ceeds, the invention resides in certain novelA features of construction, and in the combi- 15 nation and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a tank showing the cleaning mechanism there- 1n.
20 Figure 2 is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the shaft.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view through the cleaning apparatus and particu* larly through one of the brushes.
Figure 6 is a section taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 5, and
Figure 7 is a detail section through the bearing blocks.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes the bottom 35 of the tank from which rises the cylindrical Wall 6. A top 7 is mounted on the upper edge of the wall 6 and is formed at its center with a stuffing box 9 through which is ournalled `a vertical shaft 10. The bottom end of the shaft l0 is formed with a semi-spherical knob 11 adapted to rest in a concave seat 12 formed in the upper surface of a bearing block 14 which is welded or otherwise Xed on the bottom 5. A plate 15 is hingedly mounted as 45 at 16 on the block 14 and has aslot 17 extending from an intermediate portion to the free end thereof so that the shaft 10 may extend therethrough. A bolt 18 is associated with plate to hold the same in a down position. Oppostely extending plates 20 are bolted to the/lower portion of the shaft 10 andare 'Xed to brush headsA 21 which have downy' Wardly disposed bristles 22. Y
Braces 28 are fixed? to the brushheads 21 by the same-means 24 as hold the plates 20 5? thereto and are vfastened l'to thev shaft by means-25%- Y v Largerbraces 26ar'e fastened to the shaft as at 27 above the means 25 and are fixed to the brush heads adjacent their outer ends as ait 28. The lshaft 10 extends above the tank and on its outer upper end is equipped with a hand Wheel 29. The bottom of the tank 5 is provided with an opening with a drain valve 30 therein. Obviously by turn- 55' ing the wheel 29 thef brushes will clean-the bottom settlings from the tankV without unduly stirring up the oil. i y i V The top 7y isprovided with ay manhole (Fig. 1)-t-hrough which the several parts ofv 79 the deviceV are passedv into thel tank to be properly assembled by a person Within the tank. The .manhole-also serves asan entrance and exit opening for the tank; l
It is thought that the construction, utility, operation and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in'this art without a more detailed description thereof. 'l
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exempliflcation since in actual practice it attains the features of advantages enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the 8 above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In combination with a tank, of a block fixed to the bottom of the tank and having a concave recess in the upper surface thereof, a shaft journalled through the top of the tank and terminating at its bottom end in a knob bearing in the recess, means on the block for holding the knob in the recess, and brushing means on the shaft to engage the bottom of the tank, said means for holding the knob in the recess comprising a plate hingedly mounted on the block at one end and means for holding the other end locked in place, said plate having a slot through Which the shaft extends. p
2. In combination With a tank, 0f a block Xed to the bottom of the tank and having a concave recess in the upper surface thereof, a shaft j ournalled through the top of the tank and terminating at its bottom end in a knob bearing in the recess, means on the block for holding the knob in the recess, and brushing means on the shaft to engage the bottom of the tank, said means for holding the knob in the recess comprising a plate hingedly mounted on the block at one end and means for holding the other end locked in place,
Vsaid plate having a slot through which the shaft extends, said brushing means comprising a pair of brushes radiating from the shaft, and means for securing the brushes to the shaft.
3. In combination with a. tank, ofa block y fixed to the bottom of the tank and having a concave recess in the upper surface thereof, a shaft journalled through the top of the tank and terminating at its bottom end in a knob bearing in the recess, means on the block for holding the knob in the recess, and brushing means on the shaft to engage the bottom ofthe tank, said means for holding the knob in the recess comprising a plate hingedly mounted on the block at one end and means for holding the other end locked in place, said plate having a slot through which the shaft extends, said brushing means comprising a pair of brushes radiating from the shaft, and means for securing the brushes to the shaft, the outer end of the shaft having a hand Wheel thereon.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature.
WALTER MCANEAR.
