The invention relates intgeneral to cutting instruments, and more part-icularlyto a knife for cutting or trimming composition shingles or the like. H
in object of the:inventionisitoprovide a knife which is of aproper and convenient shape for cutting and' trimming composition shingles. v o, f
Another object of the invention'is toprovidea knife having a separable bladejwhich is reversible so that one'endzcan-be pointed when the other end has become ;dull, ,the blade being preferably crescent. shaped to facilitate trimming and cutting the shingles.
Another object of the invention is to provide a knife having separable blade with vprovision for protecting the .user from the end ofthe bladenot'in'use." g I Another object of the invention is to ;,provide'a. knife of the above kind Which-is safe and convenient to use, simple andinexpensive to make andrugged and efl'ectiveinconstruc- 'tion.. x :1
These and other objects will beapparent from. the following description andscl'aims when considered withuthe accompanying drawing, in which i 1 I Fig. 1 is.a side elevation o'fone'form of knife according tothe invention; v
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary end view'looking inthe directionof'the line 2-2in Fig.1.;
Fig.3 is a sectiononthe-line 3. -3 of Fig. 1,; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form ofknife; Fig. 5 is a section on the line" 55 of'Fig. 1 Fig. 6 is a side elevation-of another modified form ofknife; and: J J h Fig. 7 is a section onrthe line 7-7-of F ig; 6. In the following '1 description and -.in' the claims parts will be I identified by specific '=names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their applicationtosimila-r parts as the art will permit. l
Like reference characters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the drawing accompanying and forming partof this specificatlon, ;pract1cal. commercial embodimentsof the inventionare shown,
but as such illustrations are primarily .for purposes of disolosure, it will'be understood that the knife can easily be" 1930. Serial No. 467,451.
that-the structure may be modifiedin" various respects without departure'from the broad spirit andfscop e ofthe invention as hereinafte'r defined andgclaimed.
Referring now to the drawing, a'ndmore particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the knife com} prise-s in I general a handle 10, blade holder '11: and a blade 12.. The-blade holderill. has side-Walls 14 and'15jj0ined bya curvedlback Wall 16, the side. wall 14 having an extension or-tang 13 passing into-the body of the holder 10, through ametal collar or ferrule22.
Itwill be understood that the'holde'r ll may conveniently: be made from :sheet ;metal bent or distorted to shape by-a suitablej die. -It -Will be understood that'the tang 1-3 is fastened *tothe handle 12in any approved manneig the fastening elementg21 being passed-through the handle and the tang 13 to assist in iholding thesemembers together.
- Disposed'within'the recess inthe holderll, formedby Walls 14, 15 and 16, is the knife blade 12. Theblade 1 2 is preferably crescent V shaped as indicated, having -a,-convexfback edge 18 which is preferably blunt, and' a concave cutting edge 17 which is -preferably sharp all the way from the point lgt the PI T o 1 ,1;
At apart of the blade '12, -midway,the point-s19 and 20, a hole-is provided through 4 which is passed the fastening screw23 which .is preferably threaded into the wall 14 to rigidly hold the knifef bladeinlthehdlder. Itwill-be noted that the blunt edge 18 snu'g ly flts the curved wall 16 so that any rotary movement of the bladeabout the fastening element .23 is .prevented. "Furthermore, it
will; be seen that the-parts'of thewallsH and .15. Which extend beyond the unusedrpart of the cutting edge '17 act to .protectthe' user from the-unusedcutting edge. Thus it will b eseen that the mflyparrtr the knife blade exposedisthepart it i'sdesi'red to use. The points 19-and O are 'sharp so thrust into the y of fihil g e at anypoint'and'the shingle trimmed or cut to fit the roof or other surface to whiclrit is applied. Furthermore-the en the extent ofthe cutting edge '17 is'available for use all the way from the exposedopoint 19 to the edge of the Walls 14 and 15. When the exposed part of the edge 17 and point 19 becomes dulled or nicked through use, it is only necessary to take out the screw 23, re verse the blade and replace the screw 23.
If desired, the knife may take the form illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5. In this construction the handle is secured to the tang 33 which passes through the ferrule 44 in any desired manner, but preferably in a manner similar to that described above.
The blade holder 31 comprises a side wall 34 having a curved back wall "36 and a stampled up tongue 35. The blade 32 has a convex, blunt back edge 42 and a curved front edge which, if desired, may be made up of the concave portions 37 and 38 which are sharp. The concave edges 37 and 38 intersect at point 39 and terminate in sharp cutting points 40 and 41. The screw 43 is provided for detachabl-y connecting the holder and blade.
The use of the knife shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is similar to that described above. The close fit of the unused part of the cutting edge indicated by 38 in the drawing, together with the position of the tongue 35 and the position of the point 41 atthe end of the holder or handle 30 serves to further protect the user from the unused p art of the cutting edge. It will be understood that the blade 32 is reversible in this construction in the same manner as explained above and that the blade 32 is rigidly and immovably secured to the holder by a screw 43 and the close fit of the curved wall 36 and the back edge 42 of the blade. It will also be understood that, if desired the blade of Fig. 4 may be used with the holder of Fig. 1 and similarly the blade of Fig. 1 may be used with the holder of Fig. 4.
Referring now to Figs. 6 and 7 a knife having a straight edged blade is shown. This knife comprises a holder 50, a handle 51 and a reversible blade 52. The holder comprises a back wall 53 and side walls 54 brought closer together at 55.
The blade 52 comprises end cutting portions 56 with an intermediate fastening portion 57, a screw 58 being passed through fastening portion 57 and the back wall 53 to hold the parts assembled.
The straight side edges 59 of the portions .56 may be sharp for cutting and, if desired,
the end edges 60 may also be sharp for cutting or they may be blunt; in either case the intersections of the edges 59 and 60 may be sharp for thrusting in the body of a composition shingle or of linoleum.
It will be noted that the edges 59 and 60 which are not in use are spaced from the holder 50 so thatthey are protected and kept sharp. At the same time the position of the unused end of the blade in the holder is such I that the user is protected from being accidentally cut by the unused part of the blade.
It will be understood that the holder 50 has a tang 61 extending into the body of the handle 51 and secured thereto in any desired manner. The use of the knife will be obvious from the above description to those skilled in the art.
Thus knives have been provided which are most convenient for cutting shingles of composition material and the like. It will fit easily into small places and can be used effectively to trim a shingle or other similar article to any desired curve or shape. Furthermore, the devices are insured of long life because, when one part of the blade becomes dull, it can be reversed and the other part used. In addition, the knives are safe to use and the user is not liable to get accidentally cut from the parts of the blade which are not in use at the time.
While certain novel features of the invention have been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a knife for cutting shinglesand the like, a handle, a holder comprising a single side wall and a convex back wall forming a seat, said side wall having a part secured to said handle, a substantially crescent-shaped blade having a convex back edge and a concave cutting edge, said edges terminating at their remote ends in sharp points, said blade reversibly fitting in said seat with its back edge abutting the back wall of said holder a removable fastening element threading said side wall and a part of said blade midway said sharp points, and a projection on said side wall close to but spaced from the unused part of the cutting edge to protect the user therefrom, said blade being removable from said holder in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the blade.
