Description

Sept. 20, 1932. R. P. PERKINS CLOSURE Filed Aug. 28. 1930 lPatented Sept. 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT? y OFFICE Animation med Angus as, mso. smal no. 478,472.
The present invention relates to an improved form of closure particularly adaptable to be used on tubes such as that used for tooth paste and the like. However, it is to be understood that this invention is not limited to this particular use, but may be used whereever it is found that a closure or valve of this structure is particularly adaptable to use.'
The particular object of the invention is to provide a closure of a very practical and simplified form of design and of a structure that will enable the closure to be opened without the removal of the cap portion of the structure, thus preventing the misplacement or loss of the cap when the same is set aside after having been removed from the well known type of closure as used on tooth paste tubes and which is more 'or less the universal structure of tube closure as used today.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a closure of the type heretofore described having positive mechanical `means for opening and closing the same by merely turning` the cap portion of the closure a fraction of a turn.
-Still another object of the present invention is to provide a closure of the type described heretofore having in addition to the present type of tube closure structure, i. e., an internal threaded member and an external threaded member or cap that is engaged thereto, that of a single fiat disc-shaped mem- 'ber that will enable this type of standard closure structure to be adaptable to be formed into a closure that may be opened and closed in a positive mechanical manner with a true sealing effect by merely turning the outer cap portion of the closure a fraction of a turn and without the removal of the same.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated my invention and the various features of the same in its preferred form.
In the drawing: q
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of the invention of closure taken on the line 1-1 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the closure shown in closed position.
Figure 3 is a similar fragmentary view as direction as indicated b the arrow 19, Figthat disclosed in Figure 2 except that the closure is shown in opened position.
Figure 4 is a side elevation or outside view of the closure structure.
Figure 5 is a fra entary sectional view 56 on the line 5-5 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows and illustrating the slot structure and the internal member that engages the same for purposes of preventing any disalignment of the openings in the closure when the same is turned to opened position.
In the drawing and the various views which form the same similar reference numerals represent similar parts throughout the various figures. The invention of closure in its preferred form with particular reference to Figure 1 consists of an outer cap-shaped member 1, the inner portion of which is threaded at 2, said threaded'portion being 70 adapted to be threadedly engaged to the. threaded portion 3 of the internal threaded extension 4. This threaded or internal member 4 has an opening therein as indicated at 5, this opening is closed at the to as shown at 6 except for the small opening 1n the same as indicated at 7. Interposed between the under surface 8 of the upper portion of the cap member 1 and the upper surface 9 of the closed portion 6 of the internal threaded member 4 is a disc-shaped member 10 having an opening therein 11 and a de ending projection 12 which depends from t e under side 14 of the disc-shaped member 10 and which engages the slotted ortion 15 formed in the 8i closed portion 6 o the internal threaded member 4. The disc-shaped member 10 also has formed therein a se en'tal cutawa portion 16 which is engage by the projection 17 formed on the cap member 1, (see particularly Figures 2 and 3). The cap member 1 has an opening thereinas indicated at 18, thus when it is desired to turn the closure to open position the cap member 1 is turned in the ure 2, for a fractin o a turn or until the opening 18 of the cap memberl registers with the opening 7- in the closed portion 6 of the internal threaded member 4. To prevent the turning of the opening 18 past the l of registering'the openings 18 and 7 the disc:
shaped member -10 and its opening 11 is caused to move also in the direction as indicated by the'arrow 19 until 'the openin 11' registers with-,the openings 7 and 18. or purposes of-ca'u'sing the `o ening 11 to move -in 'a direction of the opening 7 the cap member 1 is provided with a projection 17 which engages withthe shoulder" 20 formed by the inwardly disposed. segmental notched portion 16 thus causing the disc opening 11 after the opening 18 hais become aligned therewith to move forward and together, i. e., openings 18 and 11,`until both of these openings are in proper alignment with the opening 7. For purposes of preventing any disalignment of the opening 11 with the openings 7 and 18 when the same is moved to open position and also to cause thisY opening 11 to move back again to 'itsA original desired closed disaligned position as indicated in Figure 2 and 'which partial iinoperativeness may be caused by an sticky substance such as tooth paste or the li e 'adhering between the various surfaces which turn-to makeup the closure, the same is provided'with the depending member -cutaway portion so that simultaneous movement of said external member will align said openings of each o said members and disc so that Athe contents ofthe closure may be removed.
Signed b me at Baltimore, Maryland, this 16th day o August, 1930.
RODY P. PERKINS.
12 (see particularly Figure 5). This member 12 engages the slot -l'formed in the stationary portion of the closure structure or ,closed portion 6 of the internal threaded member 4, thus it may be readily seen that as 'the disc is moved in a'forward direction or Athe direction of the arrow 19 for purposes of opening the closure the disc member 10 and its opening 11 are prevented from moving ast its aligned position with the opening due to the*- depending member 12 striking the closed portion 21 of the slot 15. By reversing the. action when it is desired to close the closure the depending member 12 moves `backward'to the position as shown in Figure 2, thus aperfected and positive mechanical ,means isprovided for opening and closings. closure of the `t pe heretofore described.
I have thus escribed my invention in its referred vform. However, the terms used erein are not to be constred'in'ther limit- .ing sense but the scope of the invention is to be 'defined in the claim.`
What =.I claim and desire to secureby Let- U A` closure ofthe class described, having .an internal member:L and an external member threadedly` engaged, a 'disc-shaped member
