The shell or retainer has a central bore 11`in which a lock cylinder 12 is rotatably mounted and held against movement outwardly of the bottom orIv lower Yend '13 ythereof by a shoulder 14 formed by reducing the diameter of the bore 1j1and cooperating with a4 shoulder 15 formed' by reducing the 1outer end portion of the cylinder. n
The retainer 1'0is further provided with two parallelbores 16 and 17 disposedon diametrically opposite sides of bore 11y and terminating short of the bottom of the retainer so'that access. may be had thereto only from the top, the bores 16 and 17 receiving the Shanks 18 and 19,`respectively, of a pad#y lock shackle 20'. The shank 18 is longer than the shank 19 which is provided with opposed locking recesses or notches 21 which cooper` ate lwith va hair-pin shaped locking member 22, to be later described.

of the shank 18 and cooperates with the lpressed through the apertures in the plate 40 shoulder 26 of an enlargement 27 on the extreme inner end of the shank 18 to prevent the outward movement of the shank beyond the member 22, as will be evident. For a short distance above the enlargement 27, the shank 18 is turned, as at 28, to permit the swiveling of the shank 18 when -in its full outward position. The shank 18 1s bored t0 receive an expansile spring 29 which normally urges the shackle outwardly ywhen its shank. 19 is freed by manipulation of the cylinder 12.
The cylinder 12 has a. cam 30 on its upper end which is normally disposed between the sides of the member 22 and when in its locked position the cam is disposed lengthwise of the member 22 inthe manner illustrated in Figure 3. Rotation of the cylinder by a proper key 31 spreads the ends 23 of the khair-pin locking member to free them of the notches or'locking recesses 21 and permit the outwardly opening of the padlock.
The top of theV retainer' and the locking member are protected by a cover 32 of a shape to conformwith the shape ofthe retainer l0 but of smaller size and having a marginal depending flange 33 engageable in a correspondingly shaped groove or channel 34 in the top of the retainer, in the manner best shown in Figures 1 and 2, the cover having apertures 34 and 35 through which the shackle shanks 18 and 19, respectively, pass.V
The cover member is provided with a pair of spaced depending tongues or lugs 36 at each long side thereof which pass into correspondingly shaped openings or recesses 37 in the retainer, the tongues having apertures 38 which register with apertures 39 communieating with kone side face of the retainer 10 but terminating in the recesses 37` near the opposite side thereof.
In assembling the lock, the cylinder 12 is positioned in its bore 11, cover 32 is engaged over the Shanks of the shackle 2O and the shackle shank 18 inserted partly in the bore 16 and the hair-pin locking member 22 then positioned in place. The cover is then engaged over the retainer with its flange 33 pressed in the groove or channel 34. A name plate 40 is then placed on the face of the retainer with which the apertures 39 communicate, which is preferably recessed, as at 41,
to conform with the shape of the name plate and rivets or other fastening means 42 are and the apertures 39 passing through the apertures 38 on the tongues 36 securing the cover in place. The rivets 42 are such that when pressed in position they are held against retraction and thus the entire lock is held in assembled position.
By simultaneously securing the name plate 40 and the cover 32 against detachment, the
primary object of the rivets 42 is concealed,
as their function appears to be only that of mounting the name plate.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of the character described appertains, that I provide a novel and improved padlock construction which is extremely simple, permitting the Vfinishing of the parts prior to assembly, and
which readily lends itself to manufacture in all sizes to afford ample protection at all times.
lhat I claim as my invention is:
1. A padlock, comprising a retainer having three yparallel bores therein arranged with their axes in approximately transverse alignment, the central bore extending through the retainer, a key controlled lock cylinder mounted in the central bore adapted to be inserted therein from the top of the retainer, means preventing axial alignment of the lock cylinder in its bore beyond the bottom face of said retainer, an approximately U-shaped shackle member having its shanks engageable in the other bores of the retainer, a locking member disposed in the top face of the retainer, means carried by said locking member and engageable with one shank of the shackle to prevent movement of the shackle in the retainer, means whereby rotation of the cylinder disengages the locking member from said shackle shank to permit its movement from the retainer, and means whereby said locking member likewise prevents detachment of the shackle from the retainer.
2. A padlock, comprising a retainer having parallel bores therein communicating with its top, one bore extending through the retainer to its bottom, a key controlled lock cylinder mounted in the bore extended through the retainer and adapted to be inserted therein from the top, means preventing axial movement of the lock cylinder in its bore beyond the bottom of the retainer, a shackle member having a shank engageable in the other bore of the retainer, a locking member disposed in a recess in the top face of the retainer and engageable with the shackle shank to lock the same in the retainer, means whereby rotation of the cylinder disengages the loking member from the shackle shank, a cover adapted to be engaged over the top of the retainer, tongues projected from the marginal edge portion of the cover into recesses in the retainer to intersect transverse apertures extended into the retainer from one side face to a point short of the other, and fastening means adapted to be secured in said transverse openings to pass through said tongues and secure the cover to the retainer.
3. A padlock, comprising a retainer, a substantiallyv U shaped shackle adapted to ijste'se be secured in the retainer, a locking member carried by the retainer and engageable with one of the shanks of the shackle to restrict movement thereof with respect to the retainer, means for releasing said locking member to permit movement of said shank away from the retainer, and means whereby said locking member cooperates with the other shank of the shackle to prevent detachment of the shackle from the retainer.
4:. A padlock, comprising a retainer, a shackle having parallel members adapted to be received in apertures in the retainer, a locking member engageable with one shackle member to restrict movement thereof with respect to the retainer, means for freeing said shackle member from the locking member, said other shackle member being freely slidable within its aperture in the retainer upon the release of the first mentioned shackle member, and means whereby said locking member cooperates with said other shackle member to restrict outward movement of the shackle with respect to the retainer to prevent its detachment therefrom.
5. A padlock, comprising a retainer, a shackle having parallel members adapted to be received in apertures in said retainer, a locking member engageable with one shackle member to restrict `movement thereofwith respect to the retainer, means for freeing said shackle member from the locking member, the other shackle member being freely slidable within its aperture in the retainer upon the release of the first mentioned shackle member, means whereby said locking member restrict-s outward movement of the shackle with respect to the retainer to prevent its detachment therefrom, and means whereby the shackle is freely rotatable about the axis of its second mentioned member after a predetermined outward movement of the shackle.
6. A padlock, comprising a retainer having a plurality of substantially parallel bores, a shackle receivable in two of said bores, a key controlled lock cylinder rotatable in another bore and restricted against outward movement therethrough in one direction, a lockin member carried by the retainer and opera le to engage the shackle to restrict movement thereotwith respect to the retainer, a cover having apertures through which the shackle extends and maintaining the lock cylinder and locking member in their proper assembled position within the retainer, and means remote from the cover for securing the same against detachment from the retainer.
7. A padlock comprising a retainer having spaced parallel bores, a shackle having parallel members receivable in said bores, an abutment carried by each parallel member, said abutments being on different planes, a locking member carried by the retainer and having 'a 'portion Ynormally extended into eachn bore whereby one of said portions' engages one of the abutments to secure the shackle Ain the retainer and the other portion ofthe locking member engages the other abutment when the shackle is released .to pre-v vent detachment thereoffrom the retainer."

