UNITED STATES PATENT IMPROVEMENT mmmcA'roRs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,823, dated February 27, 1877; application filed January 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES C. CURTISS and JAMES CURTIS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Indicator, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view, and Fig. 2 a vertical central section, of my improved office-dial, taken on line :10 aaFig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish for office-doors, or the bulletin-boards in the lower halls or stair-ways, an improved dial, on which a businessman, upon leaving his cffice, may
indicate with great facility whether he is in 'or out, or that he is out and back at a certain time; and the invention consistsofa base-dial, with the hours and the words In, Out, Back at marked thereon, on which, Within the outer circumference, a second partlyrecessed plate or disk isguided, and above the same one or two index-hands for indicating the time, the recessed plate and hands being returned by a face-plate or disk.
In the drawing, A represents the base-dial, that is attached either by two or more screws passing through suitable holes to the office door, or to the bulletin-board in the lower hall or stairway, or secured to the door by a center-bolt passing through the door and'being retained at the inside by a fastening-nut. The dial-plate A is marked along the circumference like a watch-dial, with the numbers from 1 to 12, the part within the numbers being recessed to guide therein a disk-plate, B, turning on the fixed center pivot or bolt. The disk-plate B is recessed along part of its circumference to admit, when properly set, the reading off of the words In, or Out, or Out, back at, marked on the dial-plate A. The disk-plate B may be moved by means of a projecting pin, serving as handle, or, when at some height, by means of a pointed or hooked rod, engaging-holesor pegs of the disk-plate. The distance to which the disk B may be moved in either direction, so as to exhibit the desired words in proper manner, maybe controlled by a pin projecting from the under side of disk B, and moving in a guide-slot of the disk-plate, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. One or two hands, C, turn by perforated and diskshaped ends on the center pivot or bolt, and are readily set along the dial-plate to any time at which the business-man intends to return.
They may be set in similar manner as the disk B by a rod when applied out of reach on a bulletin-board. A top or face plate, D, retains the movable diskplate and hands C, and binds on the same, so that they do not play loose.
The face-plate may be finished in suitablp ornamental manner with nu mber of room, busi ness-name, &c.,' marked thereon, and is attached to the center pivot of the dial-plate by a fastening-screw, a, or by means of a fixed bolt passing through the diskand dial plates and door, being fastened to the latter in the manner before described.
By properlysetting the disk-plate and hands on the dial plate, the same indicate, in a convenient manner, whether the person is in or out, and when the same will be back, so as to provide a cheap, durable, and readily-set device for office and business purposes.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent i An office-dial, composed of a base dial-plate, A, attached to door or bulletin-board of a partly-recessed and movable disk-plate, B, of one or more hands, C, and of a binding top or faceplate, D, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES oouariss. JAMES CURTIS.
