HTTOfP/VEK United States Patent 2,782,625 COVER FOR CYLINDERIJOCKS' Merton S. Williams, Terryville, Conn., assignor to The Eagle Lock Company, Terryville, Conn .a-.-corporation of Connecticut.
Application June 2, 1953; Serial-No. 359,111 4.Claims. (Cl. 70-455) This invention'relates'to a coverfor-cylinderflocks and more particularly to a devicewhichis attachable to a conventional cylinder lock to provide a cover over the front. of the locle for-protecting the lock mechanism'from dust and-dirt. I
It is anobject of this invention to' provid'ea'device which may be readily attached to' standard forms-of cylinder locks without: requiring special. operations or tools.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a dust cover foracylinder lock whichmay be .readily attachedto'thelock as it is installed in the position inwhich it is to be used.
Another object of this invention is to provide such a cover having means engageable with the case of the cylinder lock to accurately position the cover relatively thereto.
A still further object of this invention is to provide such a cover for cylinder locks which is economical to pro duce, easy to install and highly eflicient in its operation.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be more clearly understood from the following description and from the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view illustrating the manner in which my improved dust cover is attached to a cylinder lock.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the said cover.
Fig. 3 is a sectional side view, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, of the cover, further illustrating its construction.
Fig. 4 is a front view, partly in vertical section, showing the construction of the supporting member and of the hinge portion of the cover.
Fig. 5 is a front view of the cover supporting member in blank form.
Fig. 6 is a front view of the cover member partly in blank form.
Fig. 7 is a front view of the hinge pin used in said cover.
Fig. 8 is a front view of the return spring.
As shown in the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates the case of a conventional cylinder lock which is usually provided with oppositely disposed flat side portions 5-a and a threaded portion 6. The case has a head portion 7 which is usually in the form of a flange that is larger r than the threaded portion. The said lock is attachable to a member, such as a wall 8 or the like, by inserting the threaded portion of the case through a hole in said member and fastening it with a suitable nut 9.
The present invention provides a dust cover which includes a supporting member, generally indicated at 10, in the form of a circular portion 11 having an opening 12 therethrough which conforms to the shape of the case 5 of the cylinder lock and is adapted to receive said case. It will be noted that the flat side portions 12a-12-a of said opening will engage the flat sides 5 a of the case 5 to accurately position the supporting member relatively to the cylinder lock and also prevent relative rotation therebetween.
The said supporting member 10 has an extension 13 which is formed to provide the stationary supporting loop 14 of a hinge 15.
supporting member.
2,782,625 Patented Feb. 26, 1957 A cover 16'is pivotally mounted upon said supporting member 10 by'means of parallel extensions 1717-a which project from the said cover and are formed to provide the movable loops 18 and 19 of said hinge by meansof which the said cover is pivotally mounted upon the supporting member 10.
Thesaid hinge includes a hinge pin 20 having an enlarged' portion 21, which is of substantially the same diameter as the inside of the loop 18, and a reduced shank portion 22 which is of a smaller diameter than the inside of the'loops 14 and 19 so as to provide a space between the saidishank andsaid loops.
A return spring 23is contained within the said loops 14 and" 19 and. is. of nearly thesame diameter as the intern'aldiam'eter of said'loops and surrounds the shank portion;22'so as to operatively provide an extension of the enlarged portion 21 of the said hinge pin for supporting'theloopsl8'and-l9in axial'alignment with the loop 14." The'ends of the hinge pin 20 are headed, as at-24 and25, so as to secure the hinge portions together.
Thesaid'spring 23 has an end portion 26 whichextends radially therefrom and projects into a notch 27 in the end oftheextension 13 so as to anchor the .said spring to the The opposite end of the said spring h'asaprojectiou 28" which extends into a notch 29 at the end of the extension 17-a to secure the movable end of the spring to the cover 16.
The said cover is preferably provided with a tab 30 to aid in the raising of the cover.
My improved dust cover is readily attachable to a cylinder lock, while the said lock is being mounted in the position in which it is to be used, by simply inserting the portion 6 of the case through the opening 12 in the supporting member 10 before the said case is inserted through the hole in the Wall member 8.
When the nut 9 is threaded upon the portion 6 and tightened in place, the supporting member will be firmly clamped between the head portion 7 of the lock and the exterior surface of said wall member and the cover 16 will thereby be securely mounted in position over the front of the lock.
The spring 23 is tensioned so that it will bias the cover towards its closing position and normally retain it against the head of the lock in the position illustrated in Fig. 3.
It will be understood from the above description that the outside diameter of the spring 23 is of substantially the same diameter as the enlarged portion 21 of the hinge pin so that it will cooperate with the said hinge pin in supporting the loops 14, 18 and 19 of the hinge in axial alignment.
I claim:
1. A lock cover including a supporting member having an opening therein, a hinge portion extending from said supporting member, a cover having a hinge portion extending therefrom and coo crating with the hinge portion on the supporting member for pivotally mounting the member and having a movable end portion secured to the cover for biasing said cover toward closed position.
2. A cover for a cylinder lock having a case with a flange thereon; said cover including a supporting member having an opening therein adapted to receive a portion of the lock case in a position wherein the flange will engage the supporting member for retaining it in clamped position between said flange and a separate member on which said lock is mounted, an extension on said supporting member formed into a loop, a cover adapted to fit over the said flange and having a pair of spaced pro:
jections formed into loops cooperating with the said loop on the supporting member, pivot means including a hinge pin extending through said loops, the said hinge pin having an enlarged portion fitting snugly in one of the loops and a reduced portion extending through the other loops, and a spring surrounding the said reduced portion and providing a bearing for said other loops; the said spring being anchored at one end to said cover and at its opposite end to the supporting member for biasing the cover toward closed position.
3. A lock including a case having a reduced portion and an enlarged portion forming an annular flange on said'case, a supporting member surrounding said reduced portion and abutting said flange, a loop extending from said supporting member and disposed adjacent to the flange, a cover normally fitting over said flange and having a loop cooperating with the loop of the supporting member to provide a hinge for pivotally mounting the cover to the supporting member, a hinge pin pivotally connecting said loops, and a spring member surrounding said hinge pin and cooperating therewith for retaining the loops in axial alignment; the said spring member acting to bias the cover toward closed position.
4. A lock including a case having a threaded body portion and an annular flange at one end of said body portion, a supporting member having a hole therein for w s g 4 a receiving saidbody portion, the said supporting member being positioned between the said flange and the marginal surface of a hole in a separate member through which the said body portion is inserted, a nut threaded to said body portion and abutting the marginal surface of said hole for securing the lock case to said separate member and clamping the supporting member between the flange and the separate member, a loop extending from said supporting member and disposed adjacent to the said flange, a cover normally fitting over said flange and having a loop extending therefrom at each side of the loop on the supporting member, and a hinge pin extending through said loops and having a spring member surrounding a portion thereof and cooperating therewith for retaining the said loops in axial alignment; the said spring member being anchored at one end thereof'to said supporting-member and at its oposite end to said cover for biasing the cover toward its normal position.
