IMPROVEMENT lN REVOLVING INDEXES.

Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No 187,526, dated February 20, 1877 application filed i September 21, 1876.-

To att who-m it may concern:

Be it known that I, JA'coB E'rTINc-Ee, of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Revolving Indexes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to an improved index for the use of accountants, book-keepers, &c.,

' and consists in the mechanism hereinafter specified, its object being to furnish a device whereby much time and trouble are saved by keeping before the accountant an index or register of the names entered on the ledger, journal, or other book.

The figure shown is a perspective view of a device containing an incorporation of the elements of the invention.

In the accompanyin g drawings, A represents a box or case, which is provided on its upper portion with the hinged lid or cover B, and on its front side or face with the transparent sliding door D.,'operating in the verti- .cal grooves cut in the edges of the inner faces ofthe sides E of the box. Upon the inner faces of the sides E are secured the blocks F, in which are journaled the ends of the axle H, which is provided with the drum or cylinder I. One end of the axle H is furnished with the cog-wheel or pinion L, which meshes with the segment al cog-gearin g N, pivoted at about itspcenter to the side of the box, so as to have a free vibratory motion, and provided with the lever or crank handle P, Which extends upward through the slot T, cut in the lid B, and by Which the .power is applied. Upon the cylinder I isfastened a strip-of paper, suitably ruled and spaced, and providedwith alphabetically-arranged names, representing, as

near as possible the index of a led ger, and indicating the number of the page upon Which the account of the said names may be found.

To operate the device it is only necessary to move the lever or crank handle P, When motion will be communicated to' the axle, thereby revolving the drum or cylinder I, and bringing the desired name and number before the transparent door, thus enabling the operator to turn readily to the proper place or page in the ledger orjournal.

lt is obvious that other information besides the name and number could be placed upon the cylinder, if desired.

What I claim as my inventlon, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.
