BUTTON.
Application filed September 7, 1920- Serial No. 408,469
[0 alZ whoa/i it 'Ill-G/f/ concern:
Be it known that I, Danton A. lVrrrrn, a citizen oi the United States, residing at South Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and uset'ul improvements in a construction of buttons more particularly oi": that class of buttons which. is provided with a base member, a post and head, such for instance as collar buttons, cuff buttons, studs and the like; and the object of this invention is to form the head and post portion of this button hollow and all of one piece, and to also provide means in the post whereby the same may be readily attached or secured to the base portion of the button.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shoulder intermediate the ends of the post to serve as an abutment to engage the inner face of the base member.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an enlarged view of my improved button showing the post as carrying a head-portion and as riveted into the base member.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation representing a thimble or cup-shaped member which has been drawn up from sheet stock to be subsequently reduced by a swaging operation to the shape desired.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation illustrating the cup shown in Figure 2 as having been reduced to provide a head, a neck, and an enlarged abutment, flange and an attaching shank portion.
Figure 1 is a modification illustrating the cup member shown in Figure 2, as drawn into a spherically shaped head with a reduced post portion having a flaring end flan e to which a base or shoe is attached.
The invention relates more particularly to the provision of a simple, practical and inexpensive means for forming buttons, more particularly of the collar-button type; wherein the headand post are "formed from a single piece of sheet metal by a drawing and -swaging operation, the same being shaped to be readily connected or attached to the base portion of the button, and the following is a detailed description of one means by which this result may be accomplished:
With. reference to the drawings, 10 designates the base portion of a button, which is preferably formed of pearl, but which may be of any suitable material and through titans the center of which I have formed an attaching hole 11.
The post member of this button is preferably formed from sheet stock which is first drawn upinto cup form, as illustrated in Figure 2, which cup is then subjected to a swaging operation and is reduced by a multiplicity of rapid blows to form a hollow head portion 12 and a reduced tubular neck portion 13 below the head, leaving an enlarged shoulder 14 from the lower side of which the post continues providing a shank portion 15. Theouter flaring end 16 of this shank is subsequently cut off leaving the same of sufiicient length to pass through the eye or opening 11 in the base member and be riveted on the outside thereof as at 17, thus drawing the shoulder firmly against the inner face 18 of the base member, securely connecting the post to this base.
It will be noted that by my improved construction, roll-plated gold sheet stock may be employed and by drawing the same up into thimble form the base metal is entirely inclosed leavin only the precious metal surface expose Then again by forming I the post into a pearl back, or post member, could not be readily accomplished.
The device is extremely simple and practical in its construction and effective in its operation and by its use a strong high grade button of this character may be produced at the minimum expense.
In some instances instead of attaching the button post to a base-member of the character illustrated in Figure I, the inner end of the post 19 may be formed With an outwardly flaring flange 20, as illustrated in Figure a, over the edge of which flange may be rolled a base-plate 21.
Theforegoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege oiresorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limit ed only by the terms of the appended claim.
I claim:
A button comprising a button backhaving a comparatively straight hole therethrough, a tubular neck member of substantial uniform diameter having a hollow head formed integral With one end, a hollow shoulder formed integral adjacent the opposite end of said neck portion, and a continuous tubular integral shank portion on the 5 DAMON A.
