BUCKLE Filed Jan. 5, 1932 Patented Aug. 23, 1932 rapiijrj UNITED STATES WILLIAM DANA SEIIBERT, or BRooKLim, new YoRK v I BUCKLE Application filed. January 5, "1932. "S e rial in. 584,833.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel and useful buckle of simple and efficient construction intended primarily for use for fastening the straps on binders, but
{ adapted for other uses to which a buckle may be put. I attain these and other objects of my invention by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the buckle .10 in position to fasten a strap aroundga package;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1
of the drawing showing the buckle in unlocked position;
Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the buckle as it is being moved toward the locked position shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the buckle detached from the strap which it fastens;
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing a modification having the arched link 7 and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of the buckle having the link 7 2 toothed.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in each of the views.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated a packaged article A encircled by a strap S, one end of which strap is provided with a stitched or other suitable loop S1, the free end of the strap being designated as S2.
The buckle consists of a cross barl having side bar members formed at right angles to the cross bar and diagonally (or inwardly) bent portions 3 which meet at 6 andare suitably bent to form the loop 4 which functions as a finger hold, the ends of theloop being preferably joined at 5.
I provide a link? and slidably mounted on the end portions 2 to permit a limited movement of the link 7. In use the looped end of the strap S1 is stitched around the cross bar 1, the strap is extended around the article to befastened and the'free endS2 is inserted between the cross bar 1 and link 7 as shown in Fig. 2 and the buckle is then swung by means of loop or finger nold 4 in the direction indicated'in n Fig. 3 to a position substantially like that shown in Fig. 1. The link 7 serves to frichaving eyes 8' loosely tionally'engage and thus lock the strap in thebuckle; i 1
In the modified form s of the buckleshown' in Fig.5, the link? is'arched'or curvedso that its ends will-more snugly engage the u strap while thecentral portion is substan-' tially free from the strap.
' In Fig. 6 there is illustrated a further modified form of the invention in which there is provided a cross link 7 which is. toothed or roughened to more eifectively engage the strap, this form of the invention being necessary-only where a very considerable tension is applied to the strap.
The operation of the device has been de- 5; scribed in Figs. 2and 3 ofithe drawing.
It is within the contemplation of my invention to make the buckle either of round wire or of flat strips of metal; and to modify the shape of the loop member as desired.
What I claim is 1 1. In a buckle, the combination of a cross bar, having sides bent at right angles thereto, diagonally bent portions terminating in a looped element so formed and positioned .7 as to 'be used for operating the buckle, and a link having its ends formed into eyes loosely engaging the aforesaid sides of the buckle to permit of insertion of a'belt or strap between the link and the cross bar and mo adapted to frictionally but releasably engage the belt or strap to fasten same in an engaged position or to release same by a swinging movement of the buckle.
v 2. In a buckle, the combination of a wire cross bar, having sides bent atright angles thereto, diagonally bent portions terminating in. a looped element so formed and positioned as to be used foroperating the buckle, and a wire link having its ends formed into eyes loosely engaging the aforesaid sides of the buckle to permit of insertion of a belt or strap between the link and the cross bar, said link being arched to cause itsends to tightly engage the belt or strap.
3. In a buckle, the combination of a wire cross bar, having sides bent at rightangles thereto, diagonally bentportions terminat-- ing in a loopedelement so formed and posi 'vtion'ed asto be used-for operating the buckle,
and alink having its ends formed into eyes loosely engaging the aforesaid sides of the buckle to permit of insertion of a belt or strap between the link and the cross bar, said link being roughened to frictiona-lly engage the strap or belt to hold same against a considerable tensign,
r 4. In a bmkglegthelcornbination of a was s bar, having sides bent at right angles thereto, said sides then being inwardly bent, said inwardly bent porlionsbeing formed "a finger hold element, and a single link having eyes at itsends loosely mounted on the sides, said link being slightly ofis'et from the plane ofthe buckle frame, whereby a strap. or belt may ibefrictienalily engaged by thesa-iell-ink V V and the aforesaid cross bar by mammlly 0p- 'enatin-gvtheznai-n pentien of thebuckle with aswingingmovemenfl g g V 7
