' dresses, hats and shoes.
A main object of the invention is to provide an attaching means or clip for an ornament of this kind, which is particularly adapted for feminine use in that no mechanical skill whatever is required for afiixing it to a garment.
A further object is the provision in such a clip of tension means which cannot be strain-ed beyond its point of elasticity.
Another object is to provide for such an ornament, an affixing or gripping member made entirely of one piece and which with the ornament proper, combines to form a simple two piece structure requiring no hinge pins or separate springs.
A further object is to provide on the ornament to which the clip is to be attached, an integral lug formed with means to mount the clip, said means being provided with an angled top surface which serves to positively limit the movement of the gripping member or clip when opened, so that the tension spring may not be unduly strained.
Other useful objects will become apparent from the following specifications which describes the attending drawing and which illust-rates a preferred embodiment of the invention and in which:
Fig. l is illustrative of a rear view of an ornament provided with gripping means or clip in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates a side view thereof as used, and
Fig. 3 shows a vertical sectional view as taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1,with the gripping member in its outermost position.
Referring to the drawing in greater detail, there is shown at 5 the rear side of an ornament 6 which is of generally well known construction. It is usually a casting of soft white metal set with rhinestones. In this instance it is preferred that a bifurcated lug 7 be integrally cast with the ornament 6 and that the lug be provided with a bridgelike member 8.
-' At its free end the member 9 The gripping member or clip 9 is preferably made of thin but fairly rigid metal stock capable of being formed in punching and forming dies. .Speed from the longitudinal-margins of the member 9, slits 10 may be made formng a central tab 11 and two adjacent tines 12 which are curved to produce resilient members as shown.
' From the center of the tab 11 there is preferably punched a tongue 13 which may be readily bent-around the bridge 8 forming a hinge to unite for articulation the ornament 6 with the gripping member is preferably prong or prongs l4 portion of a garment such provided'with a gripping for coaction with a as is shown at 15.
The spring tines 12 are bent or curved to such a degree-that when their ends and the prongs let all bear againstthe rear side 5 of the'ornament n0 loo'seness between the ornament and gripping member will be apparent, i." e., the springs 12 will be under slight ten sion. It is desirable therefore that the springs 12 impinge against the ornament on the side of the lug 7 opposite from where the prongs'li impinge. It is apparent then that the prongs 14 may be removed from contact with the rear side of the ornament to permit insertion of a portion of a garment between the ornament and the gripping member by applying pressure against the end ofthe tab 11, which serves as a fingerpiece and as the ends of the springs 12 are firmly impinged against the ornament, the springs will be further tensioned as indicated in Fig. 3. WVhen the pressure is released from the tab 11 the gripping member will assume the position shown in Fig. 2 with the prongs l4 pressing into the garment and the springs 12in tension.
The lug 7 is preferably provided with a flat,
slightly angled top 16 for engagement with the under face of the tab 11. The degree of this angle will determine the amount of separation between the ornament and the gripas descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many modifications Without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims Havin g,; tlnus; described -mfy inventrfion :pvhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 7 10 Patent, is: t V
