A tongue 19 is formed upon the interior of the spacing member and is adapted to fit the groove 16 that is provided in the periphery of the cylinder 6 and thereby prevent the spacing member from having a rotative movement upon the cylinder.
One face of the hub portion 17 of each spacing member 10 has a plurality of radial grooves 20 formed therein and when the spacing members are located in position upon the cylinder 6, the adjacent faces of said spacing members abut together end to end, and the grooves 20 of one spacing member co-operate with the face of the hub portion of the adjacent spacing member to form openings which extend through the hub portion from the periphery thereof to the pcriphery of the cylinder 6, and when a saw 9 is mounted upon the periphery of the cylinder between two spacing members 10 the projections 14 that are provided upon the saw will project through the grooves 20.
When the Saws 9 are located in position upon the periphery of the cylinder 6 between two adjacent spacing members, the saw will project beyond the periphery of the spacing members through a space 21 that is provided between adjacent faces of the spacing members and this space 21 is sufficiently wide and the grooves 20 are sufficiently deep to permit the saw 9 to have a limited longitudinal sliding movement upon the periphery of the cylinder 6.
Mounted in the spacing members 10 and spaced at regular intervals therearound are compression members 22 constructed in the form of plungers 23 which are slidably mounted in openings 24 formed in the spacing member. Each plunger 23 has a flange 25 formed integral therewith which is located in a recess 26 provided in one face of the spacing member, and the plunger 23 is held within the opening 24 and recess 26 by means of a screw 27 which acts as a means of regulating the longitudinal movement of the plunger 23 within the spacing member and also as a means of varying the tension upon a spring 28 which is located within a recess 29 formed upon the interior of the plunger 23, one end of said spring abutting against the bottom of said recess and the other end of said spring abutting against the endof said screw. The several saws 9 and spacing members 10 are all held in position upon the periphery of thecylinder'ti by means of a collar 30 and nut 31, the latter being adjustably mounted upon a. screw-threaded portion 32 provided upon the shaft 8. When all of the saws 9 and spacing members 10 are located in position upon thecylinder 6, the various compression members 22 will engage a face of each of the saws 9 and yieldingly force the oppo- "havin site face thereof against the face of the adjacent spacing member and if there is any variation in the thickness of the saws the compression members 22 will compensate for this variation in thickness, whether it be an increase or a decrease from the correct thickness of the saw. It will be evident, therefore, that the cylinder 6 will always have a predetermined number of saws 9 and spacing members 10 mounted thereon; the spacing of the saws will not be appreciably affected and the efiective length of the cylinder will always remain the same.
While I have illustrated and described this invention as being applied to the cylinder for a cotton gin or linter and the saws and spacing members as being adapted to be mounted upon a hollow cylindrical member, it is evident that other applications of the invention are possible and that wherever it is necessary to'mount a plurality of disoshapec members upon an arbor or equivalent structure, that spacing members embodying my invention may be utilized to space said members apart without departing from the spirit of this invention.

1. A cylinder for a cotton gin or the like having, in combination, an arbor, a plurality of yieldable spacing members mounted upon said arbor, and a'saw yieldingly mounted upon the arbor and positioned between each of the spacing members.
2. A-cylinder for a cotton gin or the like having, in combination, an arbor, a plurality of yieldable spacing members mounted upon said arbor and abutting together end to'end, and a saw yieldingly mounted upon the arbor and positioned between each of the spacing members.
3. A cylinder for a cotton gin or the like having, in combination, an arbor, a plurality of spacing members mounted upon said arbor, a saw mounted upon the arbor between each of the spacing members, and compression members interposed between each spacing member and saw and yieldingly engaging the latter.
4. A cylinder for a cotton gin or the like having, in combination, an arbor, a plurality of spacing members mounted upon said arbor, a saw slidably mounted upon the areor between each of the spacing members, and
compression members mounted upon the spacing members and yieldingly engaging the saws. 1

A cylinder for a cotton gin or the like having, in combination, a cylindrical member, a plurality of spacing members mounted upon said cylindrical member, yielding means carried by said spacing members and a saw mounted upon the cylindrical member between each of the spacing members and engaging the yielding means.

A cylinder for a cotton gin or the like having, in combination, a cylindrical member, a plurality of yieldable spacing members mounted upon said cylindrical member and embodying therein hub portions abutting together longitudinally, and a saw also mounted upon the cylindrical member and interposed between each of the spacing members.
9. A cylinder for a cotton gin or the like having, in combination, a cylindrical member, a plurality of spacing members mounted upon said cylindrical member and abutting together longitudinally, compression members mounted upon the spacing members, and a saw slidably mounted upon the cylindrical member between each of the spacing members and yieldingly engaging the compression members.
10. A cylinder for a cotton gin or the like having, in combination, a cylindrical member, a plurality of spacing members fast to said cylindrical member, a saw slidably mounted upon the cylindrical member between each of the spacing members, and a plurality of compression members interposed between the spacing members and saws and yleldingly holding each of the latter against a spacing member.
11. A cylinder fora cotton gin or the like having, in combination, a cylindrical member, a plurality of spacing members fast to said cylindrical member and embodying therein hub portions abutting together end to end, a saw mounted upon the cylindrical member between each of the spaclng members and projecting beyond the periphery of the latter, and compression members interposed between the spacing members and saws and forcing each of the latter against a spacing member. 12. A cylinder for a cotton gin or the like having, in combination, a cylindrical member, a plurality of spacing members fast to said cylindrical member and embodying therein hub portions abutting together end to end, a saw mounted upon the cylindrical member between each of the spacing members,
and a plurality of compression members slidspacing members and saws and ably mounted upon each of-the spacing mem bers and ,yieldingly engaging each of the therein hub port-ions abutting together end to end, a saw mounted upon the cylindrical member between each of the spacing members, plungers slidably mounted upon each of the spacing members, and means to force each of said plungers against an adjacent saw.

A'cylinder for a cotton gin or the like having, in combination, a cylindrical member, a plurality of spacing members fast to said cylindrical member and embodying therein hub portions abutting together end to end and provided with grooves in a face thereof, a saw positioned between each of the spacing members and slidably engaging the cylindrical member through said grooves, and compression members interposed between the yieldingly holding each of the latter against a spacing member.
16. A cylinder for a cotton gin or the like having, in combination, a cylindrical member, a plurality of spacing members fast to said cylindrical member and embodying therein hub portions abutting together end to end and provided with grooves in a face thereof, a saw'positioned between each of the spacing members and slidably engaging the cylindrical member through said grooves, a plunger slidably mounted upon each of the spacing members, and means to force each of said plungers against'an adjacent saw.
17. A cylinder for a cotton gin or the like having, in combination, a cylindrical-member provided with a groove extending longitudinally of the periphery thereof, spacing members mounted upon said cylindrical member having hub portions embodied there in abutting together end to end and provided with radial grooves in a face thereof, said spacing members also having a tongue embodied therein slidable in the groove of the cylindrical member, and a saw positioned upon the cylindrical-member between each of the spacing members and having radial projections embodied therein engaging the cylindrical member through the radial grooves of the spacing members, said saws also having a tongue embodied therein slidable in the longitudinal groove of the cylindrical n1e1nher and positioned to align the projections of the saws with the grooves of the spacing members.
