Description
Sept. 13, 1932. H. REITZ 52mm Eon wm'cmas Filed June 9, 1931 Inventor fiER/M/V fli /r2 4 A llorney Patented Sept. 13, 1932 UNITED STATES HERMAN REITZ, OF EAST ISLIP, NEW YORK STAND FOR WATCHES Application filed June 9, 1931.
This invention relates to improvements in supporting stands and has particular reference to a stand for watches.
The primary object of the invention resides in a stand or holder for supporting a pocket watch in a vertical position for display purposes. The stand may be used for supporting watches in a jewellers display window or show case and may also be utilized for home or oflice use for supporting a watch in vertical position upon a cable or desk to facilitate the reading of the time from a distance.
Another object of the invention is to provide a watch stand which may be adjusted to support watches of difierent sizes, but after an initial adjustment of the same to accommodate a particular size watch, the adj ustment is not disturbed to facilitate the removal and insertion of that particular watch.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a watch stand which is simple and inexpensive of construction, and ornamental and attractive in appearance.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claim, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of my improved watch holder with parts broken away in section,
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1, and;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the resilient clamping jaws per se.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the numeral 10 designates a flat elongated base, the top face of which is provided with a longitudinal groove 11 extending the length thereof. Adjustably mounted upon the base 10 are a pair of faced resilient clamping members or jaws 12 which are identical in construction so that a description of one will suflice for the other.
Serial No. 543,194.
Each of the jaw members 12 comprises a single piece of resilient springy material which is formed at one end with an outwardl coiled portion 13, while the opposite end of the material is coiled upwardly and outward- 1y to provide a relatively large coil portion 14. The coilportion 14 is provided with a concaved seat 15 to which is secured a felt strip or lining 16. The intermediate portion of the material from which the member 12' is formed is flat and straight as designated at 17 and which portion is provided with an elongated slot 18.
The jaw members 12 are mounted upon the top of the base with thestraight flat portion 17 seated in the groove 11in a position so that the large coil portions 14 extend outwardly in opposite direction as best seen in Figure 1 of the drawing. When in this position, the smaller coil portions13 bear against the bottom of the groove lland serve to prevent accidental turning or lateral movement of the jaw members with respect to the base.
For the purpose of securing the aw members in an adjusted position, a screw 19 passes through the slot 18 of each member and threads into the base 10, the space between the coil members 13 and 14 serving to permit the introduction of a screw driver to the head of the screw to permit turning of the same.
It will be seen that by looseningthe screws 19, the jaw members 12 may be slid longitudinally of the base so as to position the said jaw members to the desired adjustment. After an initial adjustment of the'jaw members to accommodate a watch of a given size, the screws 19 are tightened which secures the said members in a fixed position. It will therefore be seen that a watch A such as shown in Figures 1 and 2 may be inserted between the jaw members 12 and the side edges of the watch will seat in the concaved seat 15 and bear against the felt cushions or lining 16. The space between the seat of the jaw members is such as to necessitate flexing of the jaw members upon the insertion of the watch in order that a pressure is exerted by the aw members in a direction toward each other so as to clamp the watch in a vertical position with the bottom edge of the same seated in the groove 11. The watch may be readily removed from the holder by merely lifting the same upwardly, whereupon the coil portions 1 1 will spring inwardly toward each other but to insert the watch, it is unnecessary to disturb the initial adjustment as the same may be freely inserted into position as previously explained.
If desired, the screws 19 may be tightened suliiciently to hold the j aw members 12 against accidental sliding so that the same may be manually adjusted without disturbing the screws. hen a watch is inserted, the same causes outward flexing of the coil p0r 15 tions 11 which sets up a binding action between the flat portions 17 and the underside of the screw heads which is sufficient to prevent accidental movement of said jaw members. 20 The stand or holder will be found useful by jewelers in supporting watches in a vertical position for display in show cases or in display windows and will also be found useful in the home or at the office to support a :5 watch in a position to enable the reading of the time from a distance. lVhen the watch is in position within the holder it imparts to the edge, the general appearance of a clock.
\Vhile I have shown and described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that the various changes in construction may be resorted to if desired as come within the scope of the appended claim. 35 Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
A supporting stand comprising a base havw ing a longitudinal groove therein, a pair of coacting holder members seated in said groove for sliding movement, said holder members being provided with upstanding outwardly extending resilient coil portions, and means for securing said holder members in an adjusted position against sliding movement, the inner sides of the coiled portions having concaved seats to receive an article to be supported in a vertical position upon said base. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
HERMAN REITZ.
