Be it known that LWILLIAM B. CARPENTER,
a citizen ol' the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the countyol Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Counters or Indicators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in counters or devices for indicating the number of points made during the progress of a game, and also for indicating the number of games, the object being to produce a device of this character which shall be simple and inexpensive, of l'ew parts, and which shall present a neat and finished appearance; and with these ends in view my invention consists in certain novel features ol' construction, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
ln thc accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view ol' the front face of my improved counter. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side, with the rear side or portion of the casing removed. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the registering-disks removed, showing the inner surface of the front portion of the casing, and Fig. 4l is a sectional view taken on the line .t x of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the casing of the counter, constructed of two sections, a I), and formed of celluloid and molded into proper form, each of the sections being provided on its edge with the flange c, widened at the points d for the reception of screws. The front section, a, is provided with two circular openings, d c, to expose a number on each ofl the revolving disks C D, the word Points 7 being molded in the Celluloid below the opening d, and below the opening e the word Games. On the rear side of this section c is molded, in one piece with the section, the post It, located between the openings d e and in line with said post, and between the same and the ends of the section are molded, integral with. the case, the posts or bearings i 7l, on which are journaled the two revolving disks C D, the front faces of which, near their outer edges, bear a series of numbers, letters, or figures, as many as are desirable. These letters or numbers are so situated on the disks 5o that when the latter are revolved one of such numbers or letters on each disk will register with the openings d c, formed in the section a and exposed thereby. These disks are of such size that when placed in proper position on their bearings a portion of their peripheries will extendV ont beyond the edge of the casing, the flange c being cut away at those points for that purpose. The edges of the disks are milled in order that when it is desired to re volve thesame the fingers willnotslip thereon. 6o
The post h is provided with a slit, Z, into which is fitted a spring, E, bent into the form shown, the outer ends of which bear on the ratchet-wheels F, formed on the rear faces of the disks O D, the number of the teeth con forming to the numbers of the letters or numbers of the disks. 3y virtue of the form of the teeth on the ratchet-wheels it will be noticed the disks can be revolved but in one direction, (indicated bythe arrows) and thel tension o'l'the 7o spring being such as to prevent the disks from accidentally turning. At the two lower corners are located the screws m,which are passed through the section a into the section b, and one at the upper edge about midway between the ends, which serve to hold the two sections together. llo aid in keeping the sections inA their proper relative positions, I form on the ,two upper corners of the section c the small pins or projections'71adapted to llt in the holes So or recesses formed at the corresponding corners of the section Z.
In use, in order to keep score of the points of the games or the number of games, it is simply necessary to place the linger on the milled edge of therespectivedisk which extends outbcyond the casing and slightly turn it until the number of the disk corresponding to the number ofpoints or games to beindicated registers with the opening d or e, the end of the spring rid- 9o ing over one tooth on the ratchet at every exposure of a number and holding the disk in the proper position.
lt will now be seen from the above thatmy im proved counter is very economical, and, being constructed throughout of celluloid, with the exception of the spring and screws, is very neat and finished in appearance 5 further, that by forming the article of Celluloid or similar pyroXyline compound l am enabled to loo construct it of few parts, the bearings for the spring and disks being molded integral with the casing, and thereby rendering it capable of being manufactured at a small cost.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 5 1. A counter or indicator constructed with a Sectional casing formed with two openings, of two ratehetdisks inelosed within said sectional easing, of three posts or bearings formed integral with one of the sections of the casing. Io on two of which bearings are mounted said disks, and aspring mounted on the other of said bearings, the two ends of which spring engage with ksaid disks, substantially as set forth..
2. A counter oonsistingof the easing A,con 15 structed in two sections7 a I), the said section WILLIAM B. CARPENTER.