A padlock comprising a retainer, a shackle having parallel members adapted to be received in apertures in the retainer, each parallel member having a portion out away to provide an abutment, the cut away portion of one parallel member being longer than that of vthe other, and a locking member having portions normally extended into the cut away portions of the parallel members, the engagement of the locking member with the smaller of the cut away portions serving to restrain the shackle member against longitudinal movement with respect to the retainer and the engagement of the locking member portion with the other cut away portion of the shackle member defining the degree of longitudinal movement of a shackle member with respect to the retainer. 10. A padlock comprising a retainer, a shackle having parallel members adapted to be received in apertures in the retainer, each parallel member having a portion cut away to provide an abutment, a locking member carried Vby the vretainer and having a part fixedly extended into the cut away portion of one parallel member and a part yieldably engageable with the cut away portion of the other parallel member, said last mentioned engagement securing the shackle against movement with respect to the retainer, means for disengaging thelockingmember fromsaid last mentioned cut away portion to permit tifo movement of the shackle with respect to the Y retainer, and the engagement of the fixed part of the locking member with the firstmentioned cutA away portion defining the movement of the shackle member to prevent detachment thereof from the retainer.

A padlock comprising a retainer having spaced parallel bores, a shackle having parallel members adapted to be received in said bores, said parallel members having portions cut away to provide abutments7 the cut away portions of one parallel member` being longer than the other so that the abutment provided thereby is disposed on a different plane from the other abutment,a substan tially U shaped locking member, means mounting the locking member in the retainer with its closed end extended into one of the bores to be engageable with the longer of the two cut away portions and one of its free ends yieldably engaged with the cut away portion of the other parallel member to secure the shackle in closed position, and means for releasing said last mentioned abutment from the locking member to permit movement of the shackle away romthe retainer, said movement of the shackle being limited by the engagement of the closed end of the locking member with its cooperating abut ment.
