associated with ajquick acting machine is subjected to considerable L2?! stresses,
According to thepresent inventionaguard member of the kind in question is associated with means adapted to, constrain it toimove, in setting. the pressor -the-like in motion,

Inone constructlon'in accordancezwlththe invention the pedal'by which the press or like machine is set in motion is connected by i and the guard member normally ,infengagement to cause the guard member to force any obstructionv to its motion; away fromthe danger zone ofthe machine,-the said driving tion,
construction in accordance with and 5, while v I "bers 8 connected together by bars '9; adapted" engaged and a driving connection -is providedbetween some moving'part of the press connection =;being interrupted only the rofqthe pedal;
"The invention Will be described further in detail and by Way of example'withreierence to the accompanying drawingsin Which:-
Figure l is a frontelevation-of'one construction showing the guardinthe open posi- Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof, and Figure 3 is .a 'furtheroside elevation. v :Figure 4 is a side elevation? of .a further the. invention, i I Figure 5 ,is a frontelevation of the contstruction' illustratedlin Figure 513' v Figure :6 illustrates the normal operation of the construction illustrated in Figures ,Figure 7 illustrates :the operation thereof when opposition to its operation is encountered. Y p I.
In the constructions illustrated,..the guard. member comprises a'mainframe,a shaft 1 pivotally secured through thebracket-lugs 2 to the body of the press 3 -.and'.incl uding i .side members 4 extending in a downward direction from the "shaft and connected by bars5; r
Adjacent to their lower extremities andin the vicinity-of 'thegap 6 'o'f'the press to et-he main frame is pivotally connectedby the bar-7 a second frame comprising side "memwhen-the sidegmembers of thetvvo frames are i substantially in-register, to preclude access to the gap ofthe press. In theconstruction 'il-' lustrated in Figure 3,'to'th'e secondframe is connected aleverIQpivotally connected with r a rod ll'havingiat its upper extremityla connection "12 adaptedtopermit acertaini degree of lost motion'between the rod' ll and the lever'l3. The lever 13 'is c'ormed vv'ith a recess ing device 36 of the press.
19, mouuted on pivot 29 about which it is adapted to rock in opposition to the spring '21. Also mounted on the pivot is the cam lever 22 connected with the rod 23 the forward end 24 of which bears against the;
first mentioned guard frame, the cam lever being caused to move about its pivotal connection with the body ofthe press by the action of the peda lever 25, pivoted at 26 constrained against the spring 27 an d connected at QSwit-h the rod 29oonnected to the lever 30 provided with a roller 31 bearing against the cam lever and-pivoted at 32 with'the lever19, andat 33 with the rod 34- con'nected through the lost motion connectiou 35 with the clutch actuat- In operating the press the pedal lever 25 is depressed, and the main guard frame (see dotted position in Figure 2) is pushedoutward to a'degree which will constrain the seeone guard frame to pos1t1on.,
Should the guardmember be permi move into the safe ted to V assume the F safe posit-ionthe motion of the rod 11 connecting the second frame with the [lever 13 will release the recess 14 in t I I I u from engagement with the eccentric pin 10, {and continue depression of the pedallever to cause the clutch of the press to beengaged will not result in further motion being mhe lever parted to the guard member.
1* If, on the other hand, an obstruction prevents the second ,frame 'from assuming the normal safe posit-ion, the recess 14: in the lever 13 will'not bereleased from engagement with the eccentric pin 15, and-both the main guard frame and the second guard frame will be caused to move outward consequent on the zm'oticn of the eccentric pin 15 to the extreme right hand position shown dotted in Figure 3 and the secondframewill be causedto move outward while the roller 31 bearing upon the cam. lever 22 associated with the second frame will constrain it to grip the hand or other obstruction to its: motiouunder the f action. of the spring 21.
In the constructionillustrated in igures 5,6 and 7, the second frame is pivotally 0on D tected at 37 with the lever 38 to the upper portion of'which is pivotally connected at 39 one end of-a link 40, the other end of which is pivotally' connected at with the main frame 4.
ns7aes3 Also pivotally connected at 39 with the lever 38 is one end of the link l2provided adjacent to its other end with a lot 43 adapted to engage a pin l4: in the lever 45 coaxially mounted on the shaft 1 with the main frame.
The lever 45 is provided with a cam faced projection 46 adapted to engage and be disengaged from contact with the end 47 of the lever 38 and is pivotally connected by means of the clamp 18 with a push rod 49 engaging at its end 50 the pin 51" eccentric-ally mounted on theoperating shaft 16. i In' theoperationof the guard the main frame is constrained to move against the action of the spring 52 connected at 53 with a stationary part of the machine and at 54 withthe main frame.
For regulating the position of the main frame 'with respect ,to the body of the press,
c an adjustable stop is provided comprising a bracket 55 and an adjustment screw 56,0ne end'of which is adapted to bear against the upper portion of the main frame. 1
' The operation of this construction will be understood by reference more particularly to Figures 6 and 7. Figure 4 illustrates the position in which the danger zone of the machine is exposed and in the event of there being no opposition to movement of the second frame, rotation. of the operating shaft 16 will, by actuation of the push rod 49, cause the lever 45 tobe depressed audthe cam faced projection 46 to exertpressure upon the end 47 of the lever '38 thereby depressing it and causing the second frame to be rotated into the normal safe position, illustrated in Figure 6. In this'position the camfaced projection 46 is disengaged from the end 47 of the-lever 38. Should resistance to motion of the second frame be encountered (see Figure 7 such refsi'stancewill preclude the disengagement of the cam-faced'projection and further rotation of the shaft 16 will cause thrust to be transmitted through the link 40' to the main frame 4 thereby moving the latter away from the-body of the machine in opposition to the spring 52 and removing the obstruction from thedanger zone. 1 r i 5 v .The above description is furnished for the purpose of describing thenature of the invention and while certain constructions in ac- -cordance with the invention have been particularly described by way of example various-changes may be made in the constructional arrangements and details without exceeding the scope of the invention.
