READING SUPPORT Filed Aug. 12, 1929 INVENTOR- K 7% D FAX 15 Mae-W,

' UNITED- STA KARL J JRAXLER, F LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA Patented Aug. 23, 1932 TE'S READING SUPPORT Application filed August 12, 1929. .Serial No. 385,258
This invention relatest'o devices used for holding reading matter ina desirable positionbefore the eyes of a reader.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a support in form of a foldable cover by whichsuch reading matter as for instance a stenographers note-book can be held in a suitably upright position to be easily readable by a stenographer sitting before a type- Writer.
Another object is to provide such a support with an interconnecting folding link to which the bound edge of a note-book can be held in such a manner that the page on which reading matter is to be observed appears ina suitably evenly flat conditionto insure equally well against any light-reflection over thewhole page.
Another object is to provide such a support or holder with friction means along the interconnecting edges of the oppositely disposed covers that the folclable covers can be placed at any desired angle on the table top to make supported reading matter distinctly readable without undue strain on the eyes due to light reflections.
Another object is to provide adjusting means for the frictional interconnection between the covers.
Another object is to provide a follower on the support by which certain lines or matter of the supported matter can be checked.
Another object is to provide attachments by which any desired matter can be held on the support.
Other objects will appear from the following description and appended claims as well as from the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a support unfolded having various attachments to jointly or separately operate according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the support folded backward with a book indicated or outlined on one of the attachments of the support.
Fig. Sis a perspective view of the support illustratlng the use of another attachment for holding small notes or cards on the support. o l i Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the support illustrating the flexibility of the back of the covers where by an inserted note-book can be held so that the whole page is evenly flat on the support.
Fig. 5 is a detail edge View of the answer adapted to roll along the edges of the support and .to cross over' inserted reading matter. K Fig. 6 is a cross section on line 6-6 ofFig. 1 illustratingthe clamping feature of the in terconnecting link betweenthe covers. 1i
Fig. 7 is a cross section on line .7 7 of Fig. 1 through the larger cross bars in-the oppositely disposed frame. structures of the covers. r
As illustrated, the support consists principally of the'two back covers Sand 9 inter connected by the link-back 10.
Each of'the covers is made of a frame structure consisting of the thinnerbars 11, 7
The engagement of the rolled-in edge of the link-back'lO around the end bar 12 'is in form of a friction joint, the bar 12being turnable' within the rolled-in edge of the back, however, with a desired frictionalgrip,
by which the joints between the back 10 and the two covers 8 and'9 are made useful.
This frictional grip between the back and the covers is one of theprincipal features of this invention and the end bar 12 is for this reason made particularly thick to assure a desired amount of friction in thesejoints.
Making the bar 12 especially thick, and
rolling the edges of the back suitably tight to insure the desired friction normally provides suflicient friction surface to insurea satisfactory grip between the back and the cover. However, in cases where particularlysecure gripping is desired, clampingmeans are added in the joint structure, in Figs. 1
and 6 small clamping bolts 14 being indicated with washers 15 so disposed that the adjacent edges 16 can be pressed towards the flat'portion 17 of the back 10.
- 5 To make the. whole device convenient as.
well as attractive, apencil container 18 is added inthe structure of one of the'covers as well as-a mirror 20 and} container 19 for articles such as a powder puff, to elimi- 10 nate other articles from the desk of astenog one Ofathe covers serves to hold small cards and notes in the mannerillustrated in vFig. 3.
To assist a reader infollowing reading natter fromlineto line, a follower or guide is provided as illustrated in Figs. 1, 4 and 5. R'ollers are mounted in suitable frames 26, which are, connected by across bar27 to reach acrossthe whole width ofthe device, the rollerstozrunalong the opposite upright edges ofthecover'so-as to guide the cross bar 27 in a horizontal position up and down oQver -the cover. a
i For holding a stenographers note-book on thecoverin the manner illustrated in Fig. 4:, a Spring 28- isdrawn from side toside over the back 10 of the device, and, by the flexibility and adjustability ofthe covers with respect to *theback .10," the coverscan be adjusted so thatthe -backis practically in alignment withthe front .cover sothat thesupported note bookappearsevenly flat from its bound back down to the edge of-theopened vnotebook portion from which a reading, is desired.
