This invention relates to metal buttons, and among other objects aims to provide a durable button which may be made cheaply and by a few, simple operations.-

The various elements of the illustrative button are made of raw materials of such form as to require a minimum fabrication or treatment to connect them into button parts. The shank 10 of the button being generally cylindrical in character and embodying `a remade of solid, cylindrical rod stock Whose diameter is that of the shank of the finished button. so that the fabric to which the button is vattached is tightly gripped between the fastener head and thevbase of the button.

VThe button head 12 may be attached to the button shank in any vappropriate manner, such as byspot welding or, l*as here shown, riveting the end ofthe button shank overr the Ybutton head. The button head` is preferably provided with a protective yand decorative coveringV "ffl which serves also to conceal or obliterate any evidence of the riveting or other mode of at' ltaching the button head to the shank. In the present case the covering shown in the form of a thin metal shell 26 is attached to the 'fibutton head by crimping its margins 27'V underneath-the head. The shell l26 is'prefp erably non-corrosive incharacter and may be fprovided Awith any desired form vof embossf `r ing 28`eitherfor'the purpose.v of decorationi J :'or'to' exhibit a trademarkor'both.

Obviously the invention is notv limited toV the details of the illustrated embodiment hereindisclosed, since these may be variously modified VMoreoveigit is not indispensable that all'features of the invention be used con-- jointly since various features may be advantageously employed in different combinations and sub-combinations.
